Being and becoming handicap limits people to certain things that others have advantages over!  There are struggling aspects for the handicap that others seem to overlook and ignore!  I have to admit that I found this out the hard way but also found that there are very few that did show compassion and care while others would be annoyed and bothered!

Although there has been better means for the handicap today, there are still obstacles, struggles, and limitations that the handicap must endure!  For example:  I broke my foot and became handicapped, limiting me to certain things from what I have become a custom to with my everyday way of life!  Riding my motorcycle, better performance with my business for my customers, cooking, cleaning, providing better for my family, getting around, going up and down stairs, and SHOPPING!

Having to shop at the grocery store was in fact a challenge!  I have never had the need to use one of those motorized shopping carts to do my shopping (which started out to be fun riding by the way), but I had too!  I shop at Wal-Mart for the savings and low prices, but I am use to filling up my cart to the max to lessen the trips because I really hate to shop but it has to be done!  Those motorized shopping carts are limited to what you can fit, no problem, I would just cut back to the most important needs.  I also figured out that I should bring someone with me to push the bigger cart if need be, sometimes that could be a problem.

Anyway, as I was driving around gathering what I really needed, I found myself in awkward situations!  I couldn’t reach some of the products, no one around to help; I had to painfully try my best to get it off the shelf.  I even struggled getting down some of the isles that were crowded with other shoppers who became annoyed with ME as I would have to sit there until I had room to get through or around!  There were people who would even hit you with their carts getting around you without saying sorry!  Out of the whole store there were TWO people that actually helped me with a few difficulties.  Everyone else showed annoyed disrespect like I was a nuisance to them!  I got first hand of what it can be being handicapped and the way others will in fact treat you!

One thing that was brought to my attention by the son of another elderly man also in a motorized cart was as I was passing by them he stopped me and asked if my horn worked on my diving cart, (I didn’t even know I had one), he pointed it out to me and tried it, sure enough it didn’t work, nor did it work on his father’s cart!  My first thought was why, then I figured well maybe it was disconnected because it would be annoying for others who shop or complaints made by those others who didn’t like that horn being blown at them as they blocked the right-a-way for some stupid reason, (talking on the phone, chatting it up with someone else they ran into, leaving their cart in the middle of the isle and walk away), who really knows but it did place question within my mind over that one!

I must say though that it was the most difficult time I have ever had shopping!  It has also been a complete struggle keeping up with my own business and my regular household duties as well!  I have never felt so helpless, never felt so much of being such an annoying nuisance, never felt so limited, never felt so much worthlessness until now.

What I can do and say is this; the next time you ever run across someone who is handicapped and limited, trying to do things by themselves, try and show compassion and respect for the handicap, don’t treat them like an annoying nuisance!  Show some humanity and give support to those who need it!  Treat the handicap & others as you would expect and want to be treated yourself!  Show more support to the handicap!

Mater- Your right about showing Handicapped people with respect, I have had 19 back operations and Deal with Bad Back pain 99% of the time, also have a Bad left hip and that really limits my speed. My wife is in a wheel chair most of the time due to her Medical problems..The looks you get and the people who just don't care to move when you come thru with the wheelchair ticks me off. 2 weeks ago a woman looked at my wife and stepped in front of her and then turned it to her wheelchair, she hit the ground and looked around. She said she was sorry and walked off, but to look at someone in a wheelchair and then to walk into them, like you are to move out of there way..

PEOPLE TRUST ME, NO ONE WANTS TO BE HANDICAPPED
AND BE UNABLE TO DO THE THINGS WE ONCE DID or TO LIVE WITH THE PAIN ALOT OF US HAVE

People are just plain RUDE.. I see it all the time in the grocery stores. It is very hard to watch someone trying to reach for something and not be able to get it. People just go about their business and never lend a helping hand. It makes you fell good to help, so why not.

I confess, Mater, that I'm one of those people that sometimes gets irritated by the people using those motorized carts. I'm afraid that there may be some sort of stigma attached to them for many people. I guess for me, it's the negative experiences I've had with people using them while working as a stocker... getting hit, dodging them, having to pick up chairs and displays that they've knocked over and continued on their merry way. Some of them have just been downright rude and cranky. Of course, its entirely possible that thier cranky because they have to use such a horrible device to begin with. I rarely ever see a cart that actually works well.

This being said, there's still no excuse for not assisting someone in a cart if they need help. If they can't reach something, I get it for them. And while I may get irritated, I don't take it out on them either. I also have to remember that those carts don't exactly handle that smoothly. Lots of people can't steer those things too well.

"J"...I understand your point and yes those carts can be irritating but so can a wheel chair. I found out quickly that it's a road course and you have to drive with constint coution always looking in front of you...but someone can wam you on your blind side when not looking. It was kind of hard to do with the cart in front of you and you have to get up far enough at the end of the isle to see if anyone is coming, but the difference is that a push cart doesn't get hurt like the person can on the motor cart. But even on those motor carts there are always bad apples in the barrel.

You FOLKS DO KNOW this DON'T YOU? If you're disabled or have become temporarily disabled and you need help getting your groceries, that the majority of the stores will actually have someone from the store go with you to help you.

You folks DID NOT KNOW you can REQUEST and ASK for this? Usually most folks have someone with them so they don't need the extra hands, but if you have to go it alone, ASK FOR HELP from the Door Greeter (at Wal-Mart), they may send you to the service desk to ask for help (which in itself is a real pain in the derrier as well) or they may be able to help you find someone that can get you a person to help you get your shopping done. I do KNOW WAL-MART (as much as a lot of people hate them), PUBLIX, ALBERTSON's and WINN DIXIE ALL DO this, but YOU HAVE TO ASK FOR IT.

Hopefully this will help those that become disabled or temporarily disabled when they go out to do their shopping next time. And those HORNS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE FUNCTIONAL for SAFETY REASONS, if they aren't working (TEST THEM BEFORE YOU TAKE the motorized cart!) this needs to be reported so it can be fixed. Those horns SHOULD WORK!

Maybe they do, maybe they don't...if they do they should let people know it is an option availible for you, but they don't. Nothing was ever mentioned during the time they instruct you on how to use those motor carts! Maybe more people would know about it if it was told to them otherwise...like me, no one will know unless it is offered or said or advertized.

411...so far I haven't found a cart with a working horn yet. When you enter you may find only one or two of those carts availible for use or you may find yourself waiting until one is returned for your use so testing the carts first isn't always an option you would wish unless you have the time to sit around and wait for the right one to come along. From what I have also gathered is problems with the carts are reported but nothing done about it. One cart that I did get because there was no choices, the wheels wobbled rocking the cart as it rolled. The lady that returned it told me that she reported it weeks ago but it was never fixed.

Thanks for the 411 though...I haven't been to Publix, Albertson's, or Winn Dixie yet but I think I'll check this out further.

I always assist the handicap. I had a lady in a wheelchair behind me in line at the grocery store last year around New Years (I remember this time because I was buying my black eyed peas for New Years Day). She watched me put my black eyed peas on the counter and asked me where I found those. She said "I looked where they are supposed to be and they are all gone" I told her that they moved them all to the outer aisle on display. So I asked her how many cans would she like and she told me two. So I went over there and got them for her. Just that little gesture made her very happy. It doesn't take alot people to help someone and you will be surprised how it gives you a good feeling to know you did. Be nice to the handicap because karma might get you when your that way!!!!!

There are signs, but they are (unfortunately and they may do it on purpose - I can't say) usually quite small, but they are usually posted throughout the store. Next time look around and see if you can find them.

Its sad but many of these stores don't advertise this help (most I have been in do have it) because if they did then they would have to hire on a full staff just to follow around the "HEFERS" that just DON'T want to walk if they can ride, and we all know there are lots of them in every store. I personally go out of my way to help the elderly or the truly disabled if I see they need help, but when it comes to 300lb Bertha who can't reach the Oreo's on the top shelf...or 500lb Barney who will JUMP OUT OF THAT CART and mow you down for the last six pack of Diet Coke, just to return his big booty to his cart and cruise away...well sorry folks...pick up your jumbo butts and do a few laps around the store cause your on your own. Oh and don't even think about saying anything to me about not helping you, cause if you do honey...I WILL unload both barrels and in a low clear voice explain your problem...BEING FAT IS NOT A HANDICAP ITS A LIFESTYLE CHOICE SO DEAL WITH IT and have a Disney day!

I have been handicapped for the last 15 years so I know what it's like to have people almost knock you down because you move a little slower than they do. Trust me folks, nobody sets out with the intention of becoming handicapped. It just happens and you have to deal with it and people need to be a little bit more understanding. We don't mean to get in your way. We just can't help it. My beef is when I see people park in handicapped parking spaces when it's obvious they're using granny's placard illegally and they get indignant when you point it out to them. They are taking that spot away from someone who really needs it.

and when i go shopping at anystore i have to end up waiting for about an hour to even get a motrirized cart ,, some store only have 1 cart,
to me there is more then 1 handicapp in the town i live in,,,, makes me mad i was at wal-mart the greeters at the wal-mart where i live ,, let young kids with no health prombelm at all, and let them run threw the store on the cart ,, where a handicapp person or and elderly person, caan use ... i have seen so many elderly people grab a big shopping cart and try to walk behind it ,,, i can't walk on my knees to far, before they sweelup and make it hard for me to even bend them,
the store managers need to open up there eyes and watch the people useing the handicapp carts ,, and at time only half of the work,,, or the batteries are shot on them,, will not hold a charge ,,, need to make sure there charge when the store is slow like late at night at the 24 hours wal-mart,
I agree with eveything you said in your blog ,,,

Yes, I agree with the MORONS who take away HANDICAP SPACES that ARE NOT HANDICAPPED! If I see a police officer in the parking lot or the store has an "off duty" officer working, I take the tag # and inform them I believe this person is utilizing someone elses placard! Especially if I see them HOT FOOT it into the store like they have aboslutely nothing wrong with them! I'm sure a lot of folks are really p.o.'ed when they find that $250 parking citation on their vehicle (mostly ones that park in the Handicapped spaces WITHOUT a placard or tag.) Oooo, I'm just soooo mean!

I try to help those with disabilities when I can, hold open the door, etc. But would you believe I have also been INSULTED IMMENSELY by also doing that as well! I've been cursed at and told "I CAN DO IT MYSELF! I DON'T NEED YOUR (lots of expletives here) CHARITY or HELP!

This is why some people WON'T HELP because they have been subjected to such crap from some of these folks. Like the old saying goes it only takes ONE BAD APPLE to SPOIL the BUNCH!
