About That Trooper

Source: Investor's Business Daily

By INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY

Politics: You'll be hearing a lot in coming weeks about Sarah Palin's "abuse of power" in trying to get a state cop fired. Here's the back story you won't be hearing.

Palin's political enemies have a stink bomb set to go off late in October, just before the election. That's when voters will see fruits of a legislative investigation into the charge that the governor fired Alaska's Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan because he wouldn't get rid of Mike Wooten, a state trooper and Palin's ex-brother-in-law.

We can see where this is headed. Palin will be found to have done nothing illegal in firing Monegan, since public safety commissioners serve at the governor's pleasure. But the media will frame this case in vague but sinister terms: Think "abuse of power." It will also bury the back story that explains why Palin was so concerned.

So here are some key facts to keep on file (for a full report on Wooten, see adn.com/front/story/476430.html). You may not be seeing much of them from here on:

• Mike Wooten, 35, has been a trooper since 2001. He has been married and divorced four times. One of his marriages was to Palin's sister, Molly McCann, with whom he had two children. That marriage ended in 2006. His behavior leading up to the divorce led Palin's and McCann's father, Chuck Heath, to file a formal complaint about him to the state police.

• Heath and Sarah Palin, who was not yet governor, said that Wooten had threatened to kill Heath — telling McCann that Heath "would eat a BLEEP lead bullet" if he hired a lawyer for her. They also charged that he had used a Taser on his own 11-year-old stepson, had drunk beer in his patrol car and had shot a cow moose without a license (the latter a crime in Alaska, where such licenses are not easy to come by).

The state police investigated these charges and substantiated all of them. Col. Julia Grimes, then head of the Alaska State Troopers, suspended Wooten for 10 days and wrote, "The record clearly indicates a serious and concentrated pattern of unacceptable and at times, illegal activity occurring over a lengthy period, which establishes a course of conduct totally at odds with the ethics of our profession." She warned him he would be fired if he didn't shape up. The troopers' union got the suspension cut to five days.

Now ask yourself this: If you were Sarah Palin and had such a revealing look at Mike Wooten, would you have wanted him on the force? Palin was acting as any concerned citizen should after a close encounter with an unfit cop. If there's abuse of power in this story, it lies on the side of bureaucrats and unions protecting officers whose behavior makes them a danger to the public.

But you don't understand , this mans obvious guilt and or Sarah Palins total innocence is not “news worthy” ...only the part that looks bad is worth putting on air ! Just the same as Palims husband having a DUI was story story but Obama using pot and cocaine was/is NOT a story ....you know you are not supposed to be looking any of this stuff up , just sit back and listen to what the nice TV people say and NOTHING els!

I'll post here so you don't feel like the dumb ones are neglecting you :) ..

that trooper sounds like a nice guy. LOL

As for this other guy just a couple snippets Ive read..

"This is not the first time Monegan has lost his job. In 2006, Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich asked him to leave his post as Anchorage police chief early"

"The governor offered Monegan a different job, as executive director of the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. He turned it down."

I'll see if I can find the link again, but they were off the Anchorage news paper in a July issue.. To me it say the Gov. wanted to restructure and he quit, he was also incompetent at leading a police force. And you know the guy was probably questionable when the UNION liked him lol.. That was also on there.

You know – 10 days suspension, dropped to five seems appropriate. After all, all he really did (and admits to) is tasering his 10 year-old stepson, illegally shooting a cow moose and drinking beer in his patrol car. What’s the big deal after all???

Oh did you know that in Orange County, Florida it takes severely heinous crimes and gross misconduct to warrant something as strong as termination for a Deputy Sherriff – something like failing to be completely honest about a relationship with a woman who has seemed to have lost her daughter. You know; the one who didn’t report the girl missing until a month had passed.

One more thing – it seems our local ABC affiliate (in conjunction with CNN) is reporting the Troopers side of the story now.

When the time comes, I am sure Governor Palin will have a credible explanation.

It's ALSO been reported that he was repeatedly reprimanded and disaplined as a trooper..AND that he threatened,, with a Gun..the father..

Sarah Palin should have ran in the other direction, because any action taken from the power of her office is an abuse of power. It doesn't matter what she knew about the trooper; she can't influence justice in behalf of her family from the office she holds. Period...

Well, if he didn't threaten to shoot the Governor's father, he is ok then.

Nothing wrong with all that other stuff, right?

Sounds like a fine upstanding officer that should be allowed to keep his job.

Maybe something can be done about some of the police who are abusing power here in Florida?
An example would be the woman who was pushed down stairs by an "officer". What did he end up getting out of that?

FOX posted the story at:

Sorry, but I don't see a way to place an active link, so best I can do is leave the url so it can be pieced together. :(
