LLRucker's Blog

During my wandering down the information super highway yesterday, I came across the entire 'sermon' by Jeremiah Wright that has created a firestorm of controversy around Barack Obama and scored a damaging( but not fatal) hit to his campaign.

What I read was not only shocking, but infuriating and once again places the media in a bad light.

While Fox News was quick to bring us the 'news' of Jeremiah Wrights' apparent racist remarks, what they failed to do, and I can only assume it was by design, (whose though is another question) was to report the ENTIRE sermon, portions of which came directly from the Bible.

The quotes that caused the most ire with the voting public : "God Bless America, no God DAMN America" and "America's Chicken's have come home to roost" were not even Jeremiah Wright's but those of US Ambassador Edward Peck, a white man who served as US Ambassador to Iraq under Jimmy Carter. Peck spent 32 years in the US Foreign Service.

Another part of the sermon that was not reported: "I heard Ambassador Peck on an interview yesterday," Wright declared. "He was on Fox News. This is a white man and he was upsetting the Fox News commentators to no end. He pointed out, a white man, an ambassador, that what Malcolm X said when he got silenced by Elijah Muhammad was in fact true: America's chickens are coming home to roost."

Wright went on to list other American endeavors that he found particularly unsettling, namely the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

On further investigation, I discovered that many PROMINENT Americans: Dwight Eisenhower, Herbert Hoover, and Albert Einstien to name a few, were horrified by the idea that American's would result to such drastic measures to end a war that by all reports was already won.

The surrender of Japan was all but a fait accompli when the decision to drop the bombs was made.

Wright's commented that the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki  "killed far more people than the few thousand that died on 9-11, and we never batted an eye", and in that he was correct.

Wright went on to say: " Violence begets violence; hatred begets hatred, and terrorism begets terrorism." And he ended his 'faith footnote" by attributing his comments to the man who made them, Edward Peck, "A white ambassador said that yall, not a black militant, not a reverend who preaches about racism, an ambassador whose eyes are wide open and is trying to get us to wake up and move away from this dangerous precipice... the ambassador said that the people we have wounded don't have the military capability we have, but they do have individuals who are willing to die and take thousands with them... let me stop my faith footnote right there."

Now taken out of context as these quotes most certainly were by Fox News, it is easy to see how Jeremiah Wright's words have inspired such passion and aroused such anger in the American public. But, when you take the time to read the entire sermon, then the 'clear' cut picture of Wright as a racist and anti-American becomes a bit cloudy.

Fox News knew the entire truth, they had the whole sermon and yet they chose to present only the most damaging portions and failed to attribute those quotes to the man who actually made them, a white man no less.

As to the other comment about the US of KKKA, still digging around on that one. But given the sin of omission committed by Fox News, nothing would surprise me there.

This biased reporting against Obama had one Fox News anchor man get up and walk off the set. Brian Kilmeade walked off the set after a dispute with co-hosts Gretchen Carlson and  Steve Doocy. and "Fox News Sunday" host CHris Wallace railed against "Fox and Friends" for what he termed "Obama Bashing." This was reported on the Huffington Post.

One has to wonder who's pocket Fox has snuggled down in. If you're going to report the news, report it accurately, and without bias. Let the American public make their own decisions about controversial reports, don't make it for us.

We want factual reporting, not sensational journalism. We don't care about your ratings and we certainly don't care about your personal political preferences. You are supposed to be un-biased, but Fox has proven themselves to be anything but.

Does Fox owe Wright and Obama an apology? I don't know and it's not my decision to make, but I do think they owe the rest of America one. Stop lying, and start doing your job, which is to report the news accurately and truthfully, with the emphasis on 'fully'.

Thank you Rucker.
I never liked Fox news until the blog came along. Finally, I could ask questions, add information that was left out, just like you are right now, and basically get more than the usual half-assed reporting I came to expect from TV journalists.

All hail the blog!

Amen, Northton! As Americans we need to hold our news journalists to higher standards. By omitting the entire 'sermon' of Jeremiah Wright, they created a firestorm of controversy and placed Obama in an awkward position.
But, I guess that old adage, all's fair in love and war still holds true. But, we no longer have to wonder whose side Fox is on.

Your right LL we need to hold ALL journalist to a higher standard. So what do you have to say about MSN,CNN,CBS,NBC,MSNBC, and the rest of those left wing nut job stations. Of all of the news stations even Hillary Clinton said Fox was the least BIAS. And this is long before Rev. Wright was found out to be an anti-American racist bigot. Since your wondering around the info super highway google ( New Black Panthers) It's all based on Black theoligy and that is what Wright preaches about.

I really like this (we bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki.) well heres a another date you should google Dec.7 1941. I believe this took place before we dropped any bombs. I have no idea what history books your reading but Japan had absolutely no intention on surrender until we leveled them.

The Spirit of the message is still there. Just because he's paraphrasing a "white man" doesn't make it any less vile. I still believe after listening to him he has a deep resentment towards America although I don't think he's a racist.

As for Fox News, they are doing their job and I don't remember seeing, CBS, NBC, ABC or CNN put any of that information up either till it became in their best interest.

This really comes down to Obama, whom I too feel resents America. You don't surround your self with people you don't empathize with. So all in all I think the spirit of the message is what was truly at stake there. You can't quote someone and think that by doing that to make your point you absolve yourself of any guilt.

Boogy, I had an Uncle in the Navy at Pearl. I'm pretty familiar with that date.
I'm not making the case for or against Obama or Wright, merely pointing out the bias of the media and perhaps you're right. To single out Fox news when ALL of them are biased was irresponsible of me.Kind a lumps me in with them, don't it? LOL! Anyway, I chose Fox News because it was they who broke the 'story" and they who omitted the entire sermon, and it was their anchors who walked out.

Sage, honestly, with things te way they are now; the housing market crashing down, the jobless rate increasing, oil prices skyrocketing, I venture to say there are a LOT of Americans harboring deep resentment of America and our government. I don't think that makes us un-American, exactly the opposite really. Only in America are we free to rail against our country and our governemt in open forums like this one.

Actually, I was reading an Op-Ed on the Boston Globe that was quoting Eisenhower about the bombing plans. According to Ike, Japan was beaten and ready to surrender. The only hold out was that Japan wanted to retain their Emperor after the surrender.
AS far as Pearl Harbor goes, that was a military strike against a military target, am I correct?
I guess when all is said and done, a higher power will judge us for our actions, right or wrong, but there is nothing we can do to change or alter the past.

Booggey, The Japanese were negotiating surrender. There were a few items to clear up.
Truman, being President, would have that info.

The US knew the attack was coming on Pearl Harbor. They did nothing to warn the commander that an attack was on the way.

OK - first, for the wives' tale of the US knowing that the attack on Pearl was imminant: I am no fan of FDR but no, he did NOT set up the US Navy and all of those sailors to die to get into a war that we were going to get in on anyway. Keep in mind that we were making money hand-over-fist on WWII before we got into it and had NO incentive to get in before we'd maximized our profits, until the attack gave us one. As well, the attack moved us from battleship and destroy Navy to aircraft Navy and submarine Navy, which was the key to our success in the Pacific. The Japanese had NO incentive to force that change.

Second, we bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki because the Japanese refused to surrender unconditionally. Historians since have complained that there would have been no consequences to our accepting the Japanese defeat and leaving their government intact. I think the Gulf War taught us the fallacy of that argument.

As for Fox News owing ANYONE an appology, especially based on some none-argument that some portion of what Wright said may have been expressed differently by someone else, my argument to that is, please, put in context for me Wright's claims that we performed medical experiments on the Tuskegee Airmen, that HIV AIDS was created by the government to kill black people, and how this ties to a Christian sermon.

Because, honestly, I can't see you doing it.

LL,
I am no history expert, but I had always thought that the decision to nuke Japan even though we were winning the war was based, at least partially, on the fact that we would have lost tens of thousands more of American soldiers had we continued with the conventional fight as would have Japan. Using the bombs just put all of the losses on their side.

Being as we did not start the fight, I really don't have much of a problem with that. Luckily for Iraq, Iran, and a few other neighborhoods in the great sandbox I am not in charge. I believe that I would look our current situation in the same way.

AS for the Wright speech, I think you post is a good one, but I have to agree with the others that just because he was quoting the words of someone else does not make his message okay. I do think, however, that if FOX was aware of this information that the should have made it available if for no other reason to show that they are trying to be fair and open. Provide US with ALL of the info and let us make a decision for ourselves.

The first thing Patton did after the war was to put the NAZI government officials in charge to minimize problems. The Japanese government was left mostly intact after the war.
One of the things Japan insisted on for a surrender was to keep the emperor. They kept him.
That proves that we made a big mistake in Iraq dismanteling the government and miitary.

Earlier in 1941, Roosevelt sent the Fying Tigers, a covert organization, to China. Their mission was to attack Japan as private citizens. They were released from duty in the AAC and paid by OSS.

Your facts are off! Chickens comming home to roust was a phrase coined by Malcom X!

FOX NEWS was not the ones to break this story either. This Church has been reported on for years! Its just that the typical mainstream media never wanted to tell the story and only once enough folks watched the new media and talk radio did it get more attention!

The Church sold this collection of gems on DVD to the public! While you libs were busy trying to smear Karl Rove, and dig up dirt on Bush this stuff was out there!

Besides, you have not heard the sermons from another black church in Harlem that dogs out Obama all day long! Nor the connection and association of Obama with domestic terrorist! That too is comming, its been out there and I stand and applaude FOX NEWS for tell the stories that nobody else wants to!!

All the liberals that demand the truth sure are selective in what they want to hear!

LL you seem to have an issue with the bombing of Japan. You continue to reference it everywhere you can. Those bombs brought an end to a war sooner than any other operation of carpet bombing for years would have.

I myself upon my retirement actually went to Hiroshima on my way to Osaka and Kyoto. The city to walk through gives you chills still today, but those two bombs ended what would have been a much longer and more deadly war....

LL, tt seems that when Don Imus made statements no one wanted to hear about all the good he has done. When a white man says something the blacks don't like it doesn't mater if he apolodizes or whatever. LL you think we whites are so bad, why don't you let me help you get to a black country where you can have all the freedom you are missing. Believe me, I can and will help you get there. Or why not just sit down with some families that lost loved ones at Pearl Harbor and tell them the Japanese bombing was out of "context" and when we dropped the bombs on Japan it was wrong and we should apologize. I'm sure all American veterans of war think thank God you are a minority in your way of thinking. Just think....We didn't drop those bombs on Germany because we took Hitler out of "context". I love the US of A and I am proud of all our veterans of war have done.

Enola Gay delivered a very important message.

It was ignored, so the message was delivered again.

The Emperor of Japan surrendered unconditionally, even though his army wanted to fight to the death of every man, woman, and child in Japan.

The Emperor of Japan made a very wise decision.

Besides..The people of BOTH cities were CONSTANTLY being warned to LEAVE the city DAYS before the bombings...It demonstrates the stubborness of the Japanese Bushido Mentality that THEY refused even to Evacuate a CITY in the face of TOTAL annialation..Let alone to surrender the Divine Sovereignty of their Homeland to what THEY considered the Barbarians from the west...

The population was ORDERED to hold out to the last Man, Woman and Child..

I spent Years living in Japan,,have come to admire it's History, Culture and Customs so I KNOW a little bit about this subject..

Wow, you're just determined to put Rev. Wright in a good light, aren't you? As it was said earlier, just because part of his sermons were originally (maybe) quoted by a white man, doesn't make it any less vile. Apparently, he agreed enough with the statments to spew it out again.

To hear you (and others, not just picking on you) tell it, you would think that the U.S. and Japan only engaged in 3 battles during WWII... Pearl Harbor, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Yes, then it would seem like "overkill".

The Japanese were the most fierce, vicious and determined opponents we had ever faced. To the Japanese, dying in combat was the highest form of honor (kind of reminds you of another enemy we currently face, doesn't it?). To surrender to your enemy was the ultimate shame. To them, those who surrendered were less than human. This is why our soldiers who surrendered to them were treated like dirt.

Ask any of the residents of China, Korea, Thailand, Burma, Indonesia (my grandparents could've told you some horror stories about life under Imperial Japanese rule), Phillipines, etc. if they feel bad that Japan was bombed.

As Hawkeye said (and he's absolutely right about the Bushido mentality), the Japanese were warned that we had these bombs, but they refused to surrender. The first bomb dropped, they still refused to surrender. The second bomb dropped, the military STILL refused to surrender. It was only through the direct intervention of Emporer Hirohito, who was literally believed to be a direct descendent of the Sun God, who finally convinced the military to surrender.
