With a throbbing knee, Tiger Woods made one last improbable escape Monday and won the U.S. Open in a 19-hole playoff over Rocco Mediate.

This was his 14th career major and maybe the most amazing of them all.

One shot behind, Woods birdied the 18th hole to force sudden death at Torrey Pines.

But that one extra hole was enough to doom Mediate, trying to become the oldest U.S. Open champion at 45 years.

He put his tee shot in the bunker at No. 7, knocked his approach off a cart path and against the bleachers, chipped some 18 feet past the hole and missed the par putt.

On the verge of one of golf's greatest upsets, Mediate instead became another victim.

I felt so sorry for Rocco!  I sat up all afternoon watching this faceoff - rooting for the underdog.  Yes, I know Tiger is great. He is a freak of nature.  He also whines and cusses and throws his clubs ... A LOT.  Not exactly what I want young kids to emulate.  Did you see NBC apologize for a close up camera shot of Tiger cussing?

Did you watch this great golf spectacle? Who were you rooting for?  Did you see the audience that showed up for this event? Massive!!! Do you think Tiger deserved to win ... he didn't look so hot yesterday.  Rocco had a few really bad shots, but seemed consistent.  If he have ONLY putted better!!! That was frustrating ... he needed a better short game.  What do you think?

I was rooting for Rocco, though I have never heard of him. He was just so good and then he had the " near-misses " that can make or break. In the end, he broke, but not by much. Tiger now knows the heat is on!

I dunno guys....I may be in the minority so far on this blog, but I was glad Tiger won. It's always amazing seeing the best do his best.

We were all treated to one of the greatest playoffs in history. 19 holes with two great athletes going head to head. Tiger vs. Rocco was a truly something to behold. One guy is already an icon of the game and the other is just a guy with a huge heart and a never say die attitude. Rocco was never out it and in fact should have won it on a couple of shots. Either way, the guys showed the world what he is made of. And if you ask me, Rocco is a way cooler name than Tiger.

I like Tiger, and I'm glad he won.

As for the cussing...which grownup (esp one with kids) has never lost it and swore? Come on! I'd rather my kids see me vent and see how dumb it makes me look than hold it in and explode one day.

Get real!!

These little shows that these clowns put on are real good for our children to emulate. As in the past they had rules of conduct that every player was held to. Nowdays you can have a gun fight at a night club, get arrested for drunk driving on your way home. Bail out, go home and beat your wife for your bad luck, then go play ball on national tv come saturday. Isn't America a wonderful place for the influence we allow our children to idealize!

I think the best comment here is Emily's! She got it right on. Couldn't have said it better myself.

Sup Girl!!

Good to see you back in town! =)

This match was THE BEST MATCH I'VE SEEN EVER!!!!!

I managed to get to see the last playoff on ESPN Classic and TOTALLY LOVE IT!!!!!

Rocco had it there to win. But that's why Tiger is Tiger. He doesn't fold in the clutch too often!!!

And now that we know what we know about his body, it's even more miraculous!!!

Again, WELCOME BACK!!
