Siplin and Ortiz Square Off
Sep 29, 2008 | 6:29 PM PST
Category:

State Senator Gary Siplin and his challenger Belinda Ortiz are going head to head tonight in a candidates' forum. It is sponsored by the Puerto Rican Association. Both candidates will present their platforms and answer voters' questions.
This race is turning nasty in tv ads and fliers. What do you think about the contest for State Senate 19? Blog your thoughts here.
This Thursday, the two candidates for Vice President will hold their only debate. A long time Washington insider will debate with a new comer and self proclaimed reformer. What do you think about the Palin/Biden debate? Will it be even? Does Palin have to win or can she just hold her own and declare victory? Blog it all here.
The Obama/Palin Weekend

It's a little after 9 AM Saturday morning, and I'm at Bethune Cookman University. I'm waiting to cover Barack Obama's event focusing on issues which concern women. He's touring with two female governors today. There are a lot of people here, waiting to hear him speak.
Friday evening, during the 6 PM news, I watched Governor Sarah Palin step off a campaign plane at OIA to spend the weekend in Central Florida. She has no public appearances Saturday, and a large rally Sunday afternoon at The Villages.
Newest polls, show the two campaigns deadlocked, tied in Florida. Both sides know that the Interstate Four corridor from Tampa to Daytona Beach is the critical swing area of our state. The folks who live in Central Florida may decide who becomes President, and that's no exaggeration.
What do you think of the fact that this area is so critical in the election and we'll be seing mor of these candidates in the next six weeks? Who has momentum? What issues are you most concerned about? Blog it all here.
Battle Over NASCAR Voters

John McCain went after the NASCAR vote today. The Republican presidential contender visited New Hampshire to attend a NASCAR race. "Thank-you for your support for the men and women in the military," McCain told a meeting of race drivers. He was accompanied by NASCAR legend Richard Petty.
Do you think the NASCAR vote is up for grabs this year, or is it squarely with the Republicans? Blog it here.
The Special Interest Debate

Barack Obama just launched a new round in the special interest debate. His campaign criticized McCain in a new TV ad that notes the campaign's ties to lobbyists in spite of McCain's pledge to end business as usual with the "special interests."
The ad asks,"If seven of McCain's top advisers are lobbyists, who do you thinkwill run his White House?"
The Republican National Committee called the ad an example of "cynical hypocrisy and outlandish attacks."
"Obama's campaign is riddled with former lobbyists and his running mate is a longtime fixture of the Washington establishment," RNC spokesman Alex Conant said in a statement.
What do you think about the special interest and lobbyist debate? Blog it here.
Senator Hillary Clinton is campaigning for Sen. Barack Obama in Florida today. She's talking about the economy in Kissimmee. We are here waiting for her arrival now, as of 10 AM.
Mrs. Clinton will try to convince Florida voters to vote Obama. She hopes to sway women, Hispanics and seniors to vote Democratic in 2008. Those are all groups she did very well with in the Presidential primaries.
Can she do it? blog it here.
Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin plans to sit down this week for her first television interview since John McCain chose her as his running mate. A campaign adviser says they offered an interview to Charles Gibson of ABC News for later this week. It will be done in Alaska.
Do you think Governor Palin should do lots of interviews so people can get to know her or do you think she should only do a few interviews to control the message? What are your thoughts? Blog 'em here.
Should Governor Palin face scrutiny on her record of service from the media, or should the media go easier on her because she's a woman?
Senator Barack Obama hasn't directly criticized Palin's record, but now he is taking the gloves off. Obama today told a rally in Indiana that Sarah Palin pretends to oppose earmarks, but that she has actually accepted the specially targeted spending when it's "convenient."
Do the Democrats run the risk of appearing sexist if they attack Palin's record or is it fair game when you run for Vice President? Blog it here.
Is Democracy Dying?

Is Democracy dying in Central Florida? I'm doing a story today on voter turn out in the primary election. Here are some disappointing numbers.
Projected voter turn out for Seminole County: 16% Orange County 17% Brevard County: 19% Volusia County: 20% Osceola County; 20%
That means fewer than one in five people who live in Central Florida are deciding who will take part in the November elections.
Sure we could blame it on Fay fatigue, but is our Democracy really worth punting over a tropical storm? Is it not worth people's time to take part in early voting, when there are absolutely no lines?
Is Democracy dying? Blog your thoughts here.
It's Obama/Biden in 2008 for the Democrats. What do you think? Biden's strengths or weaknesses? Thoughts on what you think of the Democratic ticket? Blog 'em here.
McCain and Obama Talk Faith

It's one of the most important joint appearances in the Presidential campaign, and it may turn out to be as important as the Fall debates. McCain and Obama are talking character, faith and leadership Saturday night at a joint appearance. They will share the stage and answer questions from Pastor Rick Warren, author of "The Purpose Driven Life."
How important is a Presidential candidate's spirituality or religious convictions to you? Blog your thoughts here.
The End of Edwards' Career?

Is this the end of John Edwards' political career? The rumors were there, but now he has confirmed he had an affair on his wife in 2006 , while she battled cancer. There's still talk about whether he is the father of the woman's child.
Did this admission and his lapse in his marriage end his political career? Do most Americans just accept that politicians cheat? Edwards probably will not speak at the Democratic National Convention and Elizabeth Edwards is less likely to be a vocal ambassador on healthcare and other issues she cares about.
What are your thoughts on the Edwards affair? Blog them here.
Your Vice Presidential Picks

It's coming down to crunch time for the Presidential candidates. The time is quickly coming for McCain and Obama to make their VP picks. There's been talk of a short list on both sides for a couple of months. Now the lists appear to be shrinking.
Who do you think will be the two picks for VP? Blog it here.
McCain on Affirmative Action
Jul 27, 2008 | 3:08 PM PST
Category:
Political
Presidential challenger John McCain said Sunday that he supports a proposed ballot initiative in his home state that would prohibit affirmative action policies from state and local governments. A decade ago, he called a similar effort "divisive."
The reversal comes as McCain, a conservative senator from Arizona, seeks to tailor his policies and rhetoric to independent-minded voters who will determine the outcome of November election.
Both McCain and Democratic rival Barack Obama have accused each other --with good reason -- of "flip-flopping," a charge that carries weight with independents who seek consistency and authenticity in their political leaders.
McCain also says today that Barack Obama set a timetable for withdrawing troops from Iraq as a matter of "political expediency to win his party's nomination."
What are your thoughts on this? Blog them here.
The pundits have been chewing on this question all week long. Was Barack Obama's trip overseas worth it? Did he come off looking more Presidential or did he lose a week campaigning outside the country?
Today, Obama brushed aside Republican criticism of his overseas trip. In London, Senator Obama said both President Bush and Sen. John McCain were moving his way on the key issues of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Hours before flying home, Obama also suggested his poll numbers might dip in the coming days, adding: "We have been out of the country for a week. People are worried about gas prices and home foreclosures."
What are your thoughts? Blog them here.
