Presidential challenger John McCain said Sunday that he supports a proposed ballot initiative in his home state that would prohibit affirmative action policies from state and local governments. A decade ago, he called a similar effort "divisive."

The reversal comes as McCain, a conservative senator from Arizona, seeks to tailor his policies and rhetoric to independent-minded voters who will determine the outcome of November election.

Both McCain and Democratic rival Barack Obama have accused each other --with good reason -- of "flip-flopping," a charge that carries weight with independents who seek consistency and authenticity in their political leaders.

McCain also says today that Barack Obama set a timetable for withdrawing troops from Iraq as a matter of "political expediency to win his party's nomination."

There was a time for affirmative action, but we're past it.

The only thing that it does now is tell blacks and hispanics that it's ok for them not to try, because they can't make it without help from the government.

It's offensive and its wrong. It needs to end

As another old sailor, I want to support McCain, but just can't bring myself to do it. Instead of getting a solid conservative, or even an outspoken moderate, he is turning into just another flip flopper. Sure Obama is worse - much worse- but neither M nor O has shown even a modicum of backbone. At least McCain at least HAD a spine, and unlike Barak Hussein Obama, and served his country gallantly when asked.

Nader '08!

I as well continue to struggle with McCain, however Keith, your post here seems to bend a little left.

I'm confused to how a Democrat can switch positions on an issue, and it is celebrated as "Change" yet for a Republican it is considered "flip-flop..."

"The reversal comes as McCain, a conservative senator from Arizona..." WHAT!!! conservative? Not even close!! Once again, the liberal platform... ANYTHING right of their far left agenda is conservative or "right-wing." Its as if there is no center....
