Today I covered flooding in downtown Deland at New York and Florida.  It floods regularly during the heaviest rains.  Almost four feet of standing water Monday night and almost two feet of standing water at the intersection Tuesday evening.  Several cars stalled out in the water each night.

Why do people drive into standing water or flood waters?  Blog it here.

Hey Droopyz, you hit it right on the head. That's why they are called " sheeple", it is too much trouble to think for yourself, just follow the crowd...right into the same mess. I watch the rescuers on the news pulling people from the rip current and then another "sheeple" runs right into the same area and has to be rescued also. Amazing that some folks live as long as they do.

I drive a Hummer which is made to run thru water up to 28 inches deep.

BUT

Im still not stupid enough to drive thru water more then 4 inches. You never know whats going on under that water and if the road is still there or not.

Man people are just dumb.

People are endlessly stupid that is true , I wonder why it is not part of drivers education ...or is it and I am still underestimating the stupidity of people?
Hey AD is your Hummer shy or something ? Can't believe you own a “water dog” and won't take it swimming ...with what you payed for that thing I would have to find out if I got my monies worth, 28” water crossing 60 degree hill etc...

I think it depends on the car, most car's can run through pretty deep water with out stalling. In some area's people are so used to the floods that it's just part of dealing with the climate. I know in WA people drive through one and two feet of water pretty casually in a truck. Even in most cars a foot of water can be navigated safely if you drive slowly to avoid hydroplaning. Yet again, it comes down to what Adeltonian said, you never know whats in the water or if it's deeper than it appears.

I guess people just don't think it through most of the time.

Right sage. You're over here, home is over there, and the truck says you can make it. :)

What are you supposed to do, camp out every time it rains?

I THINK STUPIDITY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE FACT THAT THE RAIN IS COMING DOWN SO HARD THAT A PERSON MAY NOT SEE THE DEEP WATERS. PERHAPS IF THE CITY HAD A PROPER WORKING STORMWATER DRAINING SYSTEM IN PLACE THE WATER WOULD HAVE QUICKLY DRAINED INTO ITS PROPER PLACE.

You can avoid flooded areas. It's just poeple don't do that, taking a risk of messing up their car going through a flooded area.
