Have you seen the cross right next to the 408 at Good Homes Road near Ocoee?  It towers 200 feet into the sky and you can see it from miles away.

The folks at First Baptist Church of Central Florida put it up as a symbol of hope and their Christian mission.  Church officials say they will hold religious ceremonies at the base of the cross.

What do you think about the huge cross?  Blog your thoughts here.

I live nowhere near that area, but I tried to find a picture of it. The best I could find was a simulation of it on the church's website.

Hopefully, they won't ever receive any complaints or lawsuits from any of the various nutjob groups out there who claims the cross "offends them".

It's a good reminder of bringing about peace in our day as we drive by and see it. If I am not mistaken, I believe there is another one similar on highway 27 going into or around Haines City, and where that cross is at, it really adds beauty to the surroundings.

It's a big cross...I wasn't raised to believe in God, just facts, so as long as it doesn't fall...it's just a big cross to me.

I guess you have to be religious to get it... The cross however does offend some people. What if someone put a large Star of David or a Pentacle somewhere? That's when the complaints would really roll in.

This is the United States Of America, there should be no problem to have those symbols of other's faith put on view. Some would complain, but I'm sure there are a lot of complaints about the big cross, too.

How can we MISS that leviathan?

Everyone I know is calling it "that DAMNED cross"!

There is a point where religious entities throw their weight around too much to bend the rules which rightfully apply to the rest of us. This is such an example.

To make matters worse, there are utterly obtrusive ALL-NIGHT lights which cast beams into the sky.

I don't mind crosses. Even big ones. But there's a limit. This obtrusive leviathan dominates the landscpae and night skies for miles around.

It generates more ILL will towards this church than it does positive.

As for "freedom"...

What if a mall wanted to put up a 200' Vegas-style digital ligthed sign?

Or a car dealership put up a 200' gorilla balloon with searchlights aimed at it all night?

If this cross is fair game, then the ligted signs and giant gorillas are fair game, too. Let's fill the skyline with a plethora of pap! With a cacophony of kitsch!

Ewwwww.

I personally have no Problem with the cross, even though I believe it is today a "Graven Image". Just as the catholic crusifix is. The means of Jesus' death was not what was supposed to be worshiped, but the life and the teachings of the man who died on it.

"Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am your God."(Leviticus 26:1)

"Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments." Exodus 20:4-6 (Deuteronomy 5:8-10)

But I believe every Person has the right to worship as they see fit, and if they need a 200' cross to remind them of the sacrifice, let them keep it.

The cross is a representation of a sacrifice given for sin. Christians believe that Jesus bled and died upon a cross for our sins so that we might have eternal life...and I believe in the story of the cross.
My atheist friend says there is NO GOD, there is NO HEAVEN and NO HELL, the BIBLE is merely a book, and that I am foolish...if HE is right and I am wrong...I've lost nothing by believing...if I am right and HE is wrong...he's lost EVERYTHING.
I have a small cross I carry in my pocket, I have a small cross on a chain that marks special pages of my bible, and I have a cross that hangs in my car...I know that none of them have a magic cure for a disease, none of them are amulets of GOOD LUCK, and none of them will stop hate or violence. BUT they remind me that I know someone who can. If I had the means to erect a thousand foot high cross I would...if it would make people stop for a moment and look up.
We need something to remind us that life here is not the end...for I know for me it makes every day bearable...because I know the man who carried MY CROSS.

WV I am not an atheist, I am a christian. I am sorry if my views offended. I just dont believe that a roman torture device is the best representation of my faith, I would much rather believe in his teachings, it is not the cross that made the man great, it is the man who made all of us forgiven. So I AM a christian but follow no one religion I read the bible and all of the other books that the catholic church didnt believe worthy for us to read. I hold no ill will toward anyone who wants to carry their cross, or star, or prayer rug etc.

Ory, I understand what you say about "if they need a 200' cross ... let them keep it" insofar as ther own rights go. If this church was in a rural neighborhood on a large plot of land or if it were in a city where 200' structures are common, I would not object.

What I object to is a 200' leviathanesque structure being erected in the middle of a RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD, then lit with obtrusive lighting. Such a structure dominates the landscape. Normally, building codes would prevent such monstrosities. Building something like this impacts directly upon the neighborhood. It's easy to say "it doesn't matter" unless you live in the area and have to deal with it, up close, on a daily basis.

WVLADY, the notion that a cross is a symbol of a divine sacrifice is a subjective one. I have no objection to anyone displaying a cross with pride if that is their personal belief. I have SERIOUS objections, however, to the regulations which apply to the rest of us being lifted just because it's a symbol of a majority religion.

This is not medieval Europe! Christianity is not mandated by the government and rammed down our throats. It's a personal thing and should be allowed to be practiced - AS LONG AS IT'S WITHIN THE SAME RULES WHICH APPLY TO THE REST OF US.

Otherwise, we may as well erect a 200' gorilla balloon at every car dealership, and I should be allowed to put up a 200' fork with a meaball on top and claim it's dedicated to the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Great post Ory! I fully agree. Furthermore, where did Jesus ever claim to have died for our sins? That mantality is what has people thinking they can keep on sinning and stay forgiven or saved. Which to me uterly defeats His whole purpose. I believe He came and died trying to show us the way to overcome our sins. And the beauty and grace that comes from doing so.

Pheonix...I do Believe He died for my sins and that with his blood we were all saved...But I Believe that his teachings and not the torture device they hung him on is what should be remembered.
