I am planning to witness the execution of Mark Dean Schwab Tuesday afternoon.  It's nothing I am excited to do.  I don't think watching the life fade out of someone is something to celebrate.  It is a somber and sobering assignment that I accept.  I think it's important that journalists witness an execution like this so we can tell people exactly how justice was carried out for such a heinous crime.

What do you think about the execution of Mark Dean Schwab.  Do you think journalists should witness the execution?  What do you think about the family of Junny Rios-Martinez having to wait seventeen years to get justice?  Blog your thoughts here.

I think anyone who wishes to observe this scum bags execution should be allowed to view it. I am not in favor of watching someone die (and have witnessed too many while on the job)but in this case it is more the justice system finally coming through. Isn't it about time?

I think it's over due and as a journalist you take the good as well as the bad...that's the news. To add, it is brave of you to accept! I wish I could say good luck but luck had better not be the factor! You may think this cold but "Have No Mercy Upon His Soul".

Justice shouldn't take this long. Most appeals are based on technicalities with jury instruction, legal motions, and the judges ruling. DNA, which is over 99% acurate is rarely questioned. If that evidence proves he was there and did it, what is the real reason for any further legal arguement ? It appears to feed lawyers well, but I'd prefer to see them wither on the vine ! He did it, he had a trial,DNA proves he's guilty, the jury found him guilty, now kill him !

I would be glad to put this SCUM-BAG to DEATH and I wouldn't even charge the STATE. I promise you he would feel as much pain as I could make him FEEL with a BIG SMILE ON MY FACE!! It has been 17 years of pain for the parents and too many TAX DOLLARS wasted feeding and housing him, not counting legal fee's...KILL HIM ,,,,,,,,

I think that the death penalty should be expedited after all appeals have been met. I also think that giving convicts so many appeals are a drain on our judicial system.

I don't envy you Keith but I do think that this is an important task for you and one that journalists such as you need to witness. By having an impartial witness experience the event, it allows us to be sure that justice is being met humanely.

I don't know much about the case in hand but I would say that the family should have at least some sense of solace in that this murderer was put behind bars and finally did meet justice.

It should be publicly televised. If you don't like it, don't watch it! The appeals that go on and on are out of control. Once a death sentence has been handed down, and there is absolutely no doubt "who done it," they need to get on with it, within 24 hours, NOT years, of handing down the sentence!

Keith, I am hoping that you will "tell the people" how justice was carried out.
Usually all we hear is "the execution of so and so was carried out today. So and so was pronounced dead at 6:25 p.m. after recieving a fatal dose of such and such adminstered by whos his name under the supervision of I have a job."

I have no remorse for him. He should have been executed years ago. Just remember what he did when you have to watch the execution. Witnessing someone die is something that is a sobering experience, but this is not just a person. He is no different then killing a snake in the grass...

I do commend you for taking on the assignment. For some people it can be a very hard thing to witness.

In my case...Let me inject him...it would be very, very slow and as painful as possible. It's long overdue.

I wouldn't shed a tear...Yes I could watch this one, I can't say that about all of them.
I do feel our system takes to long in caring out the executions. I don't want them to die of natural causes, their victims didn't.

I double-dog dare you to take a blank piece of paper, write, "Psyche!" on it, put it in an envelope, and the run in waving it, saying, "This is from the Governor!"

What! I think we should put executions on pay-per-view!! Some of us back in the 80s were operating in the middle east and got the chance to witness public floggings and such in Saudia Arabia! They actually will allow infidels to be front row and are very proud of their laws and how they effect punishment. Just today Iraq has sentenced a man to death, and he has just 20 days to appeal and get affair in order. THAT is how you do it!

That picture of Junny in his baseball uniform is heart wrenching. He would have been 27 years old. Who knows what he would be doing today, out of college on to a career, playing for the Rays? We don't know. But we do know where his killer has been and after tomorrow he will be dead. That is the law in this State and the punishment has to be carried out. It shouldn't hyped media attention whatsoever.
Here is some information that will wake Floridians up....write your Gov and demand to get started on executing as many as possible. To think, if there are 388 on death row there are at least 388 victims and in some cases the inmate took more than one life.

I feel that journalists should be active participants, maybe help with the prep work, (installing the shunt, filling the plungers with Mark's medicine, master of ceramony)

Personally I think they should bring back Old Sparky just to BBQ this POS! It would be a shame if his head caught on fire just like the last one that died in that chair!

This dirtbag really needs to die a slow painful death and I wish I were there to witness it.

Sixteen years is too long to wait for justice, especially in a case like this!

Put him in a room with the victims family for 2 hours.

If anything remains to be injected, do it with a horse needle and sell pieces of the disgusting piece of crap on ebay.

I think the executions should be televised. If you don't want to watch, then don't tune in.

I can't support the idea of bringing back sparkey... electricity is way to high now! . I believe that “justice delayed is justice denied” we should be executing convicted criminals far faster than we are..but making it a public spectacle is unnecessary...it is the equivalent of taking out society's trash and should be completed with the same fan far as the flushing of a toilet !

RNC, as for the cost of the electricity, I will gladly turn off my circuit breaker 5 minutes before and continue for 5 minutes after that switch is to be thrown just to know that this pos is gone bye bye.

If they wouldn't keep them in for so long it would add up to be cheaper in the long run NOT prolonging their stay in prison for so many years which costs more then sparkey would if carried out within the same year of the confiction!

Do like they do in extreme Islamic law... They actually will sharpen the end of a pole, bend them over, insert it into the anus, and then stand them up one the poll! I've seen this on a recorded tape before and lets just say its not pretty...

Hey Keith, Be prepared for what you are about to witness. It will most definatly change your outlook on life.It will make you appreciate things that you might have not thought about. It is a disturbing thing to witness, but it is a long time coming. It should have been done years ago. It is a tough assignment and I aplaud you taking it. After you file your report, Go have a couple of Cocktails to get your nerves calmed down. Then go home and spend some time with the family they will be key for you to come to grips with this, If you need to. Look forward to your after thoughts on this.

I do not think anyone other than the victim's family should have to watch the execution, for closure, unless they don't feel comfortable with it. If a journalist has to attend, it should just be for the public record, not for sensationalism. I think he should die out of the public eye so it doesn't become a spectacle, like a lot of news does.
I am pleased that the ban on executions has been lifted, but disappointed that he will be sedated and asleep when he receives the fatal dose. The modern interpretation of "cruel and unusual" is a far cry from what our forefathers wanted to prevent when they wrote those words. Just remember that both terms are relative, and should be viewed by the court as relative to the cruelty he inflicted on the victim and the victim's family, and unusual just means not common, so if that method is done more it is not longer unusual.

Hey Abunai, I guess they really get the point then, huh?

They should execute them in an arena and charge admission! They'd fill each seat
