John McCain met Sunday with evangelist Billy Graham and his son, Franklin, at the family's mountaintop retreat. The Republican presidential candidate is actively courting religious voters and conservatives.  He visited privately with the Grahams at their home in western North Carolina.

"We had a very excellent conversation. I appreciated the opportunity to visit with them," McCain said after the 45-minute meeting. McCain's visit to North Carolina was his first sit-down with Billy Graham, 89, and with Franklin Graham.

Do you think John McCain should do more to win the support of religious voters and conservatives, who have had long running questions about him?  Is he playing his cards right with these two groups?  Blog it here.

Well Keith, I adore Billy Graham..may God Bless him he has been around for quite sometime and around just about every politician in history. I also must commend Billy's son.....OMG....he is like his mini me...person just like Dad. God Bless Him. I think McCain is starting in a right foot..I can only pray that he becomes our President (though frankly I would have loved Rudy) but anything BUT A DEMOCRAT......we don't need a democrat in the whitehouse at this time....NO WAY......Lord have mercy

Wisely, the Grahams are keeping their noses clean by keeping them out of the political fray and not endorsing any presidential candidate. It's good to remember that Billy Graham counseled both Democratic and Republican presidents, without partisan prejudice. It's also good to remember that McCain is hardly an example of "moral clarity" -- for heaven's sake, the man abandoned and divorced his severely injured and disabled first wife for the dishy young trophy he's got on his arm now. So much for "for better or for worse, in sickness and in health" and "'til death does us part." If that's morality, they must have changed the meaning of the word to be synonymous with hypocrisy.

Why is this in the news? Is this news only because he "beat" the dems to the punch here? I hope he received wisdom from the Grahams as did several of his predicessors. As for the religious support, didn't I hear Obama talking about his religious past?

Billy Graham is too old and too feeble to be a political supporter or advisor. I am sure he feels his days of service to Country are over and he is in a peaceful wait for his last call to heaven. As far as his son, I don't know. I think they will pretty much stay out of the stupid political race for the Whitehouse. I think Billy Graham is way too intelligent to be caught up on any issues. He knows that we know where he stands on all issues of religion, sin, and the shape of our country. I don't think Obama would have the guts to meet with the Grahams. If they were to be sincere and truthful he wouldn't want to hear what they have to say.

Candy, if you think Franklin Graham is like a mini-Billy, you should see his Grandson, William Franklin Graham IV, the resemblence is even more profound. Franklin Graham used to smoke, and his mother got sick of it so she served him his coffee with his cigarette butts in it. May she rest in peace.

To your question “Should Mac do more to win conservatives” the answer is no , all he needs to do to win all conservatives is to ask them to ready Obama's web cite and take a few seconds to consider his plans...
As far as meeting with religious figures it should not harm him BUT the popular media has manufactured a bit of fear of Christians in the past 4 years to push PC agendas , anti war sentiment and generate a false sense that decisions in this country have been affected by morals and that is (NOW LOL) a “bad thing”....as opposed to a NON commitment to a generic NON belief system.

Billy and Franklin Graham are two people I'd trust to secure spiritual values. They know a fake when they see one. McCain has never held any spiritual values close to the vest just as his side-kick George W. Bush. The Grahams are not likely to get suck into this phony charade.

So are you saying that Graham is not supporting McCain ? That is not what he said in his own words. Or are you trying to make the argument that Obama is “spiritual” in any way ? He by his own account never pays attention in church / or you are supporting him because he is lying (now) and is a hate filled religious fanatic ! It is one or the other , he is 1 godless or 2 the opposite of the KKK ...you can't have it both ways !
