As our country ages, so does the infrastructure.  Things like buildings, bridges, even cemeteries are getting old and in some cases, falling apart.  Cocoa City Council takes up a tough issue Tuesday night.

Should the city spend tax dollars to restore an historic cemetery that is showing its age.  Some graves have been disturbed by tree roots and other grave sites are broken or exposed.  Is it up to the city to pay to restore the cemetery or should local churches step in?  Blog your thoughts here.

If their are still descendants of the deceased around, sorry, they may not like this, but they should pay for PART (not all) of the costs, whomever owns and/or maintains the cemetery should pay most of it, I'd say this to be fair, should be a 80% from the folks/establishment that own the cemetery and 20% from the descendants. No living descendants, then the owner/establishment needs to foot the entire bill 100%.

But HISTORIC CEMETERIES **DO** need to be PRESERVED period. NO MOVING THEM or the GRAVES either!

Restore it!! Preserve it!! But in this day and age at least here in Pittsburgh, being led by liberal Dems, they'd take a very long hard look a the money to be made. Using Immanent Domain they'd move the graves with no regard as to historic value if a buck $$$ could be made. Restore It!!!! I don't see why the churches should even consider paying for it though.

The owners of the property should restore it and keep it nice for all, after all they did make a profit from the land already, and should be maintaining it anyhow.

I agree with Native and Twizled. They should be preserved and kept up either by the city, the property owners or the local churches (if it is their property) and if any living decendants are around then they should contribute as well. Those people buried there deserve at least that amount of respect.

Ooohh heres a thought...why don't we put our "prision road crews" and "juvie inmates" to work on this. Let them do the repairs and maintain the property??

Who owns the cemetery? The owner(s) is/are responsible for the upkeep.

Instead of "prision [sic] road crews" and "juvie inmates," let's sentence all bloggers who can't spell or write English grammatically to work on the cemeteries! There'll be no shortage of labor then...

So, what's the importance of preserving history? If there is money to be made, why not turn your back on those that already paid for their eternal rest. After all, they can not have any say in what happens.
I think it is deplorable that they even think of moving those graves. Someone was paid for perpetual care on those plots and that is the person (or church) responsible for maintaining that land.

Let's put all those bones from these cemeteries in a big bonfire, and build some more strip malls!

Shall we start here? Quotes outside the comma is very bad form.

Remove and dispose of all of the remains and headstones and build a monument/wall on which you list all of the names and dates of death for the deceased.

The historic aspect shouldn't come into play since it seems that most people have little if any regard for history. A knowledge of history is becoming a thing of the past.
