A Vatican official says for the first time in history, Muslims outnumber Roman Catholics. Monsignor Vittorio Formenti told the Vatican newspaper that as of 2006, Muslims accounted for more than 19 percent of the world population.  Catholics were at about 17 and a-half percent. Overall, Christians make up about a third of the world's population.

What do you think about Muslims outnumbering Christians across the world? Blog it here.

I think as long as a religion has positive teachings, there is room for all.

I thought Buddists had more adherents than any other religion, but may need to go on the information hunt once again.

Thanks for the blog.

They outnumber Catholics but not Christians. There is a difference.

also they certainly don't outnumber all the faiths that believe Jesus is the son of God when you put them all together and I doubt they ever will.

I realize that the catholic church believes they are the only christians, but it is far from true. But since they have been formed the vatican has had this issue. they believe they are the holders of the christian faith....WRONG

Actually people don't like to hear it but up till 9/11, the muslims had been the fastest growing religion in America for quite awhile.

You would assume that Al-qaeda's terrorist actions would have hurt the spread of Islam but it didn't put a dent in it in Africa and Asia.

Doesn't surprise me one bit, I would also state that Catholics see protestants as Christians just of a different denomination.

What is surprising me is the chatter on the net about another crusade. Pretty much folly but some on both the Christian and Muslim sides see the war's in Afghanistan and Iraq as the last Crusade. That scares me quite a bit actually.

Islam is NOT the fasting growing religion in America or elsewhere. It may have increasing numbers due to biological proliferation, but NOT by conversion rate. I think the coversion rate to Islam is about 2% while Christianity has had a consistent 10% conversion growth rate. Thus we can say that the birth rate among Muslims exceeds the national average in American and many Muslims have immigrated to the U.S. which accounts for the percentage increase among the general population. When we speak of growth rate in religion we must be clear as to what we are measuring.
