Red light runners, this warning is for you.  Local governments are carefully studying ways to legally crack down on red light runners,  but this weekend Apopka is taking action.  The city has installed an elaborate camera system at the intersection of Main St. and Park Ave.  Starting Sunday, if you run the light, the cameras will videotape you and take a still photo of your license plate.  You'll get a 125 dollar fine in the mail, but good luck trying to appeal it when the cops have it on videotape as evidence.

Orlando is working on a plan to start imposing fines of about 100 dollars per offense on red light runners, starting some time this fall.  Orange County is not going to use cameras to impose fines, but it is putting up signs at 175 intersections reminding drivers that the fine in Orange County is 180 bucks for running a red light.

What do you think about using cameras to fine red light runners?  Will it reduce wrecks and persuade people to stop doing it, as supporters of the idea claim?  Is it an invasion of privacy or a way for cities to raise revenues?  Blog your thoughts here.

It is a safer and more cost effective way to deal with a problem. No doubt it will increase revenues. As far as an invasion of privacy, well the cameras not in your bedroom or bathroom. It's like the NSA monitoring cell phones, if you're not doing anything wrong why would you be worried ?

I posted this (Why Red Light Cameras ARE NOT an invasion of Privacy) in my personal blog space here some time back, but I guess no one ever goes back to see if these issues are being revisted before starting the privacy issue up again, eh?

When? Just sat and watched one run a red light with the Orange County Sheriff sitting right there...he didn't even look up.
So when?

Red Light Camaras would presumably be mounted in public places, if so there is

NO PRIVACY ISSUE

However you do get into a violation of the accused right to confront his accuser and cross examine his/her/and now it's testimony.

In addition the presumption that the owner is operating the vehicle is tantamount to being presumed guilty. You will never be able to prove innocence as you can not prove a negative.

Florida law states that whomever the vehicle is registered to is LIABLE for everything that vehicle is used for. So even if you are not driving (and why I say DO NOT LOAN YOUR VEHICLE!) and you loaned out your vehicle, YOU, THE REGISTERED OWNER ARE STILL RESPONSIBLE for what it is used for! That's been the law herein Florida ever since I can remember and I am a NATIVE and I DO KNOW the laws here when it comes to a lot of this stuff.

So if you loaned your vehicle and someone used it to commit a crime, YOU, the REGISTERED OWNER (unless you have REPORTED THE VEHICLE STOLEN PRIOR TO THE CRIME!) ARE RESPONSIBLE for it's use, wether intended or unintended.

That's just the way it is.

Im glad to see it. Now they can bust those cops who run the red lights and are not in pursuit or on call. We see them all the time here in Deltona just doing whatever they want to and ignoring the laws.

you shouldn't be running red lights in the first place. It's illegal. I am all for the camera's. lets use them and fine each and everyone of the violators. $180.00 is nothing compared to taking a life of someone in a crash.
