A new player has jumped into the presidential race... former conservative Republican, now Libertarian, congressman Bob Barr has announced his cadidacy to run for President of the United States.  However, with the primaries already well under way, is it too little, too late?  Will he act more as a "spoiler" for John McCain, much the same way as Ralph Nader was viewed as a spoiler for Al Gore?  Also, is he really a better choice than McCain?

Below is the article as reported by Embarq News:

Barr announces Libertarian White House bid2008-05-12 18:47:45
By BEN EVANS Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Republican Rep. Bob Barr launched a Libertarian Party presidential bid Monday, saying voters are hungry for an alternative to the status quo who would dramatically cut the federal government.

His candidacy throws a wild card into the White House race that many believe could peel away votes from Republican Sen. John McCain given the candidates' similar positions on fiscal policy.

Barr, who has hired Ross Perot's former campaign manager, acknowledged that some Republicans have tried to discourage him from running. But he said he's getting in the race to win, not to play spoiler or to make a point.

"I've heard from Americans from all walks of life ... they want a choice," he said at a news conference in Washington. "They believe that America has more and better to offer than what the current political situation is serving up to us."

Barr first must win the Libertarian nomination at the party's national convention that begins May 22. Party officials consider him a front-runner thanks to the national profile he developed as a Georgia congressman from 1995 to 2003.

If he wins the White House, he said he would immediately freeze discretionary spending in Washington. He also would begin withdrawing troops from Iraq and consider slashing spending at federal agencies such as the departments of education and commerce — as well as at overseas military bases.

The former U.S. attorney also said he would strictly enforce immigration laws.

"This notion that government owes something to people just because they're here does not resonate with me," he said. "This is not a charity."

Barr, 59, quit the Republican Party two years ago, saying he had grown disillusioned with its failure to shrink government and its willingness to scale back civil liberties in fighting terrorism. He has been particularly critical of President Bush over the war in Iraq and says the administration is ignoring constitutional protections on due process and privacy.

While in Congress, he was a persistent critic of President Clinton and was among the first to press for impeaching the former president. He helped manage House Republicans' impeachment case before the Senate.

He lost his seat to fellow Republican Rep. John Linder in 2002 after a redistricting. He then opened a lobbying and public affairs firm with offices in Atlanta and outside Washington.

The 2004 Libertarian presidential candidate, Michael Badnarik, took less than 1 percent of the vote, placing fourth behind President Bush, Democrat John Kerry and Independent Ralph Nader.

An earlier interview regarding his candidacy consideration can be found at this link: "Is This Man John McCain's Worst Nightmare?"

As of yet, I'm not certain if I could support this man or not.   My first impression is that he reminds me just a little bit too much of Ron Paul.  I guess we'll just have to wait and see until we learn more about this man.

Where are all of the people who have been saying "we need another alternative candidate?" This guy supports the second amendment, would fight illegal immigration, wants to shrink government, spending, etc........where are all of the people who have similar values?

Maybe this is a good test to see if people vote for the candidate or the party?....any bets?

Only issue Barr has IMO is that he will fight FISA reform so that we can fight the technological war on terror at the same level as our enemy. Other than that, I welcome this man with open arms!!

He will not win, but I can honestly sleep knowing I voted for a true conservative. The "silent majority" aka neocons, will likely vote for Barr as a "message vote" to Republicans to get on track.

Today McCain lost my vote anyways after his ridiculous left wing stance on ANWOR and his placating to the left. Thanks to Barr, That $#!+ sandwich that McCain was planning on me being force to take a bite from by voting for him.....AIN"T GONNA HAPPEN!

McCain is about to find out he is in a serious pickle, and that pickle is going to have to be surgically removed from his backside when its all over!

Voting for Barr is akin to voting for Ross Perot.
You will be electing Clintons, and worse.

I am sure you will be happy with throwing away your vote in some sort of stupid protest.

But the ones like you, that DO throw away thier vote in a stupid protest, are basically dooming us to an Obama/Clinton presidency.

You will have to live with that, not me.

Well, we will all have to live with it, but the ones that voted to make it happen will have the most remorse.

That includes voting for the new Ross Perot.

Barr.

It is always easier and more convenient to give in to the status quo/party line. Pointing at past failures as indications that present or future actions will be failures, doesn't leave much hope for the future.

People in this country have been "sitting on their hands" far too long. Excuses have been easy to find.

Aren't some things worth "trying," even if the odds for success don't appear to be good? Voters for Barr might end up with the clearest conscience.

Me throwing my vote away? Hardly... Republican party threw their chances to the wind with McCain, and failed to deliver a party candidate worth anything, and allowed the media to hammer guys like Romney for their religous background without calling the libs out for partisan politics and illustrating that Harry Reid is a long time Mormon and nobody has an issue with him!

Thats just a single example of Republicans NOT doing their job!

Lets be blunt!... Republican party is attacking their own conservatives, and just as guilty of pandering to votes by tossing ethics aside. You watch as the band of 14 become the entire McCain cabinet! (indirectly)

Maybe its just me, but hypocracy is a very bitter taste and I will not call out liberals for doing it then turn around and vote for the party first over my conservatism.

People claim to want "change" because they have been told thats what they want! I am just not a blind follower with unquestionable faith. Betray my trust, and I'm not going to trust you.

Think of the Republican Party as a cheating or neglegent spouse. I know I did you wrong honey but you promised to cherish me remember?.... NOT!

Historical perspective:

Imagine had Lincoln just put the Whig party first no matter what and had never formed the Republican party......

Regardless of all that, you can claim your vote for a person that has no chance of winning, and will likely pull many conservative votes from McCain, is a wise vote.
I believe you will be sorry if you get the result you are hoping for. I know I will.

An Obama/Clinton presidency.

Will you be able to honestly sleep knowing you contributed to that?

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature, and has no chance of being free unless made or kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." -John Stuart Mill
