Police: Dad Threw 4 Children Off Bridge2008-01-09 13:44:34
By GARRY MITCHELL Associated Press Writer

BAYOU LA BATRE, Ala. (AP) — A man angered after a dispute with his wife confessed to tossing his four young children off a bridge, authorities said Wednesday as they searched murky waters for the bodies.

Lam Luong, 37, who is charged with four counts of capital murder, told authorities Tuesday night that he drove to the Dauphin Island bridge and dropped the children from a span that reaches 80 feet in places, said Detective Scott Rivera.

Luong came to coastal Alabama from Vietnam in 1984 and worked in the commercial fishing industry as a shrimper, Police Chief John Joyner and a relative said. He had argued with his wife, Ngoc Phan, before taking the children, he said.

Missing and presumed dead were 4-month-old Danny Luong; 1-year-old Lindsey Luong; 2-year-old Hannah Luong; and 3-year-old Ryan Phan. Phan is not the man's biological child, but Luong raised him from infancy, authorities said.

Authorities were searching a 100-square-mile area and waters as deep as 55 feet. The search included divers and cadaver dogs in small boats, as well as three helicopters, Mobile County Sheriff Sam Cochran said.

Joyner said he feared the search of the Intracoastal Waterway below the bridge would be hampered by bad weather and choppy waters. The bridge extends from the mainland to Dauphin Island, which lies between the waterway and the Gulf of Mexico.

The couple lived with Phan's mother at Bayou La Batre, a fishing village with a large Southeast Asian community. Phan's brother-in-law Kam Phengsisomboun, who is from Thailand, said the couple moved back to the area from Hinesville, Ga., only a couple of weeks ago.

They argued Sunday night and again Monday, he said. Luong left the home with two of the children, then later came back for the other two, he said.

The family initially feared the children had been traded to support a drug habit, Phengsisomboun said. Luong had a crack cocaine habit and had spent an insurance settlement from an automobile accident rapidly, he said, and authorities confirmed Luong had a history of drug offenses.

Luong reported the children missing Monday, and told police that a woman who had the children failed to return them, authorities said. Phengsisomboun said he was later told by investigators that a witness had seen someone throw a bundle from the bridge and then saw three children in a nearby car.

Phan, 23, was in seclusion Wednesday morning at her mother's brick home, the front porch cluttered with children's shoes.

WELL....  I guess he SHOWED HER!!

I think the title is wrong.  Any so-called "father" like the one above does not deserve the title of "Dad".

This seems to be yet another trend.  First we hear of people throwing stray dogs and cats off a bridge, then a mother throws her children off a bridge, now this knucklehead above.  I can't help but believe that the sensationalism by the media that is associated with previous incidents gave this idiot "the idea", sort of like the Columbine copy cats.

I'm not really a believer in Hell, but if there is, I bet there's a special place reserved just for monsters like him.

J_Darrowin, Fox just ran a clip on this and stated that being charged with 4 cases of CAPITAL murder he might just get the death penality. Is there any doubt in anyone's mind that he did it ? I've got a spot reserved for him hear on earth. Shoot his BLEEP to death, tie some cinder blocks to his legs for ballast, chunk him off the same bride. Let the gators, turtles and catfish dispose of his UTTERLY worthless BLEEP !

You aren't kidding Meb452m! I tell you, what the HELL is wrong with these people! I like the way you would deal with the situation. I would do the same thing. I just hope he doesn't sit on death row for 20 years while taxpayer money gets wasted on a piece of trash like that!

If he even thinks of uttering the phrase "God told me to do it", I'll just have to turn Meb loose on him.

Father Denies He Dropped 4 Off Bridge

BAYOU LA BATRE, Ala. (AP) — A man accused of tossing his four young children off a coastal bridge to their deaths denies killing them and says police harassed him into making a false confession, his attorney said Thursday.

Authorities say Lam Luong confessed to killing the children, ranging in age from a few months to 3 years, a day after reporting them missing and claiming a woman had taken them.

But Luong's appointed attorney, Joe Kulakowski, said his client told him he falsely confessed under pressure after being questioned Monday night and the entire day Tuesday.

"When police yelled, `We know you killed them,' he at some point realized they weren't going to believe him," Kulakowski said.

"We don't have any bodies. There's a lot of emotion and nobody knows the facts right now," he added.

Based in part on a witness's account, investigators said the four children were thrown from the highest part of the two-lane Dauphin Island bridge Monday morning, a point about 80 feet above the Intracoastal Waterway. Luong had had an argument with his wife earlier, authorities said.

Crews searching near the bridge and into the Gulf of Mexico have found no sign of the children. State and local teams were to continue searching Friday, but the Coast Guard announced Thursday that it was pulling out.

"Many factors go into a decision like this and believing that the children are not alive at this time, we must ensure our crews are ready to respond to other search and rescue cases," Coast Guard Capt. Ed Stanton said.

Prosecutors have charged Luong with four counts of capital murder, and he was ordered held without bond Thursday in Mobile.

Kulakowski said Luong told him the children were taken Monday morning by a woman named Kim who claimed to know their mother and would get them food and clothes. He said they were not returned later Monday as promised.

He said officers should be searching for Kim and a second woman who left with the children in a van.

Prosecutors said Luong, 37, gave that account after the children were reported missing Monday but confessed after investigators pressed him on holes in his story.

"We believe he killed the kids by tossing them off the bridge," said District Attorney John Tyson Jr.

Presumed dead were Luong's children Hannah, 2, Lindsey, 1, and Danny, 4 months; and 3-year-old Ryan Phan, who was raised from infancy by Luong but is not his biological child.

Tyson said Luong's wife, 23-year-old Kieu Ngoc Phan, discovered her four children missing Monday and went to police with Luong.

In Bayou La Batre, a fishing village where Luong had worked briefly as a shrimper, many held out hope the children would be found alive but also despaired over the details of their disappearance.

Nguyen Bon, a nun at a Buddhist temple, said she's been in constant prayer for the children since they disappeared. A temple prayer service was planned Thursday night for the family.

"We're hoping the four kids will be found alive," said temple member Devan Phan, who is not related to the children's family. "There's really nothing we can do but sit tight and pray. Hope for a miracle."

In his first court appearance Thursday, Luong was shackled hand and foot and wore a bulletproof vest amid heavy security at the brief bond hearing in Mobile.

In denying bond, District Judge Charles McKnight described the allegations as "heinous."

"I've never seen anything like this before," he said.

Luong, who came to the U.S. from Vietnam in 1984 and until recently had been living in Hinesville, Ga., had a crack cocaine possession charge pending in Hinesville.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature, and has no chance of being free unless made or kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." -John Stuart Mill
