This just in... Central Floridians are terrible drivers!

My question--- Why?

We don't deal with snow?  No black ice?  No mountain passes or windy roads?

Why can't we drive- so what makes us all so bad?

A new study puts on the naughty list.

150 out of 200 cities.

What say you?

Two reasons...

Illegals with no drivers license.

Transplated New Yorkers who have never driven in their lives, always taking the subway or taxis. They move to Fla, get behind the wheel, and don't have a clue on how to drive!!!

I think bad driving reflects ones personality. If you are a bad driver you're also a very selfish person. People that wait until the last minute to merge, people that cut off others and think the laws do not apply to them are all very selfish acts. It is funny to me when I see someone zoom pat me because they are in suck a hurry and then you end up right next to them at the next light or exit.

Well, it doesn't surprised me Heidi. I thought driving in NY was bad but really I have been here 3 years now and this is crazy world in a heaven for crashes and atrocheous accidents by far some of the worst I've seen up North even with the snow. (lol just like you said on the news) EVEN MORE SAD...is why would someone drive a vehicle THAT DOESN'T HAVE A FREAKING LICENSE......putting their lives in danger let alone all others on the road...Happy Fourth and please be safe

I am just guessing on this, but, I think less than 10% of the drivers in central Florida learned here. The other 90% are transplants... having a large melting pot of drivers is the largest factor IMHO.

People from Florida driving in snow is dangerous... people who can't drive in the rain down here are worse (people drive faster in the rain thn in the snow)!

Heidi, no we don't have all that to contend with, it's just that all those bad drivers came from where they do have those problems, and they don't know how to act here!

Probably because your test is in a parking lot...And the bad drivers are from right here in sunny Florida...They are natives to this state and the local law enforcers don't give a rats BLEEP how bad you drive...I rarely see local cops anywhere unless there is an accident or something like that happening. So don't blame the people from other states moving in...Florida drivers just suck...They can't even follow their own rules...

Maybe its overconfidence BECAUSE Floridians don't deal with ice, snow, mountain passes, etc.

That, combined with lax road rules concerning pedestrians/cyclers (drivers do not have to stop at a crosswalk at a left or right hand turn if someone is on it, for example, even if the pedestrian has the right of way. If they do, you could've fooled me, because I NEVER see them stop) and just being careless in general all combine for dangerous drivers.

All in all, I still think Italy and St. Thomas have the worst drivers. Floridians are just more inconsiderate.

I use to be a courteous driver, until I moved here. In my 15 years of living here, I no longer let people in from side streets, why...because I don't get a thankyou or a wave appreciating the thought of letting another driver in. I use to complain about Florida drivers being notorious for speeding up not allowing another driver to get in front of them so they can make there exit off the expressway. Now I do the same. On multi lane roads like OBT & 436, drivers will drive in the left lane for miles and will turn their right turn signal on and they expect other drivers to allow them in. You knew you had to make a right turn but decided to wait til the last possible second to switch lanes. For get it, I will not let you in. You liked it there so much you can stay there. With duel left turn lanes, you get a driver that is in the inside left turn lane and wants to make an immediate right, again, I will not let you in. You knew you had to make an immediate right but you chose to get in the other lane. After about 2 or 3 years of living here, being a considerate driver went out the window.

add to the fact that florida allows applicants for a license to take the test in spanish! WHEN have you ever seen road signs in florida printed in spanish? no se habla englasia, stay off the fraggin roads til you learn it!

Isn't the drivers license bureau operated by the state? I believe that it is. And knowing that, aren't they in violation of the English Only law which the State House in Tellahassee passed back in 1988. Maybe we need to start writing letters to our state representatives about this.

I've been here for a little over a week and have noticed how bad the drivers are here. No signals, running red lights, camping out in the left lane...turning into/out of the wrong lane, etc...

I moved here from TX...trust me, you don't have a "illegal" problem!

You are correct, I have not been to South FL...but I would doubt many around there are "illegal"...

I was referring to the drivers I have seen around here...since that is what the post was about.

I wonder if Miami is on the list and where...If there are a lot of "illegals" there, that would help to validate or invalidate that argument.

Cubans are allowed to stay if they get one foot on land. Haitians get one foot on land and they get sent back. I know Cuba is a communist country, but if you allow one in then you allow all of them in. Send one back then send them all back. Personally, coming to this country by a home made boat or raft isn't the legal way even if one is escaping a communist country.

Go out towards Orlando International on 436 around the 408, you'll see a large population of Hispanics and the same for Osceola County south of Orange County. South Orange County is getting to be the same. At one time Osceola County had the fastest growing Hispanic population in the state. But I'm assuming that you are talking about people from Mexico and Central America.

I am just talking about illegals. Cubans are here legally. By definition, "legally" means the law says it is OK...since the law says OK, they are legal.

I have noticed a lot of hispanic oriented stores in Kissimmee, but have not seen/met many...in TX you run in to them everywhere.

I've been down here six months now.

Compared to the drivers in the NY/NJ/CT area, drivers here are a cakewalk.

You'll absolutely have the requisite percentage of morons -- they are nationwide -- and world-wide, probably. You'll never escape the morons -- there's too many of them.

But the drivers here aren't as downright nasty as the ones up North.

The quieter roads almost make up for this intolerable heat. I would pay good money for a day's worth of sub-60s temperature!

My roommate and I always drive the speed limit. One reason is we should and the other is we can't afford a ticket. I would guess at least 80% of the time we have people almost touching the bumper of our vehicle. We refuse to go faster and most of the time we are on 4 lane roads. So they have another lane to get around but a lot of them will not do it. Its like they just enjoy doing it.
Recently I had a car behind me on my bumper and someone pulled out in front of me so I had to slam on the brakes. I know only by God graces did the guy behind me missed me. I hate it when people ride others bumpers. It is so dangerous doing that.
I understand they need to get to places and they might be running late but by doing this they not only put their life in danger of getting injured, they are putting mine in danger of getting injured. Plus, they might get a ticket. I wish people would just slow down.
The funny thing is, most of the time they don't get any further down the road than I do because when we come to any lights there they are.
I just saw the board at an intersection that shows vehicle deaths so far this year. The number is all ready at what last years total was. This is only July there is 5 months to go, 6 if you figure this one just started. So many people have lost their love ones and I bet a lot are do to speeding. Its a shame.

unbe -- the safest way to drive is to match the speed of those around you. To rigidly stick to the speed limit when everybody else is 5-10 mph higher is creating a potentially dangerous condition, not to mention incurring some road rage.

It's common sense -- the severity of a collision is determined by the difference in speeds of the two objects involved.

On tailgating:
if I'm driving too slow in the fast lane, I deserve it. But if I'm the last car in a line of cars, or if I'm in the middle or slow lane, please get off my BLEEP. Detroit? Please offer rear-mounted twin 50 cal. machine guns on my next vehicle?

And YOU are AN IDIOT! I NEVER took my driving test in a parking lot, UNLESS you consider I-4 a parking lot! My test was ON THE ROADS and if I didn't follow the rules, I WOULD NEVER HAVE PASSED IT!

You are WRONG, it IS NOT the NATIVES you dimwit, I FOLLOW POSTED SPEED LIMITS, TURN MY LIGHTS/WIPERS ON when it rains, I SIGNAL to CHANGE LANES or WHEN MAKING A TURN (100' FROM my turning point!), I DO NOT MAKE ILLEGAL TURNS ON RED (POSTED NO TURN ON RED), I REFUSE TO CROSS RR TRACKS UNTIL the FLASHERS ARE "OFF" and GATES UP, but who do I see BREAK EVERY ONE OF THESE RULES?, that I WAS TAUGHT and DO OBEY, that's right, MANY "OUT-OF-STATE" plates ALWAYS ARE THE ONES doing this. Some may have a FLORIDA TAG, but they ain't no NATIVE, if they were they'd KNOW HOW TO DRIVE PROPERLY HERE!

unbelieveable, try doing what I did. hook up a button on your dash that activates your brake lights, even when you don't hit the brakes. then when some idiot tailgates you, wait til they're close enough and push the button. the screech of brakes from behind is satisfying as you continue on your way. LOL. and if someone rearends them you get a twofer

polecatextreme, yea don't get caught with that, you won't like it.

But I know what you're saying, I did that to a vehicle many years ago, only difference was I also added a PA Speaker, Amplifier and a recording of squealing brakes, so when the brake lights came on, so did the sound effects, I know of two dimwits that ended up hitting a telephone pole because they were tailgating me and I hit the "secret" button that turned on the brake lights and the screeching tire effect. Both of them deserved just what they got, but today I wouldn't do it, just too many unmarked patrol cars out there that could catch you or they could be one of the ones tailgating you too!
