Where are you?  Are you in the United States of America????

I admit I asked someone this very question on the phone a couple weeks ago. My husband was standing next to me and looked appalled. His eyes were screaming... "why would you be so rude as to ask someone that"?

(I admit - it was not polite... and I am sorry. If only I knew her number so I could apologize!)

I'll tell you why I was SOOO rude. I'd been on the phone for about 15 minutes. I was running in circles with a woman.

I was stuck at a store and needed to find out where my nearest bank branch in the area was. She kept asking me for a zipcode of where I was at. I would give her the zipcode and she would say there was not a bank in that city. I would tell her that there may not be bank branch there but could she check surrounding cities and zipcodes.

She had no clue what I was talking about. I said if there is not a branch in Altamonte could we try Lake Mary or Maitland. I figured she was out of state I did not however think she was in the PHILIPPINES!

   (it is gorgeous there)

I'm all for saving money. But seriously? This woman was of no use to me. I needed someone who understood the good old US of A.

I say bring the telemarketers home!

50 States to choose from  I'm sure we could find some college kids who'd love to answer my questions!

Its all about profit. I lost a good paying job once because the company found out they could pay 3 other people the ammount they were paying me. But it is true these greedy companies need to bring the jobs back to the USA so us Americans can go back to work.

Someone called me last week. I told them, "Even though you are speaking English, there is a communication barrier, and I can't understand you so, Bye-Bye." I didn't feel the least bit sorry. If someone wants to talk to me, they need to speak English, and speak it so I can understand it.

Well, it's dangerous to keep someone on the phone when you don't understand them. There's no telling what you may actually agree to, with out ever knowing you were asked. LOL

I totally agree with everyone here but I'd like to also add that we need Americans to learn to speak English also. Not picking on any one in particular, but "where you be" "I be goin to da hood" and my favorite "I axed him".

oh man oldvamp, i used to say "I axed him" until when i went into the military, the guys were making fun of me. LOL To be honest, i didnt notice that I was speaking incorrect English. I was just speaking what I was taught at home so I guess this goes to show that we parents HAVE to watch what we say and how we speak at home. Kids pick that stuff up. I will teach my children that if i EVER hear the N word or for that matter ANY derogatory word coming out of their mouth I am bringing back the soup in the mouth trick and DARE anyone to accuse me of child abuse.

I'm glad you were not offended afelton. Those comments were not meant to offend anyone only to emphasize the need for us legals to speak correctly. As for the "N" word, I feel that is the same as calling me a whopp or guinny. I do not nor have I ever been a part of the Mafia. It is derogatory and not acceptable. Did you ever hear Bill Cosby's rendition of the way these youths are speaking now? He asks how many doctors or lawyers ask "How you be?" or the like.

"I say bring the telemarketers home!"

I'll go one better... I say we get rid of them altogether! Well, the ones that call ME, anyway.

It's not really all about profit, its more about the ridiculous taxes the companies need to pay for their profits (capital gains tax), as well as having to fight environmental groups to get any production done. It also has to do with the unfair trading practices we face against Europe and Asia. When these are taken care of, the companies can stop taking their businesses overseas. Its usually more of a matter of the company being able to stay in business than greed. Not saying thats ALWAYS the case, but generally.

its the norm now with CSRs- My satellite company uses them (Dish) , my bank (Wamu),
my cell phone (T Mo) etc

I believe they want us to not call and thats one of the reasons they do it- it means they hire less CSRs and even in a country like India, they would be saving money.

I hate it

I actually work for a major credit card doing customer service work over the phone. I can't tell you how many times people ask me where I am. When I say FL, they are so relieved. I don't think it's rude at all to ask. There are two times when there should be no excuse for a language or communication barrier. One is finance and the other is medical. There is just no excuse for hiring people who can't communicate clearly.
