The Vatican has banned Tom Hanks and  the makers of a prequel to The Da Vinci Code from filming in its grounds or any church in Rome, describing the work as “an offence against God”.

Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon and Audrey Tautou as Sophie Neveu in The Da Vinci Code

Angels and Demons, is the second to be shot in Rome.  This one though is a book set entirely in Rome's Churches- whithout them the story might be a bust.

Archbishop Velasio De Paolis, the head of the Vatican’s Prefecture for Economic Affairs, said that Brown had “turned the gospels upside down to poison the faith”.

“It would be unacceptable to transform churches into film sets so that his blasphemous novels can be made into films in the name of business,” he said, adding that Brown’s work “wounds common religious feelings”.

-----------------

So after all that --- I have to ask.

Did you read Dan Brown's books Angel's and Demon's and the Da Vinci code?

I'll admit right now that I loved them.  Great writing - great suspense.  I do recognize that the material could be offensive.  Religion is not something to be made light of - or fun of.  I can see where the Vatican is coming from.

So I ask ... is it offensive to You?  Are you happy the Vatican gave film makers the boot... or is this just a work of fiction and they're making too much of it?

P.S. Dan Brown is working on another book set right here in the good old USA.  It's going to explore the signs and symbols of our government and the Free Masons.  It is supposedly called "The Solomon Key" Can't wait!

As in another blog these books/movies are ment for entertainment. People take things too seriously and need to learn to relax and enjoy life. However the church owns the buildings and have a right to say no to film crews.

I debated sticking this one in entertainment. But I figure when the Vatican gets involed it's news.

It is their property and their right to decide what or what is not filmed in those churches. If it is morally offensive to them and they don't want it, they don't have to allow it. I think more people and institutions SHOULD take a stand for their personal and corporate convictions. By holding this position, I am not condoning the doctrines or practices of the Roman Catholic church ... just supporting freedom of conscience rights of private property owners.

Chuck Norris is better at getting confessions than a priest.

To argue with Chuck Norris is the definition of insanity.

Star Wars ... Chuck Norris isn't afraid of "the Force," Chuck Norris IS "the Force."

Those are just a few things I say, about me ... but wait, I'm NOT Chuck Norris, I just look exactly like him :)

If the Vatican owns the property, it's within their rights to determine how it's used -- movie studios can alway build their own sets. But if we started removing everything that everyone considered an "offense against God," there wouldn't be much left in the way of human life, economy or culture -- including Chuck Norris.

Mater I heard the church was saying your movie was offensive. Remember the scene where the tatoo was seen by everyone as the car went into theoffice of the motel,

Wonder if they will make a film bashing Muslims... probably not... Christians are always attacked at will by Hollyweird.

I have not read either book. I have seen the movie, and it was stupid. Totally stupid. Good author? NOT. Hanks could do better as well.

BUT, since the Catholic church does not like it? All the more reason to do it. Anything that offends the Catholic church is alright with me :o)

Its the Vatican's property, so they're certainly entitled to do whatever they want with it, including banning people they don't want inside. I can't argue with that.

That being said, I can't say I'm offended by movie either. Personally, I DID like the movie. I haven't read either book yet, probably should. Books always go into more detail than the movies do.

its there right to do what they feel falls with in their religious doctrine. I don't agree with it but they feel it is sacrilegious and as such they don't want to support it.

I loved the movie yet I never read the book. I'm looking forward to the next one myself.
