THIS ARTICLE AND POLL COMES FROM THE LANCASHIRE EVENING POST.

Most people think God is a man

A majority of people think God is male with nearly half of the population in Britain believing that all religions discriminate on grounds of gender. Only 1% of people think of God as female, with 62% considering God to be male, the online survey conducted earlier this month of 1,050 adults in Britain found.

The survey showed around three quarters, or 73%, of those who classified themselves as Christian considered God as male.

Just under a half, or 49%, of people think all religions "fundamentally discriminate on grounds of gender'' and 56% think all religions discriminate on grounds of sexual orientation, according to the poll findings.

But when asked whether religion has "no place'' in modern life only 29% agreed while 62% disagreed.

The poll was commissioned by the Movement for Reform Judaism in Britain to coincide with its launch of its new daily and Sabbath prayer book, or Siddur.

The prayer book removes male descriptions of God such as King, Father and Lord, in favour of "gender neutral'' expressions such as Eternal One and living God.

It includes mentions of prominent women from the Old Testament for the first time in prayers such as the Amidah, the central prayer of the Jewish liturgy.

It also provides prayers for 21st century problems such as environmental and natural disasters and prayers for depression, miscarriage and the death of a child. How do you describe God?

Probably has something to do with the prayer, "Our Father, thou art in Heaven". Also, didn't Jesus continuously refer to God as "his Father"? I'm no religous expert, but I'm guessing this is why most believe God is a male figure. Besides, who is generally seen more as the "authority" figure... men or women?

"Just under a half, or 49%, of people think all religions "fundamentally discriminate on grounds of gender'' and 56% think all religions discriminate on grounds of sexual orientation, according to the poll findings."

I can just as easily claim that football, basketball, track events, and especially boxing, are racially discrimitory, as these sports are all dominated by black atheletes. After all, there are few whites in these sports, so therefore, it must be true, right? Of course it isn't. Its usually those interpreting the religion to their followers, twisting it in their own vision, who are discrimitory against women. Look at how Islam is practiced in some countries. For that matter, look at that "Ranch Cult" in Texas. I don't see the males dressing up in 19th century clothes, do you?

"The prayer book removes male descriptions of God such as King, Father and Lord, in favour of "gender neutral'' expressions such as Eternal One and living God."

Sounds like good 'ol political correctness strikes again. This is completely unnecessary. I don't mind the mentioning of the prominent women more often, though.

Just some views from a heretic.

"Our Father, thou art in Heaven".
I'm with you Mr Darrowin. I see God as Man. If we have a Father though I like to think we have a Mother in Heaven too. I hope they're both looking out for us :)

God is a male hence the term Father.
The Catholic church honors Mary as the Mother of Jesus so there is a prominent woman figure there to pray for us.

Christ/religion is more a state of mind. You either believe or you don't.

If you're looking for an answer as to whether Christ is male or female, then I think you're overthinking your belief.

My thought to whether Christ is male or female....I don't know.
I think Christ is portrayed as a male to make it easier for people to comprehend Christ's existence.

The Bible shows that God is above and beyond all created, physical and material existence, so he is neither male nor female. To reveal himself, his nature and his character to humans, though, he had to resort to the limitations of human language, so he described himself as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

As for Christ, there's no mystery there. How can say "I don't know if he was male or female" when the Bible clearly records he was circumcised eight days after his birth?

The reason the majority thinks that way is because it states in God made man from his own image. There's a gimme! And yet contradicts by also claiming to be Spirit!

The bible was writting by man so of course the image is self inflicted from the wording and descriptions given throughout the book! It's only a guide line to live by written by the hand of man with great intelligents! Look how far it has come since it was first printed!

UK is really going secular and when you see these Religion shows on Discovery or Explorer Beware the "experts"... they consist of secular reformists who discount the Bible and its truth and try to rewrite scripture. That is what Lancanster is all about. Grab your faith and as Jesus HImself warned... in the end days they will try to screw with your faith and change things and false profit you to death.... paraphrased mega.

I think to assume God has human attributes of any kind is to diminish her power.

Well truthguys for what I have studied all those that will go to heaven sort of speak or live in the golden city......will be taken first like a thief in the night. Wow..I learned that when I was 16 and never forgot that. Now, I believe when you passed away is a different way of route..but I don't think we are separated as much as I wouldn't want to be next to some stinking child molester..but it is said when you die you have no recollection until your turn to go before the Big guy who will then give you an entire book of life of all the things wrong and right. Then again, these are theories we have NO LIVING PROOF...I think as long as one has faith AND DO THE RIGHT THINGS according to the Bible...guess we will be alright! Yes, Lauren..that was sneaky...just got it.....lol

The Bible was written by men, so of course they got full of themselves.
The passage, “made man in God's image”, was referring to eternal life, not to two arms, two legs, and an inside-out vagina.
I see God as a power, not as someone with human features.
I usually refer to God as She, but I don't think of God as a woman.
The only ridiculous thing would be to think of God as a man.

God is a giant, fire-breathing space monster and we are apparently somewhere near the colon. ;) Male or female doesn't matter. Maybe we are asexual.

Mary doesn't pray for anybody. Jesus is the intercessor between God and man. To suggest otherwise goes against scripture. For more on this subject, read your Bible.

Terms to describe God have always been masculine. Is God a Man? No. God is God.

Jesus, who is God in the flesh was a man.

IT can be a complicated question, but the short answer is that God is masculine, and Man is created in OUR image (the trinity)

No God is not a man or a women. He is GOD, people use the masculine form when talking about Him. Man made the bible and it was in their image they could only see and relate to.

I agree with sipedo and sensiblejoe for the most part, but I believe both masculine and feminine come from GOD.God is a Spirit and embodies both masc and fem principles within.Where did men get their masculinity from? GOD.Where did woman get their femininity from ? GOD.Masculine and feminine already existed before the creation of mankind (both male & female)It had to have already existed in order for it to be distributed, when GOD made man in his own image.

At the time the prayer was written wasn't it proper speech to assume the entity was male if the gender was unknown? Just curious, because until about 50 yrs ago that is how English classes were taught.

God is not a man. God is a Spirit. So He is not male or female in the sense that we know the genders. But the Bible has given the male the responsibility to provide for his family, to guide them, to discipline them when needed and to be their spiritual leader. Because God does those same things for his children, in that sense, God is male and is always referred to using the masculine.
