WHEN YOU DIE - DO YO WANT TO BE LIQUIFIED?

CONCORD, N.H.  —  Since they first walked the planet, humans have either buried or burned their dead. Now a new option is generating interest — dissolving bodies in lye and flushing the brownish, syrupy residue down the drain.

The process is called alkaline hydrolysis and was developed in this country 16 years ago to get rid of animal carcasses. It uses lye, 300-degree heat and 60 pounds of pressure per square inch to destroy bodies in big stainless-steel cylinders that are similar to pressure cookers.

No funeral homes in the U.S. — or anywhere else in the world, as far as the equipment manufacturer knows — offer it. In fact, only two U.S. medical centers use it on human bodies, and only on cadavers donated for research.

But because of its environmental advantages, some in the funeral industry say it could someday rival burial and cremation.

THIS BRINGS UP THE MORBID QUESTION- WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE DONE WITH YOUR REMAINS?  I WOULD LIKE TO BE PUT IN A BOX 6 FEET UNDER!

Cremated and ashes spread over my beloved deep blue seas. If you want to show your concern for me, do it while I'm ALIVE and can appreciate it. The flowers and tears in front of a carved, marble stone do nothing but let you ease your guilt for not having shown a little care and concern while I was alive.

Massage your guilt somewhere else .... I won't be provide you a monument for your "mea culpa" therapy.

I'm leaning towards cremated. Make it cheaper for those that have to... well... dispose of you.

At any rate, I guess it doesn't matter, as long as none of this is done to me while I'm still alive. Now THOSE would be bad ways to go.

Death isn't bad... its the dying part that stinks.

Sarge! I'm sure those who love you, and those who don't know you (including me!) would much rather not watch you suffer the agony of a live cremation! I have made it very clear to my family that my wishes are to be cremated. This little body of mine is a mere vessel, imperfect, and not worth stuffing or burying for later examination. Funerals are rituals for the living. I want people to celebrate my life, and to remember HOW MUCH I LOVED THEM! If I had a choice, my ashes would either be scattered in the woods of my Grandpa's farm, or in the ocean, in between Oahu and Molokai.

I always said I wanted to be Cremated, but my wife doesn't belive in that, and she wants to be Buried. She has stressed that she wants to be buried next to me. After thinking about it some more, I told her I don't really care what happens to my body, as once i'm dead, I don't care.

I hope its fast, because adding heat and pressure is not very energy efficient . Another method of disposing of a body is a simple vat of hydrochloric acid, a 170* pound body will be completely dissolved in less than 48 hours (including the bones) and it does not require any heat or pressure...I am just saying with a very real energy crisis going on why waste when we don't have to.

*A larger body will be completely dissolved in 72 hours or less.

wow RNC, that's definitely something to think about (carefully!) :)
I think I want to be cremated, too. Just get it over with.

I know gross (but true and “green” LOL) FYI for those of you who prefer cremation you should consider buying a pre pay cremation certificate, this will take care of all the cost and details when you pass on and will save a lot of money for your family. To buy one you will pay the current rate for a cremation (an urn or something is extra , standard service includes a cardboard box) but you will never have to pay more , no mater how high the price goes. To buy one contact the “North American Cremation society”

I'd bet that the Mafia would love to get their hands on this technology!

Personally, cremation is fine by me. But on the other hand, you're DEAD. You'll never know the difference.

Don't think I could be burned. Better just bury me next to my dad, uncle, and aunt. That way I'll get a manicure in the process....ha!

I have always opted for Cremation of any remains AFTER they take what they can use and study what they want. For a long time my family thought I was nuts but they understand now that its not important what happens to the body. What is important is that even at the end you have the opportunity to help others on your way out. We all will live forever in the hearts and minds of those who knew us and for me thats all that counts.

Has anyone recently priced Funeral Costs compared to Cremation????

In ground burial= Vault, Plot or mausolium, Casket, Service.

Creamation= Urn, necklace with ash in clear pendant, cremation marker.

The cremations are pretty cool they make a bench that holds two urns or a marker that holds 1 -2 urns or you can opt for the community urn cubbys on the mousoliums.

The whole liquifing idea sounds kinda gross, Oops I just drank Cousin Suzans liquid.. :p

That's totally disgusting..flushed down a toilet...the tree huggers would have a problem with that. What is wrong with...

It's the year 2022... People are still the same. They'll do anything to get what they need. And they need SOYLENT GREEN.
Soylent Green Is People....pretty tasty
From the 1973 movie. That is pretty bad too! Who knows what they put in those dietary supplements???????

Actually Signal I have priced this out.

Having lost both my parents in less than 4 months I had the unfortunate task of having to make all the funeral arrangement. Both Mom and Dad had purchased their final arragements years ago but they had plots. In the last several years they decided to be cremated instead. While neither wanted any kind of "service" I was rather surprised at the final cost for them. Mom's totaled $1988. The most expensive out of pocket was the urn that was $250.00. When Dad passed a few months later his was $1784 because we got a discount, but I had to purchase a new urn since they wanted their ashes mixed together. That urn cost me $587.00 and it looks like a giant black lego block made of marble. Had I buried them both instead the cost was going to be a little over $11,000.00 and that was with no services.

I have long been a fan of cremation not only because of the expense but because it really is the only logical choice. We are running out of room to bury people and I have never understood those that will spend hours upon hours talking to a hunk of ground and marble. Seems to me that if it was that important they should have spent the time while the person was alive.

This reminds me of some of the story's of bells being placed on strings and put in coffins due to the alarming amount of people being buried alive in the Victorian Era.

With that note, I think buried would still be my option. Either way, I'll be dead and in the end it wont really matter.

I could care less! I have no family and no kin. I have made no reservations on what happens to my carcass after I kick off! that will be the governments problem! No family, no arrangements, nobody for the greedy politicos to dun for the cost. let them and my creditors fight for what I leave behind, I could care less! they made the rules, let them abide by them!
