I have noticed a couple of posts on here making comparisons between the recent disasters in Middle-America with that of Katrina..While the comparisons are valid the FIRST thing that came to MY mind was how uneceesary it was to go THAT far..WHY bother when the SAME comparisons can be made using Katrina ALONE..We SEEM to have TWO Katrionas anyway so WHY not use THEM???

The Katrina as a whole and the Katrina of a VERY FEW in the city of New Orleans..

Below is what I MEAN by this…

Hurricane Katrina

It was the sixth-strongest Atlantic Hurricane ever recorded and the third-strongest hurricane on record that made landfall in the United States.

Hurricane Katrina weakened as it moved inland, but tropical-storm force gusts were recorded as far north as Fort Campbell,, Kentucky on August 30,, and the winds damaged trees in New York..The remnants of the storm brought high levels of rainfall to a wide swath of the Eastern United States and rain in excess of 2 inches fell in parts of 20 states.. A number of tornadoes associated with Katrina formed on August 30 and August 31 which caused minor damages in several regions. In total, 62 tornadoes formed in EIGHT states as a result of Katrina… The remnants of Katrina were absorbed by a new cyclone to it’s east across Pennsylvania.. This second cyclone continued north and affected Canada on August 31... In Ontario there were a few isolated reports of rain in excess of 4 inches and there were a few reports of damage from fallen trees.. FLOODING also occurred both in Ontario and Quebec,, cutting off a number of isolated villages in Quebec, particularly in the Cote-Nord region.

Although Hurricane Katrina made it’s ULTIMATE landfall well to the west,, Alabama and the Florida Pamhandle were both affected by tropical-storm force winds and a storm surge varying from 12 to 16 ft. around Mobile Bay with higher waves on top.. Sustained winds of 67 mph were recorded in Mobile,, Alabama,, and the storm surge there was approximately 12 feet.. The surge caused significant FLOODING several miles inland along Mobile Bay..Four tornadoes were also reported in Alabama.. Ships,, oil rigs,, boats and fishing piers were ALL washed ashore along Mobile Bay: the cargo ship M/V Caribbean Clipper and many fishing boats were grounded at Bayou La Batre..

Hurricane Katrina FIRST made landfall on April 25,, 2005 in SOUTH FLORIDA where it hit as a Category 1 hurricane,, with 80 mph winds.. Rainfall was heavy in places and exceeded 14 inches in Homestead Florida and a Storm Surge of 3 – 5 feet was measured in parts of Monroe County.. More than 1 million customers were left without electricity, and damage in Florida was estimated at between 1 and 2 billion dollars, with most of the damage coming from FLOODING and overturned trees. There were 14 FATALITIES reported in Florida as a result of Hurricane Katrina.

Katrina then caused severe destruction across the entire Mississippi Gulf coast and into Alabama,, as far as 100 miles from the storm's center as it FINALLY came ashore at the Louisiana/Mississippi state line..

The STORM SURGE and subsequent FLOODING caused severe damage along the Gulf Coast, DEVASTATING the Mississippi cities of Waveland,, Bay St. Louis,, Pass Christian,, Long Beach,, Gulfport,, Biloxi,, D’Iberville,, Ocean Springs,, Gautier,, Moss Point and Pasgagoula…

At least 1,836 people lost their lives in Hurricane Katrina and in the subsequent FLOODS,, making it the deadliest U.S. hurricane since the 1928 Okeechobee Hurricane..

The storm is estimated to have been responsible for $81.2 billion (2005 U.S. Dollars) in damage, making it the costliest natural disaster in U.S.History..

In Contrast, Levee breaches,, MORE so then the Hurricane itself,, in New Orleans caused a Considerable loss of life but by FAR Not the MAJORITY of the lives lost.... OF the 1836 total dead as a result of the Hurricane,, 700 bodies were recovered in New Orleans.. Slightly more than HALF of the bodies were found in the city’s poorer neighborhoods, with the REMAINDER scattered throughout middle-class and even some richer districts…So,, OF the Total killed by Katrina,, ONLY a little more then 350 of them can PRESUMABLY,, but NOT Necessarrilly,, be identified as Poor Blacks from the now INFAMOUS section Known as the 9th Ward..

A little more then 350 out of 700 IN new Orleans and 1836 TOTAL dead as a result of Katrina and it’s effects..

YET,, when you ask the average person,,"What do YOU think of when you hear the name,, Ketrina??" the Image MOST likely to come to MOST minds is that of the Flooding of New Orleans,, MOSTLY in the Black Sections ONLY,, the some 10,000 ESTIMATED refugees at the Superdome of which only SIX Died by NON-KATRINA-DIRECTLY RELATED causes or of those at the Convention Center, where ONLY four bodies were recovered. ALL were from "Natural Causes" except ONE..That ONE is believed to be the result of a homicide..

( a SUICIDE by OVERDOSE )

ALL this out of a New Orleans population estimated to be in excess of 750,000 residents of which MOST evacuated when THEY WERE TOLD TO.... ( Bear in mind that New Orleans was more then 50% Black Prior to Katrina so apparently there were appoximately some 350,000 Blacks who SOMEHOW managed to evacuate too)..

SO,, I ASK again..WHY is Hurricane KATRINA Most commonly known as a New Orleans’s BLACK-ONLY Catastrophy???

In MY opinion this is the case because of a RACIST,, EXPLOITIVE and SENSATIONALIZED News Coverage by an MSM that was SHAMELESS in it’s POLITICAL MOTIVATION…

The SAME MSM that,, without the SLIGHTEST evidence to back up it's claim,, reported some 10,000 dead bodies floating IN New Orleans..

The SAME MSM that IGNORED and/or DOWNPLAYED the responsibility and FAILURE of LOCAL DEMOCRAT Governments,, in POWER for some 60 years or better,, to handle this situation that THEY Knew was a possibility going back at least to 1965 and reflected in the words of the Mayor of New Orleans,,Ray Nagin,, when HE said,,"THIS is the Storm we've ALL been fearing ",,,

THE MSM had that chance and saw instead,,a chance to DEMONIZE a Republican Administration with it's highly selective and targeted reporting..

So WHY??

WHY do people think that Katrina was a Black-Only disaster??

People BELIEVE that because THAT is ALL that they’ve heard from DAY ONE…..

was the costliest and one of the five deadliest Hurricanes in the history of the United States..

because thats what the media showed on TV were the Black communities.

Here is the reason why the media can be a bit dangerous. Because a people's perception about a certain group of people are derived from the media. Unless you personally are friends with someone from lets say another race, background, or sex, people mostly learn from what they see in the media. so if the media shows bad stuff about a group of Americans then that is what people watching are going to think.
Plus the media first started this racial flame by first saying that these AMERICANS were REFUGEES!! How silly is that?

At least FOX sometimes gets it right.

April 25-August 30? Did it really continue this long, or am I reading more in to this? I do however understand what you are talking about.

People knew this would happen. Can't understand why they couldn't or wouldn't leave New Orleans. I know a home is special, but a life is much more precious than a home will ever be.

AF..YOU are ENTIRELY correct and THAT'S why I mentioned that some 350,000 Black Americans in New Orleans were NOT foolish enough to "Sit and Wait" for the Government to save them..THIS business of portraying Blacks,, as a PEOPLE,, as being unable to fend for themselves and worthy of ONLY being viewed as victims is something I have LONG argued against..You know,, I saw a LOT of what looked like perfectly usuable Vehicles sitting in those floods..NOT to mention the Buses..

But you KNOW,,

THAT was my WHOLE point in posting this..Given the widespread nature of Ketrina and the Tens of Millions of people effected by this Hurricane with a goodly percentage of those being Black,,WHY ALL the Focus on THIS SELECTED Few??

AGAIN I say,,,POLITICS….

Gammies..I can’t answer you..There have ALWAYS been those who have refused to move out of the way of these things..Hell,,There are SOME who EVEN hold Hurricane Parties..

MANY remember the Predictions that didn’t come true and base their decisions on THAT..MANY just see it as some kind of an adventure..WHO KNOWS???LMAO..

Kinda Funny How the same People claim that Bush Cant do anything at all for the people of this country, and how useless his term in office has been. But when they talk about Katrina...it was Bush's fault...cant do anything...but he controls the weather now...This was covered by the same media who shows us nothing but the bad coming out of Iraq...Maybe the News shows should have just got there Katrina Coverage from spike lee's B.S. documentary. No these people are not looting, they are doing what they need to do to survive...Kinda funny that less than 5% of all the stuff looted from stores had nothing to do with survival, unless nike makes a first aid kit...or the japanese have invented a plasma Life raft...I was really pleased to see the hero awards tonight, it was nice to see people honored for doing good, and not see the scum of society get their 15 minutes of fame for murder, rape, theft etc.

The "gangs " that roamed the streets shooting at everything and anything were Myths and the ONLY people that I saw doing any looting were POLICE officers...
Not to say that there WEREN'T such things going on,,there ALWAYS are but the neighbors helping each other,, the people themselves saving lives,,THAT was ALSO going on..
People were helping people that they didn't even KNOW..

But,,, THAT doesn't fit the Stereotype that the MSM wanted to project..

It's like the Towers..Out of 3000 families they put the SAME four "Jersey Girls" in front of the Camera for MONTHS..HERE,, they ONLY put the examples out there of the type of MAYHEM and Chaos that they WANTED everybody to BELIEVE was widespread..

Its called "spin" and the media will ALWAYS use the one that draws the highest ratings. It has nothing to do with the truth or reality it has everything to do with bottom line profits. People are looked at as a commodity by the media they have no room for compassion, dignity, respect or empathy. If they did they couldn't stuff the mic in the face of some woman or man who just lost a child and ask "how do you feel". And of course Hawk the stuck those same girls in front of the Camera because they were willing to play the PUPPET for their 15 minutes of fame.

Many of the Katrina folks we saw day after day from New Orleans have had the goverment taking care of them since before they were born. What makes for better TV? Normal people from Miss/Ala/Bayou starting to clean up or thousands of urban/ghetto types trying to seek refuge in the Super Dome? Great for ratings watching people getting plucked from rooftops.

should have left them on the roof tops. if they weren't smart enough to leave when told to, then no loss to society if they don't survive. it's called the POSSUM SYNDROME, that's why you see more possum roadkill than any other animal. they are sooo stuupid! if it wasn't for the fact that they breed so fast they'd be extinct. remind you of any segment of society?LOL

This was made a black thing because a large segment of those hit the hardest were black. By hit the hardest I'm talking not only about the hurricane but economically as well.

They could not bounce back from the devastation that they endured. These were blacks with small business' or who owned there homes who had everything stripped from them. Many of them had no means of leaving the city if they had wanted too.
As for most of the white people, they were in a situation where they had enough to get back on their feet and restart their lives. The blacks were not so lucky in this regard.

They were not, as many want to say, all on welfare siphoning government money. that is so ignorant to say that it boggles my mind. That is the racism that permeates this country, the stereotype that because you're poor you're on welfare. Those on welfare were not affected as badly as those who were poor, those lower to lower middle class workers lost everything.

I agree stop making it a black thing but at the same time understand why they focused on primarily black people. Then think of what it would be like if you lost everything and had nothing to rebuild your life with after working so hard for what you did have.

I would say that your post is not representing the statistics on blacks who died accurately. You're operating on the assumption that of the remainder, after you seperate your 350 blacks, are all white. That is probably not true since 40% of the population in Rural Louisiana are black if I recall. Also there are a large population of blacks in the middle class of New Orleans and across the state. I think I would logically assume that of remaining portion of your statistic for those who died, at least 40% of those are blacks, bringing the total up to around 900 to 1000 of the people who died being a African-American decent. I may be wrong but statistically it seems sound.

Hey..AF..YOU reading this Liberal BS???

Apparently ..he CAN’T raed..I heven’t seen this kind of Propagandized,, Stereotypical RACISM since the Katrina Coverage itself,, orat least the last mention of it by the MSM and the Democrats.... Just goes to show how SUCCESSFUL the Propaganda Machine really is..

As my numbers CLEARLY spelled out, some 350,000 BLACKS,,,B.L.A.C.K.S,,, African Americans,, managed to evacuate when they were told to..

We won’t EVEN get into a point by point discussion on your rant or your RACIST Stereotyped opinions of the American Black’s Lot in America Today..

Suffice it to say that your assumptions are as insulting as they are WRONG…

Are you SERIOUSLY trying to say that ONLY Blacks Lost everything??
That a Black that lost everything is SOMEHOW different then a white who lost everything??

And your comment about Black Economics..PURE BS..If one is to take YOUR stand that Blacks had FAR too little to begin with it only STANDS to reason that they ALSO LOST VERY LITTLE…
You CAN’T have it BOTH ways..

WE won’t even get into your outrageous assumptions of the Death Toll..

The WHOLE point of this post is that the effects were WIDESPREAD and did NOT center around a certain Group of people based on race in ONE particular city ..

Something that seems to be all too difficult for YOU to comprehend or as I suspect MORE likely,, Something that simply doesn’t FIT into your Racist Mold and therefore something to be REJECTED out of hand..

But I THANK you for your comments,, if ONLY because they PROVE the WHOLE Premise of my Post which inte

interrestingly enough but NOT surprising in the LEAST,, MANAGE to be COMPLETELY beyond your ability to Comprehend…

BTW..The Numbers that YOU question and so blithly dismiss were RESEARCHED and are as accurate as are available..
