A new law on the books in the state of New Jersey bans some sex offenders from using the Internet.

Convicted sex offenders who used the Internet to commit their crimes will face restrictions on using the web. If they get caught  the offender could face a $10,000 fine and a year and a half in prison.

We want to know what you think: Good idea? Bad idea? Can it be enforced? Should the law be considered here in Florida?

Good idea and totally enforceable! I mean if your ISP can access your computer and fix it with the nod of your head, then "watch dogs" should definitely be able to watch the sex offenders!

Why not send those sexual offenders to a deserted island somewhere? Preferably one of those islands where they test nuclear weapons! =)

LOL, Brenda~

Yeah lets take the internet away from the offenders, heck they all end up moving to Florida anyways... ;o)

As long as you have My Space the pedophiles will have a place to congergate. Sounds like a good thing for NJ.

I am just saying that a pedophile's internet usage should be restricted, just as their living arrangements, etc. are restricted. There are a lot of things on the web that would not be healthy for a pedophile to have access to.

Put em all on CONDEMNED ISLAND! Then the CONVICTED sex offenders will have no more contact with your children nor will they be wasting any more taxpayer dollars to support them while they sit in prison. And like I called it about CONDEMNED ISLAND before, take em there and drop em off to die, with no luxuries at all, no food and one change of clothes. Sorry, I have no pity! Once an offender, always an offender! Take them out of society completely. With no phones or anything. I get so sick of hearing about a sex offender going to prison, because it's yours and mine tax money supporting them while your child is screwed up in the head for being sexually offended. Then spread the word around that any person that sexually offends a child is going to CONDEMNED ISLAND. Maybe that will control some of the prison overcrowding and take the murderers there to and drop them off.

When they started lifetime monitoring of sex offenders, I knew 3 men whose only crime was to trust the bar to check id's. The girls they picked up were underage and they were convicted. They were good hard workers, single, who were lied to by the girls. They now have to check in with police every time they move and they have a very hard time getting work.

There was a grandmother who was accused of pedophelia because she sent the picture of her grandchild in a bathtub to a friend and someone else got it.
There are many cases of girls accusing men of rape because of an argument.
First thing the police do is protect the child, which they should do, but the media comes in and calls the accused guilty before they know the facts. the accused then has to prove his innocence.

Someone can send you a picture of a naked child in the e-mail. When you open it, it gets stored in a database at your IP.
Prove you didn't want it.

zbert has some very good points. I totally despise pediphiles and other similar sexual offenses, but there are some sexual offenses that get the same treatment as a pediphile, when the crime is nothing more than peeing at a playground in the middle of the night.

It's not a world of absolutes. Sure, some sexual offenders may need to be banned from the internet, but then how do you control what parts of the internet, and determine which sexual offenses. It would be a very difficult task to enforce any type of internet banment for anybody, unles that person were locked up behind bars.

Banning someone from the internet would be like banning someone from reading a newspaper, or sending a letter in the mail. Should a rapist really be banned from the internet, when their crime had nothing to do with the internet?

I think our laws and punishments are starting to get way out of proportion. There are many many different types of sexual offenses and we need to treat each type individually, not as a whole. Not to mention, when a murderer has completed his punishment, other than the felony murder record (which is bad enough) he's done. But a sexual offender is punished for life, even after they've done their time behind bars. If we are goinng to treat them as criminals forever, then why even let them out of prison to begin with.
