Silly. Sorry buddy. The name "Football" must not necessarily indicate a game where ONLY the feet (and occasionally the head and in the case of a goalie - hands) are used; see, both Football games allow other kinds of contact. The American game of Football is called "Football" because A) The ball is designed to be kicked ... it can be thrown with special skills but it's shaped to be kicked in the air, B) The game begins with a kick-off, C) Change of sides usually occurs with a kick, D) Second Half begins with a kick-off, E) a major and dramatic scoring technique occurs with a kick, F) the only other major scoring technique is 99.99999% of the time concluded with a kick (so all major scoring involves kicks), not to mention drop kicks, onside kicks, and more kicking.

You can also throw and carry the ball, but the entire flow of the game and its major (and many minor) elements depend upon foot-on-ball contact. For that reason (which is good enough) and because the use of the foot in this game is relatively unique amongst American sports, the focus is the foot-on-ball contact and so the game is called "Football". It's every bit as appropriate to call it that as it is to call the other sport in question "Football".

Thanks buddy. I think both sports are great traditions. They DO have an unfortunate (but entertaining) naming conflict. I would love to lift a pint to Manchester United Football Club in a London pub some day.
