Ten Chicago high schools are launching a program that allows students to anonymously text-message police if they see a gun or overhear plans about a fight after school. Students who report a potential crime also have an incentive to use the service - they are eligible for a $1,000 reward if the information they provide results in an arrest.

We want to know what you think. Should schools in our area consider a program like this one?

Why not. If it works and helps stop the problems from starting then go for it.

The police department would have to win the lottery in order to keep up with the reward pay outs. I say go for it.

Absolutely a plan like this needs to be looked at locally.

Seems like a win-win for everyone, although I think $1,000 for a fight after school is a bit much!

Crime for FALSE REPORTING ????

Lets see, why would a kid lie about anything.

Most definitely. A lot of SMS programs are not costly. Students shouldn't be allowed to talk and/or text on their phones during class..but its a quick, silent, and anonymous way to alert the police if they can send text messages when necessary. I think its a wonderful idea!

Okay...I think WALLYGATOR-FL has finally lost their mind...really.

I think it's a good idea, however because the schools don't allow cell phones, they'd have to wait until after school and after school could be too late.
