Less than a month after polar bears became a threatened species, the Bush administration decides to give oil companies permission to explore what's left of their home. Companies are going to start exploring in the Chukchi Sea. Numbers show about 2,000 polar bears live in the region. So who comes first our furry friends or the oil companies?

Man can coexsist with the animals and still drill for oil if certain guidelines are followed.

They say insanity is defined as doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results. It's long been obvious petroleum is running out and there's no future in it. Yet the Bush administration repeated refuses to pay anything but lip service for research into alternative fuel development, something we ought to have been investing deeply long ago. We need to get on the ball and develop and convert to new eco-friendly fuels, not desperately chasing after dwindling supplies of an old one.

I didn't realize oil exploration killed polar bears. Now I know why there aren't any in Saudi Arabia.

Captain Jim, that was great. I love it LOL
And yes, we can coexist with the wildlife.
go for it!!! Hey, if they want to put an oil well in my back yard, have at it. I'll live around it.

Very true sensiblejoe, it is way past time to investigate different fuel sources. I think it more of a situation that the big oil companies have their hands to deep into the pockets of the government for them to want to do anything. (payoffs or kickbacks)

Ive read they are on the threated species list, because of a prediction. The prediction is arctic ice is supposed to decrease by mid century.

Hunting by the Inuit and exploration in northern Canada hasn't had a significant effect on their numbers. But I guess real world numbers aren't as important as predictions.

Well if the polar bears are starving, we can feed them the greenpeace and other fanatics around there.

Drilling the oil isnt killing the bears.

According to the Orlando Sentinel on 6/15/08 the sale of the leases to the oil companies occurred before the bear was classified as threatened in May. The same article said, “According to the Fish and Wildlife Service, there is no evidence of a polar bear being killed by oil and gas activities in Alaska since 1993 . . . . . And since 1960, when the hunt for oil and gas began in Alaska, only two fatalities of polar bears have been linked to oil and gas activities in the state, the service said.

We need more oil exploration and drilling in the US if Americans wish to survive. If we become completely dependent on oil from other countries then we will become a second or third world nation. If the farmers wish to make more money they will convert all the food crops to corn so they can sell it for ethanol, where will we get our food from then? We do need to develop alternative fuel but not at the expense of food shortages and being under control by another nation. You say it won’t happen, if we continue the way we are now it will. May not be tomorrow but it will happen.

The whole article this is based on is from the AP. Typical liberal clap trap. Only 2 deaths of polar bear have been attributed to oil/gas exploration since 1960. I guess since there are so many more now than then (20,000 more than in 1972) it 'could' happen. Unless people really think they can ride their dream catchers to work, we need to drill drill drill while focusing our country's efforts on alternative fuel sources much like we did the space program in the 60s. We have enough brain power in this country to do it. Let's get going.

Eric is right, we don't have to make a choice between the two. The polar bears are naturally
curious, mainly because they would love to EAT
the men they see. When things get too busy, or too noisy for them they'll move on. Good Gracious! That's some BIIIGGGG territory up there, more than enough room for oil drilling and polar bears, too!
LOL, CaptainJim, How about you take a few shark fishin'? I hear they can't/ don't swim!
I'll even go along, and bring my boots, just so I can give them a little "thump" on their backsides!
ADeltonian, now THAT is a novel idea!
Riversxing, 10-4! The polar bears will be fine!

I just knew there was a reason, there is always a reason behind everything and they are very good about making it look all innocent! I don't trust none of them! You know even if they do find anything and start drilling, it will not lower the price of gas!

. Bla Bla Bla ...for all you idiots who still believe that the polar bear is losing its habitat because of man I will remind you that we have IN FACT found a thickening and widening of the ice shelf at both poles ! We actually have 15 square miles MORE ice this year than we had last year ...if you love the stupid bears more than you love eating and living inside a house then go up there and move the stupid things to the other side of Alaska where the Ice is forming (just like it has been doing slowly for over 5000 year now!)

Besides President Bush has “authorized” drilling and exploration in the past and congress has blocked it every time why would I think they would give up on their 8 year plan now ? All we will ever be able to do is wonder what impact 5 million barrels a day oil production in Florida would have been having right now ..IF the Kennedy's had not used a judge to block it 6 years ago.....

Polar bears are no friends of mine, or anyone. I'd like to see someone walk up and try to pet one.

Anyway, I don't see how they can't co-exist. I'm all for alternate sources of energy, but we're not ready to switch over completely yet. Its going to take time, a very long time. There's no reason why we can't use what we have *while* we're still improving our alternate energy sources.

Seems to me that too many people are under the impression that our current sources being restricted are a good thing, as they believe that it will give more incentive to use "alternate" sources of energy. I should know. I used to believe this back in my liberal days.

Side note: People complained that the current oil pipelines (before they were built) would interfere with the caribou population in Alaska. They were right, but not in the way they expected. Turns out the caribou enjoyed the warmth the pipes provided, and made them a little more "frisky" than usual. The population of the caribou went up. A lot.

...look the fact is that the bears do not have to die for us to get the oil out of this region of OUR country BUT if you tree-hugging liberals continue to use them as your excuse for sabotaging our economy to win votes from stupid people ...someone a lot like me is going to drive up there and plug every last one of them to remove that “problem” once and for all !

Good point JD I had forgotten that we are now having to feed and “cull” the caribou population around the pipeline....far be it for tree hugger to look aback on the reality of a situation !
As far as a lot of people wanting things the way they are , you know what is really up as well as I do ...if the democrats get what they want in November then they will let go and somehow not notice as the drilling starts in Alaska and Florida ...and by “not notice” I mean stop using tricks to stop the development of US oil (in 2001 as a minority in the house and senate they used filibusters to stall for time and HURT us all , now as a majority Nancy simply “tables” any bill/discussion until after November)

They don't have polar bears in the Gulf of Mexico, save the bears , drill here ! The polar bears are threatened by the time of the season that the ocean's surface freezes and they can finally hunt seals. During the summer they fast and live off of fat reserves before returning back to the ice. The weather and not drilling is their main threat. Our main threat is TWO FLORIDA SENATORS, they need to be retired !

..retired , fired from a cannon , feed them to hungry bears ...something like that would be a good place for those two to wind up ! Or we could send them back where they came from outer space and Cuba !

Well I am torn, I do care about the bears however, our gas prices are at $4.00 a gallon. When is someone in the government going to start allowing drilling off the coast of FL, Alaska, etc so we can stop relying on other countries for our oil and gas.

What is funny is that Obama is strongly against drilling for oil in ANWAR but he has not commented on the drilling for Natural Gas in the same location that IS moving forward ...is this another Reverend Wright thing where he just did not notice ?
And yes I saw McCain is half/right in his position on this one as of today ...he is for drilling in the gulf and off shore (east shore of Florida that is) but against drilling in Alaska ...come on guys fact is drilling in this country is so clean we can put up wild life refuges on pump cites and never have a problem ! We really can have oil and bears to.

"Polar bears are no friends of mine, or anyone. I'd like to see someone walk up and try to pet one."

They're still a very important part of the ecosystem. It's truly amazing the lax attitude that some of you have toward a species that
would have grave effects on your own food supply if eliminated, especially at your local Red Lobster. No, I don't think oil
exploration is killing them but, then again...it can't be helping. Man still
hasn't learned to live in harmony with the
land and will destroy anything it takes
to make a profit. If this makes me a tree
hugger, then put a set of lips on those bad
boys and I'll give them a big smooch!

I guess all the Polar Bears are good for is cute animations on your Coke commercials during Christmas, huh?

O yea real important if we did not have polar bears we would ...what? Be over run by penguins ? Yes I was kidding about killing them all BUT idiots like you you want to pretend that anything WE (The USA and or “man”) is harmful are just string puppets to the oil cartel ! Have you ever even been to an oil pumping station ? Do you have any idea how many of them there are all over Texas and California ? No because if you had ever seen one you would no be so fast to repeat the LIE that oil destroys nature ! In fact an oil pumping station once built is less destructive to the environment than a solar power plant !! Go check it out tree hugger !
