So... in Volusia County you're charged 5 bucks to drive your car onto the beach.  They are called toll booths.  Volusia has them on 18 of 31 ramps to the beach.

The county expects to collect about 2 million bucks from tolls this year.  It costs the county 12 million to run the beach.

Here's my question -- a citizens committe group wants the county to eliminate the tolls to attract more people to the beach... but the county commission says they NEED the 2 million generated.

What do you think?  And do the tolls keep you from coming to the beacH?

It will cost me just shy of a million dollars just in gas money so a lousy 5 bucks will not keep me away. Me in a Spiedo might just keep some of the beachgoers away though!

...not for nothing but it does violate federal law , the beaches are considered “national property” and every one is guarantied access to them (same as JFK space center) but no one is willing to fight the government directly on anything like this.

O yea and the idea that any “government” needs to maintain a beach is absurd ! God does all the real work , and he does it for FREE !

I go to the beach and park in the public parking area and walk to the beach.

I live in Cocoa beach, we are not allowed to drive on the beach, so we drive up and pay the fee so we can drive on the beach. Come here and see how much you have to pay to even get near the beach.. Cocoa Beach has meters everywhere, the Cocoa Beach Pier charges you a higher fee to park in the lot, even though your spending money there, Jetty park charges you a fee. But the City of Cape Canaveral doesn't have any of this nonsense of charging you to go to the beach. Its a first come first serve for the parking spaces.

All this over five bucks?? Hell, most of you have no problem throwing that down for the "redneck staples"...a six of Natty Lite or a couple of packs Basic brand smokes. (LOL) No law is being violated Einstein, Federal or otherwise. No law ANYWHERE states you have a RIGHT to drive onto a beach. As with most things in life, you have a choice. Don't wish to pay?? Park elsewhere and walk.
