It is ignorant and frankly they make themselves look foolish by doing so. The kids that are brainwashed by their parents at the schools are the worst offenders.

We adopted a 2 1/2 year old boy that was born in the United States but his father was from the Dominican. Long story short, it seems when we grocery shop that hispanics think he speaks spanish even though we (his parents) are white. They walk up to him and start speaking spanish and he looks at them like they are from another planet. I normally will jump in and tell them "thats okay we already have someone to mow our lawn". Of course this usually will offend them and they will normally tell me how I have offended them. I throw it right back at them since WE LIVE IN AMERICA and they started it all by speaking another language and offended me, my wife and my child!!!!

It is usually pretty good entertainment....anyone wanna go grocery shopping with me sometime??

This is fine in a spanish speaking country.
It is rude to speak a foreign language which excludes others in a work setting.

No problem really... Actually I'm jealous to not be fluent in more than one language. Funny thing, my blonde hair/blue eye wife speaks 5 different languages, and she usually lets them continue on until she is ready to leave, or needs to interject, and engages them in the language they are speaking.... That usually squashes it in the future...

If it upsets you, do not patronise the business in the future.

It would not bother me unless it interfered with their customer sevice to ME.

Sorry, but this IS AMERICA and ENGLISH is what we speak, learn, read and write here OR DID until some dimwitted moron of a politician thought it was a great idea to start putting street signs, books such as our Driver handbook into Spanish, which I may get blasted for this, but to me, these changes SHOULD NEVER have happened!

Do you believe for one minute if we go to a Spanish speaking country they will put their signs, books, etc. into ENGLISH for those of us that DON'T SPEAK their language? NO, it's not going to happen, so why are we doing it?

Sp yes, I find it nopt only rude, but offensive as well.

Toddt, I'd love to go grocery or do any type of shopping with you! We could have some great laughs, many people think my wife is Spanish, SHE IS NOT, but she gets the same thing as your son, my wife has black hair and brown eyes, so a lot of the Spanish folk think she is one of them, she doesn't speak Spanish and she's a 6th generation Floridian!

p.s. what you speak in your own home is fine, just NOT in PUBLIC!

Good points Native!

Not for nothing but if I moved to France and suddenly everything was in French and English to me it would be insulting. It is like saying YOU ARE TOO STUPID AND LAZY to speak our language so we will get down to your level. It isn't helping. It is hurting.

Doesn't Florida have the English only law? By George it does. It was passed by the state Legislator back in 1988. Why doesn't the state enforce laws that they pass. It's this political correctness crap, afraid of offending some country or someone and quite frankly, it's gotten way out of hand.

toddt, that is hilarious!! ("We already have someone to mow our lawn"). I usually get the opposite of your son and Native's wife. I don't look like I speak Spanish. It's great fun when someone starts talking about me in Spanish and I turn around and blast them.

If it's ENGLISH speaking employees, then it's rude for them to speak Spanish. I often have residents who do NOT speak English and so I must speak to them in Spanish.

We live in an English speaking country. Those who speak another language in the workplace or anywhere in public are rude, arrogant and stupid. When I hear someone speaking Spanish in the workplace, I view it as intimidating because they are probably saying something they don't want me to hear.

Why would one dislike people speaking Spanish in the same room and be ok with the Chinese speaking Chinese in the restaurant you're eating at, right in front of you? What about the French language heavily spoken in New Orleans? What about all of the different languages spoken throughout the US? I am really surprised at this station for advocating more hatred against the Spanish people and their language when it should have been noted just "People who don't speak English." The Spanish individuals are not the only ones that do this. Why is it when there is a different language spoken, people feel guilty, and feel all of a sudden that someone is talking about them? What do we have to feel guilty about? Someone above stated something about enforcing the English Law, that's fine with me, but if you're going to ask for that, then ask to enforce a law that is more important such as why doesn't Texas enforce the law against Polygamy, just turn their heads, and allow all of the Children to go back to being abused? It's a felony in the State of Texas to have sex with under age children, why weren't these people arrested since this over whelming evidence was found, why is this law that is more important, not being enforced? These laws should be more important to enforce for the protection of the children involved. Do we seriously think speaking English over Spanish or any other language for that matter, is a law more important to cry over to enforce? I don't think so! There's more important things to worry about in the World right now than to worry about if the person next t

to you speaks English or not. If we don't like it, we have three choices, sit there and stew about, get up and walk out, and/or learn a new language. Shame on you Fox for asking such a bias question such as this pointing out the Spanish language only.

That is a good point Robin. However, it is kinda rude to speak in your native tongue in front of someone who doesnt understand it. BUT on the other hand, maybe we Americans should learn to speak other languages other than English. I dont like to be left out and not knowing what others are talking about.. i am nosey like that. The Spanish, the Asians and others got it over us. They are bilingual and some know more than two languages.

YBSRobin read my blog

I agree with you afelton, I just wanted to state that it's not only Spanish, it's everyone who speaks more than one language that do this, and we don't seem to have a problem with it until someone brings up Spanish. And more than half the time when people do this, it's unintentional. I can only shake my head, if anything with what's going on in the World right now, should we be more angry when the people from the Middle East speak their language in front of us instead of English? So why is it people only make reference to just the Spanish? I've gone into many Middle Eastern owned gas stations around Central Florida, and find myself patiently waiting for their conversation in their native tongue to end before conducting my English based business at hand, yes I can walk out or not go back, but if they are nice people, they are nice people, I am a grown up, I deal with it. My family goes to one particular Chinese Restaurant, they know us well, speak to us in English and when we ask about something or one of their family, they will in turn ask that individual in their native language, does that offend me, no, why should it? We do go to New Orleans on vacation and we get an attitude from some of the locals who speak French, will that stop us from having fun, no. Basically that's my point, why point out the Spanish only if it were not intended to be a biased question! Diversity and culture is what the US is made up of. If we don't like it, use our Freedom and walk away from it!

I have to drill my employees that it is unprofessional and very disrespectful to speak Spanish at the work place especially within hearing of non Spanish speaking individuals they can feel free to speak Spanish at home or any other place they want. NOT AT WORK
English is and should remain our #1 language
It seems that it is always a race Issue when people do not get what they want!
LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT (THEY CAN ALWAYS GO BACK TO THEIR NATIVE LANDS)

If I went to live in another country, it would be extremely rude and ignorant to not respect their language and customs, especially in public. This is AMERICA--please respect us and speak ENGLISH.

To gain Citizenship to the United States You MUST "READ, WRITE, AND SPEAK CONVERSATIONAL ENGLISH" we need to enforce the laws that are on the books, unless translating for a customer there is no need to speak spanish at work, and should never be allowed in a government offices at all, unless deportation is involved.
Personally I do not do any business with anyone who does not speak english.

First of all that is Texas and this is Florida and Florida DID pass an ENGLISH is the offical language of the state law 1988. Speaking Spanish or any language other than English in the work place (unless it is a business that caters strictly to one section of the population and does not deal with anyone other that that) is unprofessional and rude. Many times I have seen customers left waiting because the "spanish" (and yes it is mostly the spanish that do this) conversation was more important. They should be fired on the spot no questions asked.

Second (and this is going to be a very unpopular comment I fear) as for the Polygamy situation in Texas and the failure to procecute, it my just have something to do with it being a "religious" belief. Funny how that whole "religion" thing works huh, kinda like the priests that were not charged with a criminal offense for having sex with alter boys. But then you know those "believer" types, its all ok if it is done for the sake of what we believe.
