Under federal tax law, nonprofits such as churches are prohibited from endorsing or opposing political candidates. The Internal Revenue Service has ruled that the forbidden partisan activity includes speech from the pulpit that indicates the church favors a particular candidate.

Do you have a problem with churches allowing presidential candidates to stop by and say a few words during Sunday service?

Agree with Truthguys. The Dems have been going to black churches and lying to them for years, yet no one ever says anything about it.

I still can see Sen.Kerry standing with Edwards in black churches and passing the plate!

I remember Clinton and his references to chruches burning!

Truthguys, you hit it right on the head. I see a real double standard.

Yes. Worship is church is about drawing near to God, not showcasing earthly celebrities or pushing worldly politics. Churches that engage in such covert politicking do a disservice to Christianity. The explanation of Pastor James of Orlando's First Baptist Church rings hollow: my church prays for all civil authorities and armed forces at *every* service, yet never allows them to take the pulpit, which is reserved for proclamation of God's, and not man's, word.

Churches are political entities, anyways, except they have tax exemptions, and undeclared revenue. As a christian, organized religion sickens me...most operate in direct contradiction of the gospel they proclaim to preach

While no non-profit can endorse, it still amazes me that UNIONS endorse candidates. They are non-profit, yet seem to be exempt from the law.

As far as candidates going to churches. Nothing wrong with it.

As far as churches endorsing. Absolutely NOT. But that law does not forbid a pastor from individually endorsing a candidate, and if a pastor endorses a candidate, that is fine with me, just don't tell your church how to vote.

I see a number of good points by posters on this one ...fact is very few 501C3 tax exempt organizations do not violate this rule , but the IRS does not actually have the authority to make this “rule” in the first place and when we try to apply it to church we have a true conflict with the actual intent of the line in the constitution guarantying a separation of church and state.
On the one hand I would love to see an END to the media giving free air time to Hillary , Obama and John Kerry as they speak in front of the congregation at their churches I also must admit that this “law/rule” is unconstitutional and will not stand up in court if and when it is challenged.
