I was out near Astatula yesterday, when I saw an Orange County Code Enforcement truck drive by.  I am pretty sure Astatula is in Lake county.

I was outraged when I saw this, as I was pretty sure it was someone driving home (around 530PM)  Why should we as taxpayers pay to allow these county employees to drive back and forth from home... especially if the don't live in te county?  How much money in gas, tolls, and vehicle maintenance is wasted each year for this perk?

I think Fox should look into this!!!!!!

Tisk, tisk....

You where Outraged??? Lets see Most central florida counties allow employees to drive a MARKED or UNMARKED CAR home as long as its under 30 miles from the county line..

Are you ready for THIS? Are You really READY?
The officers have to pay out of their pay check, what the tax payers would pay to drive the vehicle home.. So in essence you (the tax payer) IS NOT really paying for it.. Isn't that a SHOCKER??

Sorry for being a smart butt, but I get sick of hearing this complaint. Most cities and counties have inacted this employee pay policy for the last 4 yrs at least

There are exceptions to the 30 mile rule, but it costs the officer more.. I hope you not OUTRAGED now.... ;o)

I know these taxpayers think they pay for everything in sight. There is this certain group of people that do nothing but complain that they are a taxpayer. I'm glad I'm not a taxpayer......lol. If your going to complain make sure it's really your tax dollars being used.

Hey signal I am not being a wise guy here but so far this month alone just for gas I have spent 225.00. How much do they take out of your paychecks to pay for gas, maintenance, and such? Just curious

I think you can claim about .30 cents per mile on your taxes. Maybe they should calculate the deductions in pay the same way?

There is too many people taking these cars home.
Yes some of them have to pay a fee for use of it and to be able to take it home, but this still does not make up for the escessive fuel and wear on the vehicles.

As for the cide enforcement officers, What the heck are they thinking? We have them here in Deltona driving around in massive Ford F250's and F150's. Why? They are never hauling anything. Let them drive around in a Prius or something fuel efficiant instead.

I dont think anyone should be allowed to drive a vehicle home at all. Make it fair to all. NO ONE AT ALL.

What I mean is when they clock out they log in the miles and when they clock in they log in the miles and then deduct .30 cents per mile on the difference. Could you imagine having to pay 3.00 for every ten miles they drove extra?

Lets say they stick to the under 30 mile from the county line rule. Unless the station is located on the line I would say a conservative 80 miles per day round trip. Now this person works 5 days a week that comes to 400 miles per week multiply that by 4 weeks and we get 1600 miles. Now are you ready to be outraged? That comes to a whopping $480.00 per month. Are they really having that much deducted from their checks? Or is it a token amount just to appease the outraged public.

I can tell you this, every morning I see an Indian River County deputy sheriff heading North on US1 into Melbourne. Where He goes after that I dont know but I do know it is about twenty miles one way from the county line to Melbourne

AC_Cages~ A Prius would cost the TAXPAYERS $22k for each car. A F150 costs $15k each with the smallest fuel efficent v-8. that gets 300 miles to a tank.

Quick everyone run around in a circle and chant police state....

You watch things may be changing for the worse
real soon. Its a proven fact that a marked car does deter crime in a neighborhood even if its from another agency..

Signal.. I have no issue with Cops taking they're cars home... they can respond to any emergency, and should not have to respond in their personal vehicle. I am pretty sure there will never be a code enforcement crisis (I don't think they are even 24 hours) Anyone who might have to respond directly from home... police, fire, dog catcher... etc. makes sense to me.

I talked to a friend of mine that works for the county, and they informed me that not only do they not pay, the get something like 2-3 dollars a day extra... so, I am not sure what the policy is where you are, or who you work for, but this does not seem to be the case.

So, yes, I am still outraged... as my information is somewhat different than yours. But, I as I cannot prove my information as fact... it would be hard to totally be a smart butt back.

Droopyz~
Code Enforcment should have gas efficient vehicles & leave them at their offices.. I agree, & see your point.

Most agencies are also cutting back to 4 & 6cyl. unmarked cars. You will see this change sooner or later. As for officers not paying to take their cars home?.. Where I work we do its written in the policy, I have talked with Orange county deputies and and other city officers, they have told me the same they have to pay if out of county. But like you I can only go on what Im told there too.

ACages~
Responce times would really suck, think about itan officer gets called in and has to drive from home to the station check out his/her car then responde to where ever they are needed.

what happened? Did somene put me on the ignore list? How come I cant get an answer to my question? Here is another question. How many times does an emergency worker get called in off duty that lives in another county? Is the program worth the money that is being put in to it. If it really is a deterent then why were OPD cars being broken in to and weapons being stolen? Why do we see marked cars dropping off their kids at school? Like I said I am not trying to bust anyones bubble but I think that with the shrinking budgets, these questions should be asked and answered. Is this policy open to all employees or is there special circumstances?

Cut and paste So if a Palm Bay officer lives in Titiusville How much would would he pay out of his check because now we are talking about a round trip of about 100 miles but it is still inside the county.

I really hate when people make the responce time excuse for these cops. There is no responce time for when the cops are using the cars for their own personal errands. I know pleanty of cops who brag about how they save on fuel by doing this. I know of one who lives down the street from me whos a Winter Park cop and only pays $50 more a month to take it home. He has never once been called in for a quick responce excuse either. 80 miles a day for free.
As for code enforcement, I didnt mean the Prius exactly, I meant a car that gets good gas milage better then the 12 to 14 these big trucks get. These cars dont need electric windows, radios, or anything fancy at all in them except for the standard A/C unit. They are driving around in leather plush fully equiped big gas guzzeling trucks.
I drive an H3 with my company logo on the side of it. Its a great way to advertise and its the best fuel efficiant vehicle I could find to also be able to tow my trailers with my cages on them for installation times. I got an average of 20mpg with it. I did install the superchip, k&n air filter, and the Vornado air fan thing into it for better milage and now im getting 22 to 24 mpg.
I pay out my butt for fuel, but its still cheaper then advertising anywhere else. Heck im not even in the phone book and I get calls all day mostly from word of mouth from other customers talking about how they got one of my cages. When im not hauling, then I do drive a fuel efficiant vehicle myself which is also labled and logoed for advertisement. So I do my part as I can for my own company, why cant the cities

AC~
I know in the policy I signed, I could recieve a repremant or loose my privlages if caught driving during off duty hours...

I wont speak for the rest, they will get theirs.. As the state funds dwindle the changes will start happening.. ;o)

As for the WPPD thats $50 a month the taxpayers are not having to spend.

Most cities ./ counties get a break being goverment entities, examples; gas could be 20% cheaper than the pump, tires could cost $25 - $65 each, repair shop costs are bidded out to the cheapest bidder.

Ref gas costs, I meant 20 cents, and that is part of the taxed cost.

Gee if they didnt drive them home at all that would be aout $400.00 a month the taxpayers wouldnt have to spend.
Now add up all the money the taxpayers do spend per month for all of the vehicles that are driven home and see how much the taxpayers wont have to spend.

I guess some ones missing the point..

When the officers paying the bill that the tax payer would be paying, that is if the officer wasnt paying the cost and the taxpayer was....

Oh never mind, Anywho with the steady climb of gas prices and the decresing budgets.. I think things will change on how agencies do their business..

As for Schools, the State of Florida Ledgistatures deside on a budget plan for all public schools. The monies are then sent to the counties. The counties school boards then decide on where the school cuts are made.

The city & county police and fire services come from a different budgets, than the schools..

Thats just it signal cops are paying for their use of the cars and its not a bad thing but the question was/is about the use of school / county trucks all of which are F150 or F250HD pick ups and they are fueled at the county pumps (I was curious so I walked across the street and asked) the school trucks do not charge mileage and do not ask for reimbursement for gas , as far as code enforcement I will as Kelly when she comes by on Saturday what they are doing...but this poster has found at least one “loop hole” that our county should plug...with budget dollars getting tight we should not be paying for extra “perks” , its bad enough that we must pay for towncars for board members out of our school buget.

Thanks RNC..., I am not sure how the whole county does it, I only saw a code enforcement truck.
Signal, I agree that school budgets are different from the rest of the county services.. somewhat. But, those budgets are derived from as need basis at the state level. Why should we as taxpayers allow these "extra perks" with no side benefits (Emegency responders not included, of course - see above) go on, and not force the state to divide the money to more pressing areas of need.

Hey signal ..you say that the police are paying 20% less for gas ? Last I checked (10 years ago) the unit price being payed for gas at the 33rd street pump was a lot higher than market price...of special interest to me at the time was a per gallon price of $3.00 in the year 1995 ! And as far as state agencies I have been watching trends in metro fuel contracts around the state Lakeland just signed a contract for $4.42 a gallon (diesel) for its bus fleet three months ago when the market price was a full dollar less than that! But hey at this rate it could wind up being a deal before the end of the year...LOL In other news Tampa is paying $4.60 a gallon for the next 2 years for all its buses ...so if our local law enforcement is in fact paying less than street price it would be quit a surprise and would lead me to ask why I see sheriff officers fueling at BP with a “fleet” credit card so frequently ? Does the county have a contract with BP ?

RNC08~ The cities & counties have always gotten their gas at a wholsale price. a few cents cheaper so to speak, however in present day they have found its cheaper to pay at normal gas stations. they are paying what we are paying as its cheaper than what they would be paying now.. Does that make scence?
