My Uncle Ed, my cousin Ed Jr. and his wife Debbie, and their son, Blake all survived Ike. They live just 74 miles to the NW of Galveston, and 35 miles SW of Houston, in Rosenberg, TX. The damage we're seeing on T.V. doesn't even come close to showing "what it really is"! It will be WEEKS (possibly 2-3) before they get their power back. My cousin said everything has come to a screeching halt, and will probably remain that way for awhile. It's still raining, too! The economic impact will be devastating.

Debbie, glad to hear they are Ok, They will pick up the pieces and rebuild there lifes like we do in Florida all the time. We went thru this in 2004-5 and we are stronger. I don't wish these storms on anyone, but I'm glad it passed us by. It was much stronger when it was off our coast and would have been a lot worse had it hit here...

Good to hear Deb that they made it ok even if they took some damage. You can replace a house you can't replace a person.

I too have several family members in TX. My cousin lives in Galveston and no longer has a house. The storm surge took it out completely along with several homes on each side of him. His sister and brother live in Houston and they too took some heavy damage but at least the basic parts of their homes is sturdy. The youngest of this clan is in San Ant's and she was ok. After spending a crazed weekend not being able to get in touch with any of them I finally heard this morning that all were OK, and while they did loose alot, they ALL survived what could have been far worse.

I guess the real lesson is that no matter how advanced we think we are as humans...Mother Nature can just smack us like the ugly child and put us all in our place.

((((hugs to you and yours Deb))))

(((((Hugs back at you and yours, too T!)))))
I'm glad your people survived too. Dang, that storm made a mess, didn't it?
Rott, I hear ya! Glad it wasn't us, sorry it was them, but glad it wasn't worse than it was.... Noticed you did a little
"housecleaning" on your favorites! LOL
Cro, Thanks, Hon! It's a good thing "Liarboy" will be dropping 2 zillion pounds of supplies off to help, right?

Yeah Deb, it looks bad. They showed streets inland with several boats laying across them and entire strips where the buildings were COMPLETELY gone with only the metal poles where signs hung still in place. Saw a Wendy’s sign, but no Wendy’s. Glad your dudes & dudettes are ok. Isn’t that amazing. Galveston was demolished twice, 108 years apart. I’ve heard Texans say they thought another one was due (I guess after the 1900 devastation, they sort of were counting the years, always expecting another one some day.) It’ll be YEARS before they can rebuild all of that. But if I know Texans, and I do, they’ll Git-R-Done! So FalseDude is paratrooping in from his Stealth Bomber and saving Texas huh? What would the World do without him? On a lighter note, I saw a Whataburger that looked intact. Made me hungry! Ever have one? I’m not a big Fast Food Burger guy, but they make AWESOME burgers. For some reason, Texas and West, esp. CA, they have REALLY good burger joints. Big chains and little ones – all better than Wendys/BK/McD burgers (which I never eat anymore). Jack in the Box is great, In & Out Burger is burgerlicious, oh yeah, RED ROBIN with the Egg & Bacon on them!!! It’s enough to have Emeril saying, “Oh Yeah Babe”!

gman, those Whataburger are the best, but where on earth do ya get one anymore? I'm sick, with no appetite, but the thought of one of THOSE actually made me hungry!
My Uncle Ed, cousin Eddie and his son Blake are "tuff enough,' but Momma (my cousin's wife) is the one who will be having a hard time. She's a "big-haired" long-nailed woman, who "needs" her spa time! And no 'lectricity!
Ding Dang IT! They were as "prepared" as they could have been, but supplies do run out, eventually. The Texas Nat'l Guard is there, along with many other Disaster Relief Teams, so hopefully they'll get back on their feet soon.

I hope you get well soon Deb. As for where to get a Whataburger in Orlando, I have good news for you. I’ve noticed 3 brand new ones in Orange county that opened maybe 1-2 years ago now. Before that, as far as I knew, O-Town didn’t have any. I just checked and they have a website (www.whataburger.com) where you can enter your zip and find the closest one. But you probably know where the Florida Mall is, right? There’s one just West of there. You’d take Sandlake Rd. West from the mall, continue maybe 1/2 mile, then turn left on 423. It’s right around there. Better wait until you feel better though – they’re deliciously heavy – requires a stomach of steel!

I think I can picture “Momma”. Sounds like that character Flo from . . . “Alice” I think it was called . . . with the beau font do, long finger nails, and a TX accent. There are a lot of Big Haired ladies in TX aren’t there. And they are classy ladies for sure. All Class, smart, proper ladies . . . just with BIG hair! I hope Momma will be ok. I’m sure those other Big Haired Mommas around there will look after her. Get better soon!

gman, THAT's HER!!!! You nailed it, dead on the money! You always were good at picking it up like that! I hate the look of "big hair," that's been loaded with hairspray when it gets wet, though! Good Golly, what a freakin' mess that is..... LMLAO!
Thanks for the "Whataburger" info! Thanks, I am feeling better, too! ;o) XO!

Luckily for my Uncle Ed, he's on the same "line" that the hospital in Rosenberg is on, he has electricity now! They have told my poor cousin Eddie, and "Big Hair" Debbie, that they "be SOL, for at least a month"! She is beside herself, and I think she's ready to go to Kansas, or someplace like that!

So glad your family made it OK Deb!!!!

I was stationed in Wichita Falls, TX back in '80 when we got hit by a hugh tornado (killed over 50 people). I was very impressed with the way those Texans rebounded!! And they will rebound again!

Thanks, FlaNative! Good Gracious, 50 people in one, small place like that! Imagine how many families were affected!

I love MOST people, especially children and old people, and I am especially offended when someone hurts one of them. "NEVER WRESTEL WITH PIGS, THE PIGS LIKE IT, AND YOU'LL JUST GET DIRTY!" Modified from a quote by my dear friend, jfore
