Is it OK for McCain to say "lipstick on a pig",

but NOT OK for Obama to use that expression?

There is a very old expression,

"You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig".
That expression has been used as far back as

I can remember.  It means, you can dress something up,

but dressing it up won't change it.

When McCain was talking about Hillary's health plan, back in
Oct last year, McCain said Clinton's proposal was “eerily”
and went on to say, “I think they put some lipstick
on a pig, but it’s still a pig.”

McCain wasn't calling Clinton a pig. Was he?

Why whould anyone believe McCain didn't mean that
Hillary was a pig, but Obama meant Sarah was?

It's a commonly used expression, nothing more.
McCain and Obama have both used it.

Only people who use double standards would believe McCain didn't mean that Hillary was a pig and that Obama meant Palin was. In this case, it would be closed-minded right wing Republicans who are grasping at anything to gain votes. They're notorious for this type of maneuver. Obama and McCain were both using the familiar expression in reference to plans, not people.

No..Babe was a Blue Ox..Paul Bunyan's sidekick..

See there..This ALL could have been avoided if Obama had said "Put Lipstick on a Babe" instead..

Well the issue is that a week or so prior to Obama's stupid remark, Sarah Palin made "lipstick" her trademark, according to us women anyway. So the the link was to great not to "GET IT". Besides, in another part of the country the morron Joe Biden was introduced by referencing to the now infamous "lipstick" line. Conincidence? Think not.....

I am a female, and I do not believe "lipstick"
BELONGS only to Palin. I was wearing it before
she was born. "Lipstick on a pig" is a very common
expression, especially in political circles.
She (or her party) is acting like a big cry-baby.

I did a search on who coined the phrase "lipstick on a pig" and found this on WikiAnswers:

In 1985, KNBR, an AM radio station carrying the San Francisco Giants' baseball games, had raised $20,000 toward the construction of a new downtown stadium.

The city's Board of Supervisors, reluctant to commit to such a project, asked KNBR if they couldn't use the money to renovate Candlestick Park instead.

On November 16th, 1985, Washington Post ran an article about it, and quoted KNBR radio personality Ron Lyons as saying that the idea of renovating Candlestick Park "would be like putting lipstick on a pig."

It's a very common expression that's been around for a long time and both Obama and McCain were using it in the context of ideas/plans, not people.

Hi 2wheller, Thanks for tracking down the expression.
I've heard it often, but had no idea when it started.

Hi Cyn: You're welcome. I'm tired of hearing the boo-hooing about it (and I'm also a female voter). BTW, loved your "Adventures of Babe" comment on another blog. Had me in stitches!
