NEW YORK (AP) -- Republican John McCain says he's directing his staff to work with Barack Obama's campaign and the debate commission to delay Friday's debate because of the economic crisis.

In a statement, McCain says he will stop campaigning after addressing former President Bill Clinton's Global Initiative session on Thursday and return to Washington to focus on the nation's financial problems.

McCain also said he wants President Bush to convene a leadership meeting in Washington. Both he and Obama would attend the session.

What do you make of McCain's decision?  Think Obama will follow his lead suspending his campaign?

Update: Senator Obama says he doesn't want to delay the debate.  Obama also says the most important thing he and John McCain can do is issue a joint statement letting Congress and Americans know there is unity to get something passed.

Thanks for blogging,
Corrina

McCain has always been the one to collect the leaders right-center-left on issues that have become unmoveable. From war, to judicial nomenations, energy, and now economy. I think he is just drawn to such challenges.

The left however is trying to spin this as an inability to multi-task, and that is going to backfire, as we all remember that we couldn't find time to pass energy bills for gas prices, and when Harry Reid the top leader of the Senate announces that "We just don't know what to do" should send citizens into a maddening panic! I suggest the Obama camp look over their own shoulder before pointing any fingers...

Thia is the SECOND time that McCain has effectively suspended his Campaign ( though THIS time he Officially did it ) in a time of Emergency..The FIRST was with the RNC Convention when he directed ALL efforts to the Hurricane Relief efforts..

As for Obama NOT going back to Washington and his statement that a President MUST be someone who can do MORE then ONE thing at a time..That's ALL well and good but Obama's NOT THE PRESIDENT,,,He's a SENATOR..

And he's NOT doing mulitasking ANYWAY..He's Campaigning while OTHERS tackle the PROBLEM..

As for Reid,, the DEMOCRAT Leader in the Senate,, YESTERDAY he said that McCain's Presence was Vital to work this out..NOT Obama's..Just goes to show how much INFLUENCE the Messiah has in the Santae anyway..

I think what McCain is doing is showing everyone how much he loves this country. No other Presidential candidate has ever suspended his campaign to work on the economy or other issues affecting America during an election year. As for Obama suspending his campaign yea I think he will. When H*LL freezes over. In other words no I do not think so.

The time for McCain to worry about the economic crisis was during all those years when he voted for unbridled deregulation and tax breaks for corporations sending capital and jobs overseas, while voting against sanctioning Red China for unfair, unbalanced trade practices. His sudden concern for the economy is disingenuous, for his policies provided the crucible for the meltdown. This economic crisis can't be solved by a quick-fix bailout whose white-collar corporate welfare is going to saddle generations of average Joe taxpayers for generations to come. Congress needs to take its time rather than rush into anything rashly -- so it's odd that McCain can't spare a few hours to make the debate.

McCain's suggestion that the presidential debates be moved to the scheduled VP debate makes it quite obvious that Palin isn't ready. And for that matter he probably isn't either unless he can get another deal like he did for the Rick Warren sham.

If Palin is ready, why not flip flop the VP and presidential debate days? Have the VP debates in place of the Presidential debates and vice versa.

McCain doesn't have to be in Washington at all times to have a part in the bail-out. As Obama stated, this is exactly the time that the people need to hear from the candidates regarding their plans to fix the messes that we are in.

The debate will only require a short amount of time if McCain wants to be involved in the development of bail-out legislation. If he was a true conservative he might even oppose such bail-outs for private businesses.

yea sensiblejoe.. way back when.. lets just start with 2006 when McCain's legislation was brought before the House and it was met with a straight down the line party vote, and was crushed by the Democrats on that line! So bad that the bill was not even put to the Senate!

Or maybe one of the times prior to that like 2005, or hey maybe when Sen. Dole herself brought forth legislation in 2003, 2004, 2005, etc and ALL were either blocked by Democrats in a fillabuster as a minority OR crushed by Democrat lead committee!

Only people being disinguineous here Joe buddy is liberal hacks such as yourself who just can't bring yourself to actually bring the voting records or facts to the table....

Shadows, shadows, shadows...even when someone other than OBama tries to make an attempt at goodness...you slander it. Palin will "slice and dice," that drunk Biden. McCain's sincere, but unfortnately party lines run deep. Remember, he's not a true Republican's republican...so, if Obama continues to bawk at his reques, it trulty shows that obama is playing games. AFter all, he avoided any debates, townhall mtgs...because of his perpetual incompetence...if obama were smart, he'd come together with McCAin and others...that would win him votes...but, his arrogance is our ally.

As I said..OBAMA'S NOT the President..He's a SENATOR and he's NOT where he's SUPPOSED to be..

THIS will be decided LONG before the election..

IN his monumental ARROGANCE he has miscalculated BADLY..

THIS thing,, one way or the other,, will Culminate in the NEXT few days..

IF CONGRESS succeeds In their efforts it will be seen that OBAMA had NOTHING to DO with it EVEN though he'll TRY to claim that the plan was ALL HIS like he did with the Surge.....

IF they FAIL it will be seen as though HE was the ONLY one that didn't even THINK it important enough to TRY..He'll claim THEN that it FAILED because they DIDN'T use his plan but THAT won't help..

He's STILL not there and THAT'S all people will see..

Obama nailed it on the head: the President of the United States has to be able to do more than one thing. Oddly enough, McCain didn't run right back to Washington DC -- while canceling an appearance on Letterman, he stopped by Katie Couric's for an interview, looking every bit a deer in the headlights for all his $5,000 make-up job. Obama, at least, pushed for adding taxpayer protection, legal oversight and no golden parachutes for the greedy, irresponsible CEOs in the forthcoming bailout legislation in the past few days -- all missing from a badly flawed bill by Bush and company that demanded $700 million in taxpayer money with no strings attached and no accountability or legal recourse whatsoever. Imperial, authoritarian pretensions continue unabated at the White House, it seems. Thank God Obama and other commonsensical Democrats and Republicans are putting the brakes on that juggernaut, asking questions and pressing for guarantees for the common good and the average American.

OBAMA doesn't GET Ideas..He STEALS them...

MARK my words..Before this is over it'll BACKFIRE on him JUST like everything ELSE he's tried to pull like that ad about McCain not being able to use a computer..

As for this business of Interviews,,

Obama gets on “This week with George Stephanopoulos” and Lets slip that he IS a Muslim and Ole Georgie Boy COVERS for him by CHANGING the Claim..”You mean Christian,,Don’t you??”

“Eh?? Oh,, OH YEAH,,I MEANT Christian..”

Palin gets interview by Charlie Gibson who OBVIOULY viewed her with contempt and asks,,
Basically,,

Do you think you’re ready for this job? SHE responds by saying YES and a Gibson,, while looking down his nose at her,, retorts with another question in effect,,

Don’t you think that THAT’S a bit ARROGANT??

Now..I don’t know WHERE the MSM ever got the Idea that THEY are the FORTH Branch of the Government and that ALL candidates MUST go through THEM but I LIKE the response that Palin came up with in answer to all this criticism..Basically,,She said..

I’ve BEEN answering REAL questions the WHOLE time out there in the REAL world by REAL people..

I’m NOT here to Please the NEWS agencies..I’ll run my campaign the way that I see fit..Not the way that THEY do..

If it were ME,, I’d tell the OBAMA Propaganda Machine,, the MSM,, that EVEN some Leading Democrats have come out and said were IN THE TANK for OBAMA,, to kiss MY @$$ too..

Now,,,,, THAT’S what I call,,,

LEADERSHIP…

LMAO..

Obama is still young enough that he can do more
than one thing at a time. He plans to do both;
attend the senate meeting & attend the debate.
I'm not really sure why McCain thinks he needs
to be present while they talk about the economy
since he has admitted that he knows nothing
about economics anyway.

Hear McCain talk about economics.

I wouldn't say that McCain has much more influence than Obama. What he does have, though, is something that B. Hussein Obama will never have- credibility.

Unlike Obama, McCain has actually worked across the aisle. He has taken much flak from his core support in doing that, but he has shown the courage to go against the grain. Obama has done nothing but supply more and more of the liberal koolaid.

Hey Beavis..AS usual..Your "Logic" FAILS you..

Obama is a JUNIOR Senator.. There is NO history there..NO history of ANY consensus surrounding ANYTHING that he's done or TRIED to do..NONE..NO reason to believe that HE can influence ANYBODY..

You think that HE can go in there and TELL Reid what to do??
Kennedy?? Dodd?? Rangel,, Schumer or ANY of them??

HE wouldn't be able to do THAT even if he should become President..

If you SERIOUSLY believe that he can..YOU ARE THE MORON..

I am NO fan of McCain but to compare these two on THIS matter strikes ME as just PLAIN STUPID..McCain has a LONG HISTORY of Influencing these guys...

He DIDN'T say that about Obama..HE could care LESS if Obama shows up at ALL..He's USELESS..THAT'S what it MEANS to be IRRELEVANT...

Of course Obama says he can do both things at the same time, the only thing HE has to do is vote "present" and he is done. People have to open their eyes and REALIZE that there is a REAL EMERGENCY; I personally applaud McCain decision on going to Washington, as a third line of communication is no good. If the solution is implemented it need everybody to read it and AGREE not make a partisan bickering as some have started to do, if there is something they don't agree they have to bring it up for discussion and by the way, the one that brought up UNNECESSARILY the phrase "TAXPAYER PROTECTION" was Senator Chuck Schumer, wasted democrat from New York, NOT NOBAMA.
As to the "debate" the only reason NOBAMA want to continue is because he already practice on the questions and his peanut brain forgets too quick, contrary to McCain who has actually acted and can answer THRUTHFULLY without anyone giving an script, as to "running back to Washington" the wastes of Reid and the BLEEP of Pelosi were making accusations on TV that backfire on them as the thief Christ Dodd was the one that should have taken steps to stop the upcoming financial crisis.
And again to those who are giving the excuses that the money from Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae for NOBAMA came from "INDIVIDUALS" look again; it came directly from Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae.

TM6068, you are usually able to do much better. You tried to change the subject, turn the point around, etc. but not very effectively.

The subject was McCain's attendance at the debate that both candidates (including him) agreed to. It is not about the town hall meetings that McCain wanted so that he might be able to control things as he did the Rick Warren interviews. He probably also wanted Obama to contribute financially to his campaign, but things just don't always work "his" way.

Try again, I have confidence that you can do much better.

McCain doesn't want to debate Obama for the soul reason that he his a horrible debator. Why not put it off for a week then come back saying, "Well now we simply have no time to debate, because of all the effort we put into finding a solution to the economic crisis." That's a sound strategy on his part.

I believe that Obama is doing the correct thing here. He is atop of the situation from what I am hearing and giving his opinion to his fellow democrats. His opinion holds alot of sway in the democratic party so anyone who thinks he has no influence is simply deluded.

As for McCain he has always tried to bring everyone together then once there's a decision that wont backfire on him that's been agreed to by both party's he settles in and votes along the line. I think that's the definition of Maverick, one who votes what everyone else votes. Right?

If Obama wanted to debate, he'd have done the townhall debates with McCain this past summer. This is just a media ploy by "teleprompterman". He knows he isn't ready. McCain knows he is, but, it's business (you know, what we pay them to do) first.
