WASHINGTON (AP) -- The majestic grizzly bear, once king of the Western wilderness but threatened with extinction for a third of a century, has roared back in Montana. The finding, from a $4.8 million, five-year study of grizzly bear DNA criticized by Republican presidential candidate John McCain as pork barrel spending, could help ease restrictions on oil and gas drilling, logging and other development.

Researchers with the U.S. Geological Survey announced Tuesday that there are approximately 765 bears in northwestern Montana. That's the largest population of grizzly bears documented there in more than 30 years, and a sign that the species could be at long last rebounding.

The first-ever scientific census shattered earlier estimates that said there were at least 250-350 bears roaming the area. More recent data placed the minimum population at around 563 bears.

Do you agree with McCain?

Thanks for blogging,

Corrina

...spending a billion dollars a year to count bears ? Now that is “pork” at its very finest, I do have a question dear in exactly what way does bear counting in only Montana have any affect on oil-gas drilling ? I have seen the map and Montana is not exactly over flowing with Oil of Natural gas...bottom line ...IF Dems are changing their tune and saying OK to drilling based on this stupid study ,,,,you can go ahead and pull my other leg now !

Exactly why are we studying bear DNA? Unless there is some missing information, yes, I agree with McCain on this one. That is pork barrel spending.

Hi Corrina,
How are you?
Counting Bears? I hope McCain puts an end to that one when he is elected. RNC there are more Dinosaur fossils there than any thing. That must be why they were counting bears to see if it is safe to excavate the fossils.

I agree with McCain. That is a fortune to spend on a head count of bears in one state.

Totally wasteful, and outrageous.

I would love to see a breakdown of how that money was spent!

There's a good book on genetics called : Tears OF THE CHEETAH, by Stephen J. O'Brien. Loss of the top preditor in any food-chain means that an enviromental decline and species crash will follow. I don't believe it pork-barrel for two reasons : the stated belief that it may ease drilling and I heard on the radio mention of a PORK-BARREL project mentioning funding and POLO PONIES ! I'm pretty sure a YAGHT CLUB was mentioned as well. Great post Corrina !

I think that as usual Republicans cant grasp the depth of the science involved. I think few understand the delicate balance even the few remaining bears have on the ecosystem. If we do not research Grizzly Bears, we will not find out what elements impact nature and what things we can do to ease our impact. By doing that we can then find out ways to drill for oil and natural gas with out endangering out the wild life. It's simple but republicans would rather take that $4.8 million dollars and give it away as a tax cut or pump it into a war.

It just go's to show that no matter how much experience you can have in politics, it always comes back to what you can do for the hand that feeds you. Just remember we the constituents aren't feeding McCain, he's being fed by the fat cats that want to open up oil and prolong the war not matter what impact it has on the Middle Class American. God save us all if we go through another eight years of republicans raping America to make themselves richer.

Hey you're back! And with the same republicans are idiots philosophy! Tell me would you like to be under the control of Bin Laden. Or be attacked everyday because we were to much of a cowered to go after him? Here is a question for you. How is spending millions on counting bears going to help us win this war. That should be our primary objective at this time not counting bears.

Is there any documentation about where and what those funds were used for? 4.8 million in five years is a lot of money for counting Grizzlies.

What was so great about the Clinton years? Weren't they involved in some illegal stuff. Maybe it's not illegal to get a BJ from someone other than your wife in the Oval Office. Not illegal, JUST WRONG! LOL

May God save us if the Dumbocrats throw our money away counting bears Sagebrush.

I would still like to know why it cost so much money to count a bear population in one state?

If that is not major porkage, nothing is.

McCain was right!

I like how you guys have no valid points to make that isn't the same tired rhetoric that's already been disproved by experts so you make personal attacks.

As for 4.8 million being a lot of money, it probably barely covered the cost for doing research. It's expensive to do research especially one that will benefit all of us in the end. The research is detrimental to learning more about environmental impact. That's the problem here alot of republicans have let people tell them their facts for so long they no longer look at the big picture.

So here it is, by figuring out the impact of what we are doing now with regards to the affects that mining, drilling and harvesting have on the environment we can better see what we can do to have least amount of impact overall.

Oh and by the way this report stated that drilling and mining had little impact on how fast the grizzly bear was recovering. That means that what we are doing in that region with regards to conservation is on the right track and opens up the possibility for more harvesting, mining and drilling to be done in the future. So I guess that report that supports the republicans wanting to open up more lands for development is a waste of $4.8 million. I guess it is if you're to stupid to actually understand whats being stated.

I think that's the point, McCain has no grasp of the big picture, he's a administrator who doesn't have a global view. I admire his accomplishments but none of them showed outstanding insight on his part. He tow's the party line 98% of the time but because he votes against them 2% of the

from improving recreational halibut fishing to studying the

So you THINK that counting bears takes 4.8 MILLION dollars Alfalfa?

You speak of research. Can you be more specific? What research? Was it actually neccessary? Can you give a breakdown of where the money went, and to who?

What is YOUR valid point?

It is porkage at its finest!

McCain was right! This is Montana, not Alaska! There is no oil in Montana! A HUGE waste of taxpayer money!

I thought we were talking about grizzlies? How in the sam hell did palin get in this? 4.8 mill is a little much to tranquilize a bear and collect DNA dont'cha think? As far as drill baby drill the first line in the article mentions environmentalist battle developers,That first line eliminates all credibility, So what she hunts and kills the poor little critters, Big deal they are a food source put hear by GOD, Oh that's right you flamers don't beleive in such a being or higher power thats why it's okay to kill your own babies, I can't stress enough that everyone here needs to check out the links in the three previous posts before daytona franks to see what these tree huggers are all about if you don't already know.

The left are running scared, Miss Palin is for Babies, Bridges, Guns and Jesus, That's all they have they can't find anything else and nobody cares except the kook fringe left, This woman has captured the hearts of common American's and lit a fire under this country that not even the flamers on the left can't put out, Have failed at all attempts so far to discredit her, She is doing something Hillary and most of the left find it impossible to do, Connect with and have a lot in common with the normal everyday working American, Now that IS REAL CHANGE!
