ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- In a day of stunning disclosures, John McCain's running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, said Monday her 17-year-old unmarried daughter was five months pregnant, and it was revealed an attorney was hired to defend the governor in a probe into the firing of her public safety commissioner.

The revelations threatened to steal any remaining thunder from Day One of the Republican National Convention, which already was overshadowed by Hurricane Gustav -- and brought unwanted attention to the 44-year-old governor, a self-described "hockey mom" with little experience on the national stage. The GOP convention had already been scaled back because of the hurricane, and just three days after McCain named Palin as his vice presidential running mate.

Coming after the randomness of Gustav, the revelations added to the sense of unscriptedness hanging over the convention. "Life happens," said McCain adviser Steve Schmidt, talking about the pregnancy story. "An American family," added colleague Mark Salter.

In a brief respite from partisanship, Democratic rival Barack Obama weighed in: "I think people's families are off limits and people's children are especially off limits."

McCain aides said the announcement about the pregnancy of Palin's daughter, Bristol, was aimed at rebutting Internet rumors that Palin's own youngest son, born in April, was actually the daughter's The national convention, which a political party counts on to send its candidate surging into the fall campaign, already had been relegated to a distant second to the hurricane on TV, in newspapers and on Internet Web sites.

The pregnancy statement, attributed to Sarah and Todd Palin and released by the campaign, said that Bristol Palin would keep her baby and marry the child's father, identified only as a young man named Levi. The baby is due in late December.

"Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We're proud of Bristol's decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents," Sarah and Todd Palin said in their brief statement.

Palin had told McCain's team about the pregnancy during lengthy discussions about her background, aides said. At several points, McCain's team warned Palin that the scrutiny into her private life would be intense and there was nothing she could do to prepare for it.

What do you make of today's announcement?

Thanks for blogging,
Corrina

All kidding (and my usual partisan persona) aside. This is a very big question and it has very large implications for all woman now and in the future. Fact is that this “question” would not be raised if Sarah Patin where a man, so this speaks directly to how we are going to allow future generations to view woman. ...Is It OK to “judge” a woman as handicapped by their family ? Is it (still) OK to say that a woman is less qualified than a man for any position because of her gender based on the idea that she has a greater obligation to family .
Let me put this another way, I look in on other Fox stations nation wide (well all stations actually) and I do not see woman as lead anchors , is this not odd ? Woman compose the majority of the general population and comprise 75% of the TV news staff nation wide and yet very few ever rise to the top. ...so the question for you personally is : in 10 years or so should Your gender be a factor against you personally assuming the big chair at Your station ?

...Hey Cale , I am not picking on you (for once LOL) or the job you are doing. What I am saying is that when I held jobs as a boss (yea I know) and the company had over 200 African Americans on the pay roll and only 12 white people (true story by the way!) I did not expect that when I quit I would be replaced by a white man...the “odds” should be against it! But fact is even with so many woman working on air at a TV news station the “odds” will not fall in the favor of a woman being selected for the lead desk...

Obama says family's are off limits...so WHY are the media hounds braying on this trail? We left Clinton's family out of it..and Kerry's..and Edwards...But because Sara isn't a man, somehow it is all different? Leave this stuff alone already!

What do you make of today's announcement?

Well, I do not understand why you decided to post a blog on this. Can you please explain Corrina?

This post was totally unnecessary. Can't you dig up something on Obama's kids? There MUST be something there!

If Biden has kids, (God forbid) there must be some action there too!

I think the media should focus on Palin as a Governor and what she did for Alaska not her 17 year old daughter who is pregnant. I wonder how many women news anchors have a child that they had when they where 17? Do not throw rocks in a glass house people. They are a typical family!!! Although I do not agree with what she did. It happens.

...well you know I have a very “big dog” and I could stand around making a wonderful “speech” about how I will not take any aggressive action against you , no I will stand by and not attack you in any way....while that big black dog of mine chews you up ! That is the position Obama is in he does not need to attack Sarah Patin but only because the media is more than willing to do it for him! This would be scandalous if the writer of this post was attacking Hillary Clinton with questions like this (against her opponents wishes) but its fuel for Obama's campaign so its totally fair ! ...and still the smug liberal hacks in the media wonder why we call them “bent to the left”

A son and a brother of Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. (D-Del.) are accused in two lawsuits of defrauding a former business partner and an investor of millions of dollars in a hedge fund deal that went sour, court records show.

And from ABC

The son of Barack Obama's vice presidential pick, Sen. Joe Biden, is a top partner at a Washington law firm that has lobbied his father's office, a family tie that could prove embarrassing for a campaign that has positioned itself as fighting lobbyists and special interests in Washington.

BUT He's not pregnant!

To my shock today..I found gov Palin being attacked because she is a staunch supporter of abstinance only policy... one comment.."well it didnt seem to work so well for her house.."
Note, the following comment comes from a former teen parent (me)..who had the audacity to have two children before I was 20 year old!

There is nothing wrong with a mother and leader having her opinion on sex before marriage...just because her daughter went out and had sex against her parents wishes, like she is the ONLY teenager in the world to break her parents rules, doesnt mean that Palin should now change her mind about abstinance.
What a ridiculous argument that lady had from Headline news..she is a joke of a commentator and I hope they remove her.
Having seen the error of my judgement and having taken care of all my children, without leaning on government programs my entire life, I know now what stupid teenagers rarely seem to comprehend. Does your kid drink, smoke, lie, steal, have sex?? If you say no, great..I certainly hope you truly know your teenager..after raising 3 so far, with one more to go...I now know, no matter what I teach them at home...including using myself as an example of what not to do...they don't ALWAYS listen.
The governor is now experiencing some real life struggles...and the daughter will marry this boy and struggle on as young parents..hopefully it works out for the best...
Sara Palin tried to teach her kids what we all should be teaching them...whether or not it is normal these days..her daughter didn't listen, did things her own way and is now pregna

Corrina, you really love being the drama queen...is a pregnant 17 yr old, regardless of who her parents are, really newsworthy? Don't you think that national issues are more pertinent than the same old gossip? Be a little more professional, will ya?

Corrina is very professional. She just thought this was news worthy. Can you really fault her for that? It is kind of news, I mean how many VP candidates have a 17 year old pregnant daughter?

Vancouver, how many VP candidates have a son and brother facing jail time because they are liars, thieves, and scammers?

Let me answer that for you! Only one! Joe Biden!

So now tell me why a pregnant girl is worse than that, and much more newsworthy?

DaytonaFrank,
I can not answer why Joe Biden's son and brother are not as news worthy as Palin's daughter they should be. I think if you are going to report about Palin's daughter then you should report about Biden's son and brother as well.

Tell me, Corrinna, when you call it THIS wrong, does it make you wonder if you're in the right job?

I mean, seriously, you'd think that a NEWS woman would have SOME ability to forecase these things, and a WOMAN would know a LITTLE about what it means to be a mother.

Tell you what - ask your mom if you're ever an embarassment to her with this ridiculous crap. Then imagine how you'd feel if you were seventeen, and every liberal pinhead in the nation were making that same suggestion to you

Vancouver, you can't answer that? Gee that's simple...it's because 1) She's the Rep VP nominee 2)She's a woman

The trash that Obama's had out there eclipses any and all combined from the other side; and yet, he's the media darling and untouchable....

That's similar to the mom that still loves her kid, even after he raped and killed small children....the media CHOOSES to overlook Obama's incredible dirty side, and it's evident everytime Campbell Brown, Chris Matthews, Andrea Mitchell...etc..open their mouths.

I am all for Palin and McCain. Obama is not the media DARLING he is the media MUSSIA. Before he speaks the media goes the chosen one is about to speak be quite. And no I do not get why the Republicans are singled out. They are the oldest political party in this country and they are also the ones with the most honorable things tied to their names. Lincoln ended slavery, Roosevelt saved us from NAZI Germany by joining the war, Reagan ended the Iron Curtain and rejoined EAST and WEST Germany. Need I go on!!!
