BALTIMORE (AP) -- A 21-year-old woman accused of staving her toddler to death while a member of a religious cult was ordered held without bail Tuesday, and her attorney suggested that she was not responsible for her son's slaying.

Ria Ramkissoon wore a purple jumpsuit and a blank expression during her appearance Tuesday at the city's booking center, answering only, "Yes," when asked whether she had read the charges against her.

Her attorney, Steven D. Silverman, argued for bail to be set, but District Court Judge Theodore B. Oshrine decided that holding Ramkissoon without bail was appropriate because of the seriousness of the allegations. "This is not a black-and-white case," Silverman told the judge. "I'm convinced from talking to her that she's been grossly overcharged." Silverman said after the hearing that his client, a petite native of Trinidad who moved to Maryland with her mother at the age of 8 and has no criminal record, was manipulated by cult members. "She did not in any way initiate or cause the death of her son, and we are going to, I think, have a very easy time proving that," Silverman said. "The members of this cult, who were more than twice her age, were calling the shots. ... She bought the program, hook, line and sinker."

Four other alleged members of the group known as 1 Mind Ministries also face first-degree murder charges in the death of Javon Thompson, who was about 15 months old when he died. Bail reviews for two of them -- Queen Antoinette, 40, the alleged cult leader; and Trevia Williams, 21 -- were postponed Tuesday. While Ramkissoon had her bail review, another alleged cult member, Marcus A. Cobbs, was in a family courtroom for a paternity case filed by Tiffany N. Smith, who was identified in court documents as a former member of 1 Mind Ministries.

A judge ruled that Cobbs was the father of one of Smith's children but not the father of another. Smith declined to comment after the hearing. A bail review has not yet been set for Cobbs, who also faces murder charges in Javon's death.

A fifth alleged cult member, Steven Bynum, has been charged in a warrant and remains at large. Police allege in court documents that Ramkissoon conspired with the four other cult members to deprive Javon of food and water in December 2006, and that the boy died after two days without nourishment. Antoinette wanted to punish the toddler for refusing to say "Amen" after meals, and cult members also viewed him as a "demon," according to the documents. The documents allege that Antoinette later put Javon's body in a suitcase that was hidden in a shed behind a Philadelphia home for more than a year.

Police recovered the suitcase in April. DNA tests are pending to confirm that the body inside was Javon's. A public defender appointed to represent Antoinette, Williams and Cobbs in a previous case did not return messages seeking comment.

The three were scheduled to be re-arraigned Wednesday morning in that case, which stemmed from a scuffle with police officers who tried to remove a child from the headquarters of 1 Mind Ministries.

Blog us with your thoughts.  Do you buy this woman's claim that she's not responsible... that 1 Mind Ministries is to blame?

Hi Corrina,
Not responsible, sounds like brain washing to me. Or maybe she is a nut case!!! You would think that someone who is 21 has enough intelligence to know that what the cult was telling her to do was wrong. But a 21 year old should also know not to get involved with cults. What is going on in this country? Seriously. How old was the boy Corrina? I think they should lock this "MOTHER" up and throw away the keys or better yet why not starve her. Then she can see what it feels like.

The mother and the cult are both to blame. God has endowed every human being with free will and a reasoning brain, and he expects us to use both. People seem all too keen on abdicating their questioning and critical faculties, as well as personal responsibility, in many areas of life, including religion. When a "religion" tells you to harm your body, your spouse or your children, or disrupts your ability to cope with life and reality, or teaches you to view other human beings as "demons," it's pretty clear that it's not bent on making you a better human being or honoring your dignity as a creation of God. The only logical response is to say "This is suspect" and run in the opposite direction, for one's own well-being and that of others around you.

" a 21 year old should also know not to get involved with cults"

Yet people join churches all the time.

The boy was 15 months old.

this is so sad. This is why I am worried sick about my own child, who is 19..though she has no children and I pray, she doesn't, her so called boyfriend BELONGS to this Church WHO HAVE CONDONED HER MOVING OUT; FOR A LONG TIME I DIDN'T KNOW WHERE SHE WAS....FINALLY, I talk to her almost everyday and I HAVE PRAYED THAT SHE COMES BACK......so because of my personal experience, I have to believe that this mother is really LOST SOMEWHERE..IN THIS CULT......SHAME......

Churches are not cults. Cults are where you are told when to eat, sleep, what to do or how to think, How to act. A polygamist sect is a cult. A Church you are not told how to think, or act, or when to sleep. It is a free thinking environment free willed environment.

I feel bad for the child. Even if he had lived, his future, at least his childhood, would have probably been bleak under the tutelage of his crazy, fanatical, abusive parents.

Van, I could probably find a bible verse for most or all of the things you listed, not to mention several stories like Abraham's. Sick stuff!

Still, although it's nice to want to think of everyone else as a cult, Christianity, Islam, and most other religions are occult. They believe in the supernatural, ghosts, goblins, demons, angels, and the like. Nonsense.

Like it or not "Churches" are indeed cults. Unless you're in one, then it's a church.

Occultism can seem like a remedy to life's struggles but all it does is allow people to pretend the problems don't exist or that someone else is taking care of them. That's comforting but untrue.

What they should do is place her food and water just beyond her reach from her jail cell so she can see it and look at it but just can't get it! Let the WITCH starve to death....then justice will be served!

northton,
It is exactly this story why I am not affiliated with a church. I think it is wrong for a group of people to be able to brain wash you and tell you how to live and what to do. But my belief is that churches although they try to control you they are not cults.

i HAVE TO agree with Northon Van....though you are correct churches shouldn't be cults...BUT IN THIS STINKING WORLD WE ARE LIVING AND THE LEGISLATION ALLOWING ALL THESE IDIOTS TO HAVE CORPORATIONS ...IN THE NAME OF GOD..........yes it sucks and they do tell them WHAT TO WEAR, EAT AND WHAT TIME IT IS.......I can only pray that the Good Lord will WAKE MY CHILD UP AND BRING HER HOME......sad I can do anything OR I WOULD END UP IN JAIL........

I agree with sensiblejoe,
What she did was wrong, what the cult did was wrong, but the fact that she not only allowed it to happen, but also participated in it makes her the guiltiest of all, people who allow themselves to be brainwashed to the extent of harming another human being-especially a defenseless child, could not have truly been brain washed unless it was something they wished to do themselves and saw this cult as the perfect opportunity to deny responability for there own actions.
