TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Gov. Charlie Crist has dropped his long-standing support for the federal moratorium on offshore drilling. Crist on Tuesday endorsed Sen. John McCain's proposal to instead let each state decide whether to drill for oil and natural gas in waters off its shores. Crist has been mentioned as a possible running mate for McCain, the likely Republican presidential nominee. The governor says the nation needs to look at all options in response to rising fuel prices. Most Florida politicians have opposed drilling because they've been afraid it might damage the state's beaches that are vital to its tourism-dependent economy.

What do you make of this change of heart?

Thanks for blogging,

Corrina

Maybe, just MAYBE, he is starting to listen to the MAJORITY of the voters, not the few vocal, liberal tree-huggers. Now, if we can just get politicans to listen to us about amnesty!!

Hi Corrina,

I should explain my inquiry yesterday about the missing BLOG on Friday I was just concerned that you deleted it because it made you mad. Cale is right you are too nice instead of telling me that it upset you, you would probably just delete the thing. So if you did delete it next time let me know if I offended you. Ok.

Well this is music to me ears ( and no the word me is not a typo it is intentional)! It is about time that Crist starts thinking about what WE want instead of what he wants.

"Most Florida politicians have opposed drilling because they've been afraid it might damage the state's beaches that are vital to its tourism-dependent economy."

I disagree..MOST politicians are afraid of their OWN success and it's backlash....THEY are AFRAID that THIS propaganda has SO convinced the people that the allowance of such drilling will bring reprecussions..

As the State Budget gets tighter and tighter we shall eventually SEE the FULL extent of their concerns,,both REAL and CONTRIVED,, over the health and welfare of Florida's beaches..

It is an election year..what they say and what they do is two different things. It is strange how they changed their minds in just one week...hmmmm could it be they are getting bombarded again with petitions and emails just like they did on immigration?

He hasn't had a change of heart, but a change of political expediency. He's thinking not of what's good for Florida in the long run (as his misguided tax cuts in a year of budget deficits shows), but of towing the party line for the good of his own political career. Failing schools and polluted beaches for many, all for the enrichment of a few -- welcome to the new Florida, folks!

We have been played with the price of Gas making decisions on drilling that was off limits. No one would have allowed drilling at $2 gas, but they twisted our arms to get what they wanted.

But at the same time Red China will be drilling off the CUBA coast near Our reserves. OIL DRILLING is safer today and the odds are not as bad for leaks and problems... no leaks with Katrina Hurricane area wells. Same with Nuclear Power... not the same thing as it was 30 years ago.

Should Drill and then hope some Inventor puts them out of business.

I'm glad he changed his view point. I'm sure it was politically motivated. At this point, I don't care that it was a politically motivated change of heart. We need to drill off of our shores. To do it yesterday would not be soon enough. Can we build a few more refineries while we're at it? That would help keep the cost of fuel down while also dumping some GOOD jobs onto the local market.

The Environmentalist Whackos have HAD their say for TOO long..THEY want High Prices..They’ve been calling FOR them for YEARS..Their alarmist rantings are beginning to unravel..It has NOW become clear that the nation’s attitude is that Energy Imdepemdemce and TRUE Environmental Concerns NEED not be Mutually Exclusive..It DOESN’T have to BE one way OR the other..It CAN be BOTH and the American people are beginning to demand that it IS…

For TOO long the Extremists have OWNED this Issue..WE CAN drill and NOT pollute the Beaches..The Problem is that the Extremists want to SHUT the WHOLE Concept of Oil Production down and so far they’ve BEEN successful..

THEY HATE IT EVEN IF IT’S CLEAN..

It’s BEEN that way for some 35 years now..

THEY’D have us ALL walking if they got their way..NOT even a Horse and Carriage because the Animal would expell Greemhouse Gases..

I say DRILL,, GO to Nuclear Power and look into Alternative Energy Sources..Be MINDFUL of the Environment but NOT to the extent that we are forced back into the Stone Age by rediculous and unfounded claims…

WE,, as Americans,, have NEVER solved a problem by going BACKWARDS and we SHOULDN’T do so NOW…

We are GOING to HAVE to do it sometime..It is inevitable..

Let the Environmental Whackos go back to living in caves if THAT’S what THEY want to do but DON’T demand that I do so too…..I,,,, WE,,, have FAR better and more Important things to do..

I think he is going after being vice president. I don't think he's ready but whoever McCain chooses is who'll I'll vote for. Either way, we need to drill.

Crist was against it before he was for it, damn if that doesn't sound like Senator John Kerry ! He said he was reconsidering due to the effect gas prices were having the people. He was also intrested in " OIL " royalties. At 40-60 miles offshore you'd never see them from shore unless you were in a high rise with a telescope. It would also make a direct pipeline a possibility cutting spill possibilty from storm damage or tankers. Pipe crude ashore to a refinery in Florida. Anything wrong with creating new taxpaying industry and high paying taxpayer jobs ? Not to mention energy independence and at the least curbing high fuel costs.

Never to late to do the right thing! I understand why our governor had the wrong idea that we don't want drilling...because the paid lobbyists make it sound as if that is what we the people want, it is very hard for the real will of the people and our needs to get heard above the political agenda driven din on the hill.

Crist had no choice. People have had enough of the oil craziness. The American public have been spoon fed enviro-wackiness long enough that they have started accepting it as truth. The hard econonomic facts are finally starting to hit home.

When your grandchildren are spitting up blood or you're wearing a breathing apparatus everyday, perhaps you’ll look back on your statements and say, “boy, I was stupid.” When I was a boy, I could do handstands in the middle of Hwy 17-92, but now you’re lucky if you’re not getting bounced like a pin ball. That’s the difference in about 30 years. 30 years from now many of us will still be living, and the decisions we make now will affect our well being. We’ve already done so many stupid political things in the state of Florida that we are a joke in the entire world. We can’t let a “Brown Nose” like Charlie Crist trick us into doing some more stupidity. We need to protect our natural resources, and please don’t follow a flip-flopping traitor.

khazzi,

Perhaps you like paying $4.07 to fill up your car. Or maybe you drive a hybrid. I do not know. But I do know that most people do not own hybrids. And we are tired of you people not allowing us to drill. IT WILL NOT HURT THE COAST LINE, IT WILL NOT MESS UP YOUR VIEW OF THE OCEAN. IT WILL HOWEVER LOWER FUEL COSTS. I am not saying it will happen over night. But it will happen. Cost of fuel will go down so will the cost of living.

Any addiction to anything deteriorates one's life style. We've been addicted to oil to the point of epidemic proportions. WE THE USA need to make radical changes to address out future. It is very selfish and short sighted to take the risk of catastrophic environmental disasters. I see our job to today be no different than Adam, Moses, and Jesus; that is to attend to the beast of the fields, attend God’s gardens, and be a Shepherd to all we survey. Each man & women are tasks these deeds from birth. If Japan can produce a car that runs off water, so can we.

WOW!!! Thats deep!!! But your history is a little off. WE the USA have never had an enviromental catastrophy with any of our off shore drilling. I know other countries have had problems, they have even had ships run ground but we the US have never had any problems/ disasters.

This is just One Vancouver…
Sept. 7, 2005
Clean-up crews on Wednesday were trying to reach two sites on the Mississippi River where officials have spotted slicks and fear large oil spills.

One suspected spill in Chalmette, a town just a few miles southeast of New Orleans, was only recently detected and an oil storage tank there could have spilled some 10,000 barrels.

This was only 10,000 barrels, but with all the hurricanes we get, we'll be sitting ducks for disaster.

Has there ever been one of our off shore oil drilling stations damaged by a hurrican? I mean severely damaged where oil cleanup is needed? But really now we need to drill we need the oil. So I say the risk is minimum.

What I mean by the risk is minimum is this. The gain out ways the risk. Oil spills do not happen everyday.
