WASHINGTON (AP) -- Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Thursday the U.S. military was moving forward with plans to mount a relief mission in Myanmar, but he said he couldn't imagine air dropping aid without permission from the closed regime. His comments followed those earlier Thursday by Ky Luu, the director of the U.S. Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance, that an air drop was one of the options being considered as Myanmar's junta continued to stall on accepting assistance from the United States. Gates said the military was moving aircraft and ships into place to help deliver humanitarian supplies once permission is granted. "I cannot image us going in without the permission of the Myanmar government," Gates said at a Pentagon press conference with Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen. Asked if it would be helpful to victims for the U.S. to drop supplies, Mullen said: "We could. Typically, though, it's sovereign airspace and you'd need their permission to fly in that airspace." "It's all tied to sovereignty, which we respect whether it's on the ground or in the air," Mullen said.

What are your thoughts? Do you think the Myanmar government is letting pride get in the way?

Looking forward to your comments,

Corrina

Pride???
Well..I guess THAT'S the KIND way of referring to one of the most repressive regimes on the face of the planet..

ALL we need NOW is for Carter to go over there and Blast America on Worldwide Satellite TV..

That regime is HIS kind of People..

Well this sounds like Russia! You know when Chenoble blew sky high. Ego got in the way then too. If I remember correctly it took Russia two weeks before they asked for our help and even then we where only able to help in a limited capacity. If Myanmar wants our help then they should not be playing this ego game with us we have better things to do besides helping them like trying to find out who the democratic nomination will be!!!

We are trying SO hard to get permission to help these people, meanwhile, New Orleans still sits like a ghost town, no work, no jobs, no housing. WOW is it just me or is something wrong here when we spend millions in tax money to fund so called mercy AID to other countries and allow our own citizens to starve and become homeless

I think our government should fix our own problems before always handing out our money to everyone else.

When the sunami hit, the personal donations from the United States were 100 fold that of the governments. Opening the door is the key. We need to keep in mind that the people are suffering and its not their voice that is forbidding us to enter the country. Its the regimes.

This really is a shame. Those people
are dying off by the hundreds every day,
every hour. I certainly hope the leaders
of that regime get overthrown, assasinated
whatever to get the aid they need there.
If not, they deserve to get thrown in prison for life for allowing all the unnecessary death that's occurring there. Now that's an attack I'd support!

What's wrong with these "people"??

I have to agree though, I would rather see
that sort of aid going to Americans that need
it, particularly New Orleans.

To those that are referring to New Orleans, I submit the following:

This is too true to be very funny. The next time you hear a politician use the word "billion" in a casual manner, think about whether you want the "politicians" spending YOUR tax money. A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of its releases.

A. A billion seconds ago it was 1959.

B. A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.

C. A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.

D. A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.

E. A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it.

While this thought is still fresh in our brain, let's take a l ook at New Orleans. It's amazing what you can learn with some simple division . . Louisiana Senator, Mary Landrieu (D), is presently asking the Congress for $250 BILLION to rebuild New Orleans. Interesting number, what does it mean?

A. Well, if you are one of 484,674 residents of New Orleans (every man, woman, child), you each get $516,528.

B. Or, if you have one of the 188,251 homes in New Orleans , your home gets $1,329,787.

C. Or, if you are a family of four, your family gets $2,066,012.

What I meant is that there are issues that need correcting in America now that would serve all Americans not just one city that has been given aid since day 1. It has become apparent that no one wants to rebuild, They just want to live there when it is done.

The Myanmar government hasn't yet finalized the process by which the generals in charge of the country can PROFIT from international aid. As soon as they do that, they'll throw open the doors for any and all assistance the world is willing to send.

When the tsunami first hit, the US was criticized for not pledging enough aid.
We are always the bad guy and everyone's target.
This time, no country pledge much.

Nice post Ride , but it uses the original request that was made by NO for money and not the actual amounts that have been sent . So far (not including direct to consumer benefits welfare/Medicaid/housing assistance etc) we have paid NO $300 billion dollars ...so far.
But on the subject yes I must wonder why we would even consider forcing help on a hostile nation.

Now why won't anyone discuss the Islamic/Muslim connection here with this govt. and its military dictatorship....

They hate America but for only one main reason. I think its time to let the world know, and maybe lets take it to the world court, since we know the UN can't really do anything.

Just take the aid and send it to Dafur then!

Sovereignty is what is really at stake here. Every country has the right to their own political freedom or oppression for that matter. Just because they hate America doesn't give us the right to violate their airspace for any reason.

If it comes down to it, the people will see exactly what the country cares about most eventually and hopefully they can bring about change. Luckily their Armed forces are 30 years behind the times or I would probably be more tentative about a civil war in the region.
