(AP Religion Writer) Sen. Barack Obama's break with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright is putting black pastors and their congregations in a difficult position, their loyalties divided between a politician who could be the first black president and a celebrated preacher who many believe has been vilified.

The situation is complicated, ministers say, because there's a sense that both men have been treated unfairly -- and that both have made mistakes. Many black ministers defended Wright when his more incendiary remarks became an Internet sensation in March, saying context was needed to understand the black church's tradition of challenging injustice.

But Wright lost some of that support after his Monday appearance at the National Press Club in Washington, during which he claimed the U.S. government was capable of planting AIDS in the black community, praised Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan and suggested that Obama was acting like a politician by putting his pastor at arm's length while privately agreeing with him. The performance was enough for Obama to denounce Wright's comments as "divisive and destructive." That was just six weeks after he portrayed Wright, in a well-received speech on race, as a family member he couldn't disown.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks for blogging,
Corrina

He did not say the US was “capable of planting aids” dear he said guilty of creating aids to get rid of the black man ! He also called for separation of the back community from the nation as a whole with his constant mention of our inability to understand what he (and later Obama) calls “The Black church”...very disturbing indeed.

I wonder if Wright cares how much he hurt his friend's bid for President.
Saying that the US designed aids to kill black men is stupid.
Aids came out of Africa.
Apes have the virus but it is not deadly to them.
It was wide spread before it was even identified.
I do not see Wright as a good preacher.
There have been wonderful ones in my life.
It is too bad that this one gets so much attention.

I think after November comes and goes, Obama will be going to church more often and maybe go for some pentenance or something. Wow..with so much talk about State and Religion who would have thought this would end up exploding in Dah face...shame truly is sad.

also, I am actually getting real bad vibes this will not be a pleasant election year. I see things getting really ugly specially in DC; Jersey and some of the biggest Democratic States..it will not be a pretty election year. Oh Lord help us...I believe that we as residents and civilians should prepare ourselves for what's to come. If this election year turns out to be like the one so vivid in my mind in 1970 when the first Black Mayor was elected in the city of Newark...I can tell you..it will not be pretty.

If one does not agree with Wright, just ignore him. If one does not want to vote for Obama, just don't. What is so difficult about those choices?

Why does everyone seem so compelled to justify their choice or to convince others to make the same choices?

“pt calling the kettle black” there shadowes ...why speak out against the people speaking out unless you are selling a counter agenda of your own ? Ops there it is you want is to see only that witch is good for you side and forget all els.

I honestly fail to see how showing the racism in a man who has accused me (white Americans) of crimes of racism is wrong , and further more I can see no harm in showing how often Obama has used RW's viewpoint and even statements in his speeches

I am so sick of Rev. Wright and Obama. Wright is nothing more than a racist and Obama is nothing more than a Muslim. Neither men should ever accuse whites of being racist look a the history of African Americans. They where sold by their own people but blame the white people for slavery. They say we created aids to kill men of color we did not aids was transferred from monkeys to men. We are not the racist ones Rev. Wright is, Obama is.

AIDS has definately been PROVEN to have ORIGINATED in AFRICA,,NOT America..
