VATICAN CITY (AP) -- The Vatican's No. 2 official says Pope Benedict XVI recognizes the damage and pain caused by the clergy sex abuse crisis and will seek healing during his U.S. trip next week. Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone said in an interview Tuesday with The Associated Press that Benedict will deliver a message of "trust and hope." The pope turns 81 during the trip. Bertone says Benedict is fit but could not meet all the invitations from U.S. cities and had to limit himself to Washington and New York. Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden recently accused the pope of helping in a "new Crusade," but Bertone says the Vatican has faith in American security services to keep the pope safe. The cardinal is the Vatican secretary of state.

Think healing is possible?  In your opinion, did the Vatican handle the crisis well?

Thanks for blogging,

Corrina

Hi Corrina,
Healing? Is that supposed to help the victims or is the Healing for the Pope since he cannot control what the priests are doing? They'er hypocrites the Pope the clergy the priests they say since they speak for God then they are given a seat (or what ever its called) in Heaven. Well news flash the only way they are going to Heaven is if Jesus went around and did that to children, and I do not think he did so they should start preparing to spend eternity elsewhere. Crisis, the Pope would have covered this whole thing up if the parents had not gotten in volved! Thank (you know) they did. So it is his fault for this crisis.

Thanks for your comments. I know this isn't the easiest topic to blog about.

Good Afternoon Corrina,
I was wondering if you could help find out about something for me. I would tell you more but I do not think it would be appropriate to place this where other people could read it. It is nothing bad it is just personal.
Thanks

I think that trust in all clergy has been compromised and the system of approving an individual for service to the public as a cleric must be overhauled.

Unfortunately, sick individuals have found a place of secrecy to commit their deviant acts and largely remain protected, although, thankfully, this is beginning to change.

While I understand the religious position of taking a sinner into the fold, I can not condone covering up what wrongs that person has done unto others, especially children.

I think their activities should be made public, they should be turned over to law enforcement and go through the same procedures as every other active pedophile, and upon their release should certainly be separated from public service, but not ostracized from their religious community.

I grew up in the Catholic church and was an Alterboy from the time I was in the 3rd grade till I graduated high school. Never once in all the different churches I attended did I see, hearof, or knew of such activity going on. I am not saying it didnt happen but it makes one wonder why it takes 20-30 years for someone else to bring it up and not mention it at the time it happens. Yes there might be a few bad apples and as the saying goes, a few bad apples ruins the whle bunch.
Not only did I grow up in the Catholic church but I also attended several other types of churches and some of the things that happen there are also questionable. Things like the preacher cheeting on his wife, preaching the evils of drinking while sporting a hangover from the night before, and the biggest one were the stories about the preachers daughters. At one church the preachers daughter ended up pregnant and she had no idea who the father was because she was sleeping with several deacons and other adult members of the church and had slept with the numerous boys from school. ( Ga. attitude) When she gave birth the Baptist church her father was pastor of covered up the story because the baby was black and she was white (this was in the early 70s). The innocent baby was sent away and given up for adoption.

Corrina, did the Pope ever acknowledge making mistakes himself? If a Pope does, what happens to the concept of the Pope being infallible?

Pope Benedict, condemned those priest in the Church who violated children.
He even condemned the bishops that covered the crimes and protected the abusers by moving them.
This may have been a first and could go a long way to prevent the crime, as well as, any cover up from happening in the future.
I was more than a little surprised, but pleased.
He is finally showing leadership and giving direction.
The meeting with some of the victims and their families showed powerful and unexpected leadership for any pope.
The Church has a tradition of ignoring what was wrong within.
Pope Benedict let it be known that crimes of this nature will not be covered up with his stand up leadership.
I applaud this more than the edicts of his predecessors.

We'll have to see if any meaningful action is taken in relation to his condemnations.

If they would allow their priests to marry it might help to keep these things from happening. With the priests not allowed to marry, it's no wonder why this is happening.
