SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) -- Former first lady Nancy Reagan planned to endorse John McCain for president on Tuesday, as the Arizona senator continued to collect the backing of leading Republicans who might help him win over critical conservative voters. Now certain to win the GOP nomination, McCain is on the west coast this week to raise money. He was to stop by the Southern California home of former President Ronald Reagan's widow to accept her endorsement. In a statement before the event, Reagan said she typically waits until after the GOP convention to announce her support but she decided to do so now because it is clear the Republican Party has chosen its nominee. "John McCain has been a good friend for over thirty years," Reagan said. "My husband and I first came to know him as a returning Vietnam War POW, and were impressed by the courage he had shown through his terrible ordeal. I believe John's record and experience have prepared him well to be our next president." Reagan's eventual support was expected, and she will become the latest Republican heavyweight to fall in line behind McCain. She and McCain have long been close, and it was only a matter of time before she spoke up for her friend. Her endorsement could help McCain shore up the backing of conservatives in Republican base that long has viewed him skeptically for his record of breaking with the party on some issues they hold dear. At the same time, Reagan's nod also could help further align him with the former president who attracted Democratic as well as Republican voters.

Do you agree?  Think Mrs. Reagan's endorsement could help shore up the backing of conservatives in the Republican base?

Thanks for blogging,
Corrina

I have always thought of the Reagans as respectable people Ronald Reagan was the greatest president in our time we have ever had(unless you are a Democrat in which case it would be Clinton). I think it will help the conservatives warm up to McCain I was skeptical of McCain's ability to win against Clinton or Obama but now that she has backed him I think he could just win the election. I now have to ponder who he will be taking as a running mate I hope it is Mitt.

I too have always respected the Reagans. I would love to see many, many more big name backers for McCain. I only wish people would vote for the best candidate who will do the most for the country and that is NOT one of the democraps. Also, let me say this. I wish Mr. McCain all the best in trying to straighten out the mess that Clinton got this country into while he was in office. A lot of ignorant people are still trying to blame it all on Mr. Bush, but this country was screwed before he came on board. Thank you Mrs. Reagan.

Nancy Reagan's endorcement in this conservatives opinion is her own and I will always cherish one of the best 1st ladies this nation has ever had the privlige to know. McCain however will not persuade stanch conservatives by endorcements. He is going to have to address conservative's specific issues with them. Thus far he has only talked about it. The last thing conservatives are going to fall for is being passified. McCain will only enrage conservatives if he attempts to "attone" or "placte" to them. If he wants a conservative following he knows what he needs to do. I will not support an candidate that is far from my views, and this election cycle has yet to offer one from any party. Lucky for McCain the Democrats are inflicting fatal campaign damage between themselves, else he just might not be the next President.

If I can handle 8 years of Clinton while serving in the military, I can handle 4 years of McCain... but he does not have my vote at this point.

Now there's an endorsement! If he is good enough for her then I guess he will be the next president! I totally respect Nancy Reagan and I will comply with her choice...she has never misguided anyone or anything! In fact she is one of the most honest and loving person that shared her insight and full support while in the White House! I still have some question where McCain is concerned but a really honorable lady has now made her choice and I will listen!

Mater01 with all respect to you and Nancy... she has endorced the Republican candidate each and every time. She came out early this time because Republicans have made their decission early. This really isn't a special event, and with respect, does not change my conservative concerns toward McCain.

TRUST ME...I have been battling the thought of voting or not period because I don't think any of them are worthy enough to sit in the president's chair! And Yes...your right! McCain is way by far a leader like President Reagan! He reminds me of Carter (peanut head) and Nixon (I am not a crock) combine!

Seriously, does anyone really see the Republican Conservatives voting for anyone other than McCain? Besides, who else was she going to endorse? I have a lot of respect for the former First Lady but I seriously don't see her endorsement as confirming a "win" for the republicans. Anyone who looks at this as anything less than a knock down, drag out fight, is naive.

Democrats have the upper hand right now and they would have to do something catastrophic to lose it. People want change and McCain isn't shaping up to be much of a change with positions he is standing on right now.

Unless McCain can show he is going to implement drastic changes to right the current course of the economy and admit to some concessions in Iraq, then even Ronald Reagan's (god rest his soul) endorsement couldn't bring the party a win next November.

Sageman sez "Seriously, does anyone really see the Republican Conservatives voting for anyone other than McCain?"

Very possibly. There are some disaffected conservatives who will either sit this one our, or perhaps cast a ringer vote for Nader.
I don't imagine anyone doubting Nancy Reagan's sincerity, but after all, she is a loyal Republican and so, has no other choice now.
I am an independent (very very conservative)and just can't bring myself to support McCain. To a hard line conservative, there is so little difference between McCain, Obama and Clinton, it doesn't really matter which of the three wins. As a Navy vet, I have a tremendous respect for McCain, but he has spent too much time compromising with Kennedy, et al, and is now tainted with the stain of liberalism.

McCain needs money to match the Liberals. He will get all Republicans to vote for him. No real Republican would even think about Hussein or a former First Lady. Johnny has nothing to do but collect money till the Communist Covention is over and the two Liberals finally decide which one is weak enough to try to lead. "Seriously, does anyone really see the Republican Conservatives voting for anyone other than McCain? "

Sageman - That is the hook that McCain is hanging his entire campaign on and for me, it equates to "here is your $#!+ sandwhich.. now be a good little Republican and eat it."

Nope... ain't gonna happen. Yesterdays speach alone was another nail in the conservative cofffin for him as he placated to the Europeans, and basically said the new organization outside the UN would be a good thing. These are ALL folks that want to see America hobbled financially anyways and they are going to use things like Global Warming to do it.

Nope... McCain better hope he has all the independants he can muster up, because conservatives are going to send the Republican party a message too.. get off your butts and bring us a candidate from the right!

Already hearing big wigs on the Republican side starting to sweat a little, and they are out trying to play the party card. McCain better understand that if he fails the conservatives, they will simply feed him to the liberals for lunch.

The Iraq War is a strong spot, but again conservatives know when libs are playing the hype. They will no sooner end the war and wear an American defeat around their neck than they did Kennedy or Johnson in Vietnam, they will wait for it to be a Republican. Its a bluff and they know we have already called them on it.

It is certainly shocking that Mrs. Reagan backs McCain. I had expected her to support Obama or Hillary. Now if we can get Abunai to endorse McCain it should be a done deal.

Poor Nancy Reagan, that had to be one hell of a bitter pill to swallow.

Abunai, I heard excerpts of McCains speech as well. The entire time I'm yelling "No, no, no, NO!! What are you DOING!?"

I'm really dreading the upcoming election. That "$#!+ sandwhich" comment? I couldn't have put it better myself.
