This just in from the AP:

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Barry Bonds was indicted Thursday on perjury and obstruction of justice charges, the culmination of a four-year federal investigation into whether he lied under oath to a grand jury looking into steroid use by elite athletes.

Are you surprised or do you think it's about time?

Looking forward to your blogs...

So how is this different than McGuire lying during that hearing they all had due to the Canseco Book and allegations? Gimme a break.. they are coming down on Barry because of the Home Run Record and this is what is making this one so much more a big deal- I hope he gets off.. like everyone else has..
YET parents who purposely create a fake boyfriend and harrass a young girl Knowingly and she hangs herself because of it may not be charged with a felony?
Seems like out justice system is a bit unbalanced with priorities here..

What nonsense. Barry's only problem is that he is not a very likeable guy and now he is the target of this "investigation" and people would just love to get him. Barry Bonds did what many others did in one shape or form over the years. Some sports figures have used drugs, drank heavily...and some even smoked cigarettes in the dugout!! Oh horror upon horrors.
Let's stop judging our sports figures as if we Peter at the Pearly Gates. They are men and women who put their pants on one leg at a time and yes, they do make mistakes sometimes. Let's not make it a crime to be a person.
Like him or not, Barry Bonds deserves to be in the Hall of Fame....without an asterick. Love him or hate him....he is a heck of ball player.

I am not surprised about this at all. Both Speedy and myself had written posts about his use of steroids and his character. You can click on our names to find the posts.

In the news this morning the lawyer representing Bonds feels that his client is being “over prosecuted” because of his popularity. Wow playing the race card already. The biggest difference between Bond’s and McGuire is that McGuire pleaded the fifth that means he didn’t say anything to prove guilt or innocence. It is when the general public hears someone pleaded the fifth the defendant is considered to be hiding something. In actuality this forces the prosecution to have to come up with the evidence to prove guilt. Right now the charges against Barry Bonds is not about whether he used steroids or not but did he commit perjury to a grand jury. Bonds denies that he “knowingly” took steroids (haven’t we heard that before?). I doubt a prosecutor would go “after” him if there weren’t significance evidence stating otherwise. I am sure we have not heard the end of this and I think other players will be brought into this “knowingly” use steroid case. Didn’t something similar like this happen with a group of ballplayers and bookies in Chicago.

Bonds is already in the Hall of Fame in the record books. But I hope that Bonds does not get into the Hall itself. If he does I hope I am dead and gone.

"Playing the race card"?? Come on Snoopy. Nobody said anything about race here. Fact is, I don't think Barry is all that popular and people are loving this. Mark McGwire was very popular here...and because of his remarks there are lots of folks who want to be sure he doesn't get in the hall. Maybe somebody needs to do background checks on the baseball writers who vote people into the hall.

“Bonds and his lawyers long have accused the government of targeting a high-profile, unpopular player merely for political gain while pondering if the investigation was racially motivated.”

Excerpt from Federal Grand Jury Indicts Barry Bonds by Paul Elias. You can find the article here in the Fox2 website at:

If you take a look at the players who have made it into the Hall look at their actions both on and off the field. How many HOF members have disgraced the game? How many have contributed to the community? Continued to be ambassaders of the game even though they are no longer playng. Being in the HOF is much more than numbers on the field. The HOF is also about the players off the field.

I am still amazed at those that just don't seem to "get it", especially those idiot sportswriters that refused McGwire into the HOF. Considering allegations against McGwire one only needs to remember the only one that has officially accused him is an admitted player and some lacky sportswriters. McGwire went before the Senate of his own accord and followed his attorney's advice. McGwire also did not abuse the St. Louis Cardinals by "demanding" an outrageous salary, choosing to end his career with the organization (and fanbase) that truly appreciated what he did for baseball. Additionally, McGwire's foundation helps boys who have survived sexual assault.

Now for Barry. Nawwwwww . . . he's not worth my time. Can anyone say *

Maybe they should re-name it the Hall of Saints. Now who shall sit in judgement of our major leaguers?
I agree that many players have been great humanitarians etc and generally nice people..but I think they should be elected to the HOF based on what they did on the field.
