John McCain is suspending his campaign effective Thursday morning - and wants a delay to the first Presidential debate scheduled for Friday. McCain says he (and Barack Obama) need to return to Washington and help solve the current financial crisis. McCain is calling on Obama to do the same.

One note...the first debate is to involve strictly foreign policy - not necessarily the topic of the moment.

Your thoughts on what McCain is doing...

I would be surprised if McCain gains by this but he CLEARLY should..

Already the MSM is treating this as a Political Stunt on the part of McCain as evidenced by the manner in which the questions were posed to Obama at HIS News Conference..

One thing should be pointed out here though..The Senate can DO without a JUNIOR Senator with 172 days in office who’s voted “Present” on MOST of the issues that came before him..In THIS case,,He’s Voting NOT Present..Just as well..He has NO influence in Washington anyway.

REID,, the DEMOCRAT Leader in the Senate,, Said JUST YESTERDAY that McCain’s Vote was VITAL..He DIDN’T say this of Obama...He ONLY reversed that AFTER McCain made his announcement..

So Obama can AFFORD to play his Political Games while a REAL leader gets his hands dirty..
As for Obama’s Statement about Presidents needing to do MORE then one thing at a time..He’s RIGHT..

Problem IS….OBAMA’S NOT THE PRESIDENT..He’s a SENATOR…He HAS a job to do and as USUAL….He ENDS up doing NOTHING to solve the Problem..

Political Posturing and Talking Points and debates will NOT solve this problem..

McCain is shooting himself in the foot. He is just not doing the right thing. Anyone can see this! He is stopping his campain for something that he cannot help. Its no wonder that Obama leads every poll in the United States right now. If Obama stays with his words, which he is better at doing then McCain, it will show that he is the right canadate for this country. I was listening to Real Radio less then 10 minutes ago and they said that they cannot air a McCain ad until next Monday at the earliest. Maybe McCain just wants to take a nap on Friday night. He doesn't answer media questions anymore and he does a good job of keeping Sarah Palin out of the light. Even Laura Bush has said that she doesn't think Palin is ready.

The time for McCain to worry about the economic crisis was during all those years when he voted for unbridled deregulation and tax breaks for corporations sending capital and jobs overseas, while voting against sanctioning Red China for unfair, unbalanced trade practices. His sudden concern for the economy is disingenuous, for his policies provided the crucible for the meltdown. This economic crisis can't be solved by a quick-fix bailout whose white-collar corporate welfare is going to saddle generations of average Joe taxpayers for generations to come. Congress needs to take its time rather than rush into anything rashly -- so it's odd that McCain can't spare a few hours to make the debate.

Let's face it, McCain has been trying to get out of this debate for some time. It might not be as easy as the Rick Warren fiasco was.

And by wanting to schedule the presidential debate in place of the VP debate makes it obvious that Palin isn't ready....probably as a result of spending so much time advising foreign leaders. She won't even take questions from reporters, so it is obvious that she isn't up to speed yet.

Sound to me like the liberals just might be a little upset over the idea of McCain who on his last legislation in 2006 for reform of regulations after several other attempts was voted down along party lines!! The last thing the Democrats need right now is for America to find out just how involved Democrats are in this mess, and how often (everytime) they shot down regulation!

This entire issue could very well become the entire Democrat party's "Blue Dress!"

Well, it gives me even more respect for McCain. Something more important has come up, and he is needed in Washington.
Apparently Obama won't even bother to show up. Isn't he a senator too? But why should he bother anyway? All he ever does is vote "present". He would be of little use even if he did show.

A lot of the libs are crying he is running scared. To them I say he only wanted to POSTPONE the debate, not CANCEL it! And for good reason!

The Republicans had the class to skip the first day of the RNC because of the hurricane. Do you honestly think the Dems would have done the same? HELL no!
The fact that Obama refuses to POSTPONE the debate for the greater good of our country really shows his true colors once again.

ronald5740 - that's good one! I concur. What's so predictable, is Obama waffle-boy spouting off, "We need a debate more now than ever!" Where were you months ago, when McCAin was begging you to debate? Hiding behind Hillary's skirt? Getting tutoring from Biden on how to not say...uh..er...
What a shallow, shallow man

whos that plum? the Democrats? Interesting fact that there are STILL some 125 people overseas that fled the US to avoid having to testify against Democrats and Clinton in the 90s! Only one actually had a wife that could buy a pardon.....

Seriously plum19.. the Democrat's long record on obstruction of regulation and dealing with Freddie and Fannie is like the boy sticking his fingers in the leaking damm... The left is running out of fingers real fast...

Mccain is seeing his campaign starting to tank..so this is his hail mary pass..trying to save his campaign..and the reason why he is delaying this debate is because if the economy comes up he his dead meat!!! so he would rather wait until this thing is over..and then he wouldnt have to explain himself so much..the latest abcnews polls show obama up by 1o points even the latest fox news polls show huge gains by obama..so mccain is so scared now that he is doing anything and everything he can to save his butt!!!good riddance to bad rubbish

There's a thread like this under the news category too,
so here's my thoughts (which I posted there).

I don't think McCain is afraid of the debate.
I believe he is USING the postponement of the debate
to make him look good, as if he and/or Obama has
the power to do something the other senators can not.

McCain hopes that by asking Obama to join him in postponing
the debate, voters will see him as a leader who
puts country first and is making a personal (token) sacrifice.
Obama is intelligent enough to see it for what it is; a ploy.

I believe voters will see through McCain's mask.

Well..YOU guys read what JOE had to say..NOW read how fully DOCUMENTED HISTORY tells the SAME story..

GUESS who was in charge of Freddie/Fannie when Clinton signed that Bill REMOVING restrictions on banks??

Even though she had no previous training nor experience in finance, Clinton's Former Deputy Atorney General Jamie " I have NO idea HOW that Intelligence wall fell down" Gorelick was appointed Vice Chairman of Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae) from 1997 to 2003. She served alongside former Clinton Administration official Franklin Raines, and earned over $26,000,000 during her six years there. During that SAME periodof time, Fannie Mae developed a $10 billion accounting error and subsequent scandal.

BTW..NO Investegation at the time and NO Prosecutions either..JUST a scandal..

President Bush tried to put an end to this in 2003 and John McCain tried to stop this in 2005 And AGAIN in 2006.

Congressional Banking leaders Chris Dodd and Barney Frank said that everything was just fine and no reforms were needed.

Chris Dodd.. Now WHERE have I heard THAT name before??

OOOOH Yeeeaahh..NOW I remember… He’s the CHAIRMAN of the Senate BANKING Committee

( STILL )

who proposed a housing bailout on the Senate floor in June 2008 that would assist troubled subprime mortgage lenders such as Countrywide Bank in the wake of the housing bubble’s collapse, ( ALMOST as funny as William Jefferson being put ON the Ethics Committee AFTER he was Indicted on 12 counts ) Dodd had refinanced the mortgages on his homes in Washington D.C. and Connecticut thr

through Countrywide and had received extrmely favorable terms... Dodd received mortgages from Countrywide at below-market rates on his Washington, D.C. and Connecticut homes.

He’s ALSO the ONLY one in the ENTIRE Congress that received MORE money from Freddie/Fannie then Obama..

And Barney Frank,, CHAIRMAN of the Ethics Committee,, said that THIS was NOTHING worth investegating..

So,,,, YOU Lefties want to point fingers and Blame Republicans for this,, Eh???

ALL I Gotta say is..

BRING IT ON……….

Actually, when the final score was tallied,
McCain had about 10 times more donations than Obama.

The KEY point is that these debates are strictly topical and, as Cale has pointed out, the topic for this one is Foreign Policy; McCain’s strongest suit. So it makes no sense to claim that McCain is proposing a delay for any reason other than what he has said: to focus on addressing the economic crisis at the moment. I think it’s the sensible thing to do. Many people will not be able to focus on politics and foreign affairs until this crisis is properly addressed.

Because Obama is showing a 6 point lead in the latest polls,
So McCain is using this mess to try to look important.
It's politics as usual.

If McCain DIDN’T drop all things non-Economy Crisis (Letterman, Debate, etc.) his child-like opponents, who make it clear that they have no reasonable or legitimate criticisms of him, would be ALL OVER that. Claiming he doesn’t care about it, isn’t taking this once-in-a-century crisis seriously, etc., etc., etc. It’s so petty, immature, and monotonous. He did what any responsible seasoned American in his position should do. All this ridiculous criticism because he IS being responsible just makes it appear that his opponents wish Obama had thought to be more responsible, but since he didn’t, they defend his lack of experienced judgment by stepping on McCain. Honestly, regardless from which side it originates, that kind of immaturity from adult voters and politicians disgusts me.

Obama SAYS he wants to join McCain in his suggestion for a non-partisan approach, yet this is all you hear from his camp/supporters. It’ll be interesting to see just how long his side, the yentas on The View, and Tina Fey whine about THIS now. It got them, an otherwise irrelevant and intolerable group of has-beens or never-weres, in the news when nothing else does. So I guess you can’t blame them.
