Do we want Puerto Rico to be the 51st state of our nation? And if we do, should they loose the Spanish language, their Culture and speak English?

The official language of the United States of America has been and will always be English. Two Hundred and Thirty One years ago our four fathers were deciding between English and German as our national language…they decided on English…Welcome to America…Speak English…

Culture…When Hawaii became a state, did they loose their culture? I’m not sure how to answer that one…Hawaii still has their Polynesian ways no? Isn’t that why people go to Hawaii, to savor the Polynesian customs? I think Puerto Rico could still do the same, only in English.

If they don’t want to become a state, I say cut them loose and cut all aid. Puerto Ricans do not pay taxes and do not vote for U.S. president, they do into pay Social Security but they drain the United States of welfare and unemployment benefits…

What do you think?

Puerto Rico will be included in the North American Union. It's not like the people have a choice or anything. If they resist they will die like the rest.

What is stupid is the idea that they and not we are going to make the choice....that is liberalism for you, let the child set the rules and leave the parent (the USA) with the bill . This unruly child should have been made “independent” (from OUR money) years ago .

Thanks Be_Nice! Sorry about all the posts, I figured I would use your post to inform all of the NAU propositions that are being put in place as we speak. I believe it's the Liberals and the Neo Conservatives doing all of this to America. I ignore both parties because all they do is point at each other and blame one another but in reality they should both be pointing at themselves. I try to stay independent and just research as much as I can and try to make other aware of what's going on.

I'm just the wacko nut case of the blogs right now, but I'm sure when most people start figuring out what's really going on they'll come around.

This is my reason for voting for Ron Paul. I may not a agree with him on everything, but, without our sovereignty, none of it really matters anyway.

I was brestfed when I was an infant. I grew up and now make my own money to feed myself and my family. It is time for PR to do the same. You can't have your cake and eat it too!

First off, I would like to say that I think everybody that is leaving negative comments about the situation are very ignorant. I dont think they should have to lose their language, culture, or customs, as long as they can abide by the rules of America. So for all of you who are making wisecracks about PR, you really need to get a LIFE. And for the record, no im not from PR, but Im 100% African AMERICAN!!

Mo-Monie...Do you speak your native language..?
Does the government make it easy for you to not speak English..? We’re not talking about Ebonics…I mean do you speak Swahili or what ever..?
Don’t sell yourself short…This IS America and you and I speak ENGLISH…So should everyone else…I am 100% AMERICAN…Not European American, but AMERICAN…GOD bless AMERICA…

Do they have US Citizenship? YES.
Then why should they not be made to meet the same requirements as immigrants who wait years to get residency and to become natuarlized?
That includes speaking English sufficiently to integrate into society, voting to elect leaders, and paying taxes.

Being American does not mean you cannot be proud of your heritage. But, American IS a country with an official language and those who claim citizenship should be eager to stand up and say I AM AN AMERICAN, I LOVE MY COUNTRY AND WANT TO BE A PART OF ITS SOCIETY.
What is so wrong about being American?
It doesnt make you any less Hispanic, or Russian, or Japanese. It makes you BLESSED to call American soil HOME SWEET HOME.

Puerto Rico is a beautiful place with great people who bring with them a rich and lengthy history. They should absolutely be proud of that, but should also be mindful that they possess US passports and are Americans.

People from Puerto Rico do consider themselves American and Puerto Rican. I don't know from where you guys say they don't. They have fought in all the wars since they became a territory of the U.S. They want to stay a commonwealth. They are some that want statehood, but that is not soon to be. And for the ones that don't know about P.R. Their spanish is being set on a class of it's own because all the English words that have been adopted into it. I think they would welcome speaking Spanish and English!

Good comments everyone. Here is my view.

First, I was born and raised in Puerto Rico. It may be hard for some of you to comprehend, but I am not a Puerto Rican, I am an American.

I wanted to be an American since I knew what the difference was. I embrace the culture, the language and its people. I listen to Van Halen and watched the 49ers not Salsa music. I spoke English with the few friends that share my believes. I have brothers that served in Vietnam and uncles that served in Korea. My grandfather served in WWII.

I moved here 15+ ago, finally home. There are a few of us that think that way. We see a lot of people of 'Puertoricans' speaking in Spanish (just like the Vietnamese community does here in Orlando). That's fine.

If you want to preserve your heritage or your whatever, then great. Good for you. BUT, do not think for a minute that you can become an American speaking Urdu or Cantonese. Speak English!

Every day, we have people migrating (legally) to the US. They want to be part of us. They work hard to learn English. Those people are always welcome. Work hard. Pay Taxes, live the American dream and love your country.

Love the USA. That is what I see as the problem. Most people in PR think of PR as their 'country' their 'homeland', not the US. That is the main difference. How can you become part of something that it is not in your heart.

We thought we could convert their hearts and minds (From 1989-1940 we invested millions of dollars in PR's public schools to teach English... that didn't work out).

I'm not trying to be mean. You can't be a Fl

I'm not trying to be mean. You can't be a Floridian and an American, you can be a Floridian without being American (New York city is probably the center of such thing, where people view themselves as New Yorkers but they came from all over the world and do not view themselves as Americans ).

About the comment ' they drain the United States of welfare and unemployment benefits'. The same can be said about big urban areas with a lot of immigrants.

PR's economy is a dependent economy. Cut US aid and they will starve. It will become like the Dominican Republic. We will not 'cut them loose'.

The politicians do not have the guts to do it. Every President is too busy to worry about 4 million American citizen. They don't have a choice. We still have some military facilities there.

Why not do this. The US Virgin Islands are aprox 30 miles east of PR. They are a US territory. Why not allow both of them for a Statehood. Something like the The United Virgin Islands of Puerto Rico' with San Juan as the capital, English as the official language. 10 years to transition...

What is funny is that so call 'Latinos' or 'Hispanics' will be the largest ethnic group by 2050. As weird as it may seem, people from PR do not view themselves are 'Latinos' or 'Hispanics', so it will be interesting.

P.S. Theory, if PR was located where Cuba is or if there was Oil, it would've become a State of the Union 100 years ago... just saying

Just to let you know the usa has no official language, english is just de facto because it's the language the forefathers used in the beginning, since this the case the United State could become a multi-lingual nation with all it's diverse cultures, you don't know, english might become the minor language in the future when another surpasses it.

I think you're an idiot, but this is the United Sates of America so you can have your idiot opinion. I think we should review Native American languages to each specific region therefore these stupid European culture wars can end. Have a nice day! :)
