All over the country, people are riding public transportation for free.  It is a way to save money, gas, and help the environment.  Have you used this service?  And how was it?

Orlando's mass transit system needs some MAJOR improvements in order to increase it's ridership. (is that a word?) Anyway, after watching the "Dump the Pump" story multiple times this morning I went to the LYNX web site and used the "trip planner" to map my route and determine my departure time in order to arrive at my work place by 10:00 AM. I would have to leave my home at 7:33 AM, transfer 2 times, and walk .81 miles for a total travel time of 2 hours 22 minutes to arrive at my job by 10:00 AM. After working 8 hours I would repeat this process in reverse and arrive home at 8:30 PM. 4 hours 44 minutes total travel time for a job that is 18 miles away is neither cost effecient or convenient. I could work those extra hours and with the overtime pay, fill my tank twice. Wake up LYNX! Make mass transit more appealing to the masses.

I have actually planned to go to the mall with my kids tonight, and we will be using the LYNX bus, just for kicks.

As Phlybynight points out, if I had to ride the bus to work, I would have to get up at 4 a.m. each day!

To that I say: "No way, Jose!!" ~ I like my sleep. LOL

Public transportation is a big mess, one that no one throughout Central Florida can depend on. That's one of the reasons why I pointed out several different things relating to this on my topic as follows:

If Orlando and the surrounding areas can adopt a system similar to Miami - Ft. Lauderdale areas, or even The Disney Attractions, I believe more people would use alternative methods. Alternative transportation needs to be revisited and something done before any of the City Officials reach into our pockets for even more tax payer money. And just out of curiosity, unless I have missed something, which public transportation is free other than the one day coupon to try it out today with the Lynx Transportation?

Nothing is free, theres always a catch, and im sure it digs deep into the taxpayers pocket

Twizlled you are right, after I posted that statement, it got me thinking. Even if we had alternative ways to travel, we would have to spend more tax payer money to see it happen, then I wonder how much it would cost us after we paid for it in order to continue using it even though we already paid for it.

Public transportation here in all of central Fl. is a big joke. People need to get their heads out of their you know whats and realize that some type of rail system is needed and that it is needed for the people of central Fl. not the mouse. I have used the bus system on occasion, on weekends here in Sanford it is almost non excistant(1 bus every hour if you are lucky). The worst part is more people here are from up north and they know how a good public transportation system is/works.

From what I've heard, the bus systems were not only increasing their rates, but cutting back on their routes as well. I don't see how relying on public transit is going to improve things in a big way. At least, not the bus system, which is pretty poor to begin with. I can't speak for the rail system. I haven't traveled by rail in years.

Now, in my former residence of Monterey, CA, the public transit was VERY good. Routes were plentiful, and the buses, on most cases, ran every 15 minutes. Of course, they were also more expensive, but you get what you pay for. There were also bike paths everywhere, so cyclers didn't have to travel on the street and risk getting hit by cars.

For a simple 35 minute drive it would take me a little over 4 hours to get there by bus. So the question should be, are you stupid enough to ride the bus and spend hours and hours of your life wasted away like that?

Adeltonian..that was funny. Eric there you have it..you see up north MY GOSH..a bus every 10 minutes or less..and all routes..I mean major streets and side streets. I can't see the Lynx Buses being useful in they only run up and down Colonial and Roselyn..is the only two main drags I've have seen them and like Adeltonian indicated YOU WOULD SIT FOR HOURS OR RIDE FOR HOURS to get to a destination..ITS TIME ORLANDO STOPS BUILDING SO MANY FREAKIN HOUSES AND START WORKING ON TRASPORTATION to get the people around from EVERY SIDE OF TOWN...then we can go back to building the freaking house market. DEFINATELY WE MUST STAND TOGETHER TO BLOCK OR AVOID HOUSING PROJECTS..A/K/A GHETTOS......they are useless and only destroy the communities. The train would be alright from one Town to Another..but then WE ARE BACK TO SQUARE ONE..when you get off the train THEN WHAT.......you stand around with your thumbs UP............DOWNER....

Candy
Here in Deltona, if you live anywhere off the main roads, you have to walk blocks to miles to even find a bus, then you have to wait for a transfer bus which only comes once an hour for a limited time period.
So by the time you get the bus to take you to Longwood, you will be late for work, and by the time you get off of work, the transfer bus no longer is running sticking you over 11 miles from home.

Yeah, I want to ride that bus too.

I have posted before about the deplorable condition of our mass transit system. the bus only serves part of the city late at nite. after 10:30pm there is no service at all. planes land 24/7 at OIA but between 10:30-5:30 there's no way out unless you rent a car, cab or have someone pick you up. I can't (not won't) use the bus service cause it doesn't run early enough for me to get to work on time. wake up! this is a tourist trap town that operates 24/7. there are those of us who work odd because of it. but can't get transport because it doesn't exist at the hours we need it. lynx states they don't get enough money from the state & county to expand the routes and times.believe me they would ride if it was available. but wasting money to routes in clermont(express route) I saw 9 people getting on thursday afternoon, you can't tell me thats cost effective. and why lake county or volusa county routes? last I heard they weren't part of the tri-county transit system A.K.A. lynx.

I had to ride the bus for over 3 years, until I bought a car. Buses were late and usually crowded. I took the #4 from the Florida mall down OBT and there were times when people were packed in like sardines. Same for the #8 on I-Drive. I would not take the bus again because they are dirty and usually late.

Hola everyone, I have been back in Florida for almost a year now, and it is great to be back and part of the FOX 35 News Team. I am amazed of how many people remember me from when I was a National/International Reporter for Telemundo Network... For nine years I was assigned to New York and Puerto Rico... But what is even more interesting is that I met a woman from South Africa and a gentlemen from Russia who knew who I was. They remembered me from the Network show I was on, then I remembered it was such a popular show (a spanish dateline) it was sold to other countries, 25 to be exact and translated to their corresponding languages.. Before FOX 35, I was the main News Anchor at Univision 23 / Dallas, Texas. It was a great experience being a part of a team that became the number one news station in that market... Well I hope to hear from you, share your thoughts and ideas... SALUDOS A TODOS =)... Alexis
